Any tips, hints for going transatlantic next month on Celebrity Ascent. I’m ex seaman so no issues but my wife is a little apprehensive.

As an ex seaman, with that experience, wouldn't you be in the best position to offer her reassurance?

Has she been on a cruise before?  Take some meds or patches just in case.  We have done a number of transatlantic and transpacific cruises and most have had very calm seas.  But as you know weather is unpredictable and if you encounter a bad storm she will feel the movement of the ship.

We are on the same transatlantic.  You might drop by the roll call.  There are quite a few knowledgeable folks there.

One,10 years ago in Bahamas and last year in Croatia/ Italy area on Beyond so weather was beautiful both times

I get terribly seasick, too. We've done four or five TransAtlantics. Both had some good rough patches. For the first couple of cruises I wore the scopolamine patch but now prefer to have acupuncture. It works very well, doesn't make you drowsy and you can still have alcohol. If seas are very rough (25+ foot) then I may take half of a meclizine (Bonine) before bed. It helps with sleep but also keeps seasickness at bay the next day. I have never had to lie down in the middle of the day because I felt unwell. 

 

There are acupuncture practitioners on the ship but I prefer to have a treatment the day before we travel to the port. It's considerably less expensive on shore.

We'll be taking our 10th (or 11th?) westbound TA in November, all on smaller ships than Ascent (some much smaller - about 30% of the GT of the Ascent), and of all of those, we've not yet once had the kind of weather that would cause the average person any trouble at all.  That's not to say it can't happen, but isn't any more likely to occur than in the Caribbean at the same time of the year.  We do tend to take the returns that occur later in the Fall, which probably helps a bit.

The only issue to worry about in my opinion/experience is if your wife is prone to getting seasick. Crossing the Atlantic Ocean can be pretty rocky, but fortunately I don’t have any issues with netting seasick. However, I have several friends who will not do another TA because of the rough seas.

I'm asking about the departure date of the cruise that caused " I have several friends who will not do another TA because of the rough seas.", not a future cruise.

Ginger biscuits work well for us. Nothing fancy Lidl's cheapest work great.

The crew tend to swear by green apples.

Best advise is if the Captain says it will be "rough" in x number of hours time and to take meds now then do it don't wait.

We have loved every TA  and TP we have done - embrace the different atmosphere of a repositioning cruise and enjoy.

What works better is to order a lot of Dark and Stormy 🥃😉😋😁

Some swear by the patch or oral medicine,

Is your cabin close to center of ship, from front to back and top to bottom? There you would have the least rocking.

Aye cabin Mid ships, deck 10, didn’t want any higher for that reason for the Mrs just incase, but hopefully weather be fine

The only time I felt bad was on our first TA , and it was between Lisbon and Madera

it wasn’t rough just big rounding waves, and just 3 days before we went skirted a Hurricane on the Med, on deck 8, forward people had water coming into the cabin, and I felt fine 🤔

Have been about 14 TAs since than with a lot rougher seas without a problem

Ok thanks for the info and advice, it’s just this will be our first TA so hopefully wife feels fine during the crossing.

if you use ginger ale make sure it is real ginger and not just flavoured sugar water.

Ginger chews are great

Ginger tablets work fine for me or ginger root capsules. No side effects either. I take them every day of the cruise as I don’t want to risk feeling unwell.
