COVID After Cruise

We have done 3 post COVID cruises and our daughter has done one.  ALL of us have tested positive for COVID after returning from these cruises.  No symptoms at all during the cruise but within 2-3 days after getting back had symptoms, took test and was positive.  Fortunately all cases were very mild with no complications.

I was just wondering, how often is this occurring generally.  Have we just been "unlucky" or is this happening often.

We got COVID after our 2 last cruises.  Fortunately we are fully vaccinated and the symptoms, like yours, were mild.  We wore masks, washed our hands whenever we returned to the cabin, didn't go to ANY shows and we still ended up with COVID. 😢

I tested positive the day after I got back from my cruise in late June, I was in bed for a week! Fully Vaxxed

I had cruised 8 other times post COVID and didn't get sick

We returned from a 10-day Canadian/N.E. cruise on the Emerald on Sept 7th (great cruise).  I tested positive 2 days after, but DH never did.  I am 99.9% sure I got it from a lady in the Quebec airport and not from the cruise.  This lady was pitiful (sniffling a lot, head in hands, acted like she was freezing - the usual sick symptoms).  We moved away but probably not soon enough.  I'm a magnet to sick people!  Of course, this is just conjecture on my part and I could have picked it up anywhere from anybody(ies), like at Kroger the morning after we got home!

We picked it up after a cruise about a year ago.  We were on a bus transfer where lots of people were hacking & coughing.  We did our best to try to keep away...but there's only so much you do while on a bus.  (We dug out masks for us...but still got it!)

Unfortunately any time you are in enclosed spaces with a lot of people it is likely you will catch something.

We have just booked our Autumn Covid and Flu booster and should have it 3 weeks before cruising.  Hoping if we do catch covid, the flu, or a cold it will be fairly mild.

Unfortunately we are on a high deck on the next cruise so will need to use the lifts more than we normally do when on deck 9 (our favourite deck for aft cabins).

I am glad that you had a fairly mild case with no complications

202 days cruising since the restart and came home with Covid one time.  We don’t attend shows in the theatre but attend most other public events.  We don’t share tables in the dining room but they are a lot closer together now than they were on our first cruise back.

Longest cruises were 30 and 31 days but it was after our 10 day land tour cruise to Alaska that I tested positive.  We only got off the ship once for about an hour and live just out of Vancouver so no flight home.

My husband was fine and my symptoms were easily managed with cold pills.

Unfortunately there is no way to know how prevalent it is after a cruise.  Even on the cruise too many people don't test and they mingle around the ship thinking they just have a cold.  They don't care if it is Covid because to their thinking it is "just a cold".

Interesting replies.  It does seem to be happening more often than not.  We have also kept up to date on all COVID and regular flu vaccinations, and that could be a contributing factor to the mild cases we had.

We have cruised quite often since cruising has resumed back in 2021.  I’ve had CoVid 4 times and must say, one time from family, once from the San Diego airport and twice from cruises.  Thankfully, all cases have been relatively mild.  The last time I got it, I wouldn’t have even known I was sick except I couldn’t taste anything, so tested.  Sure enough, it was positive, so I isolated.  My DH has never gotten it!  I think he has super immunity or something.
I’ve had much worse reactions to the vaccine, so don’t think any further vaccines for CoVid are in my future.

3 out of 4 of us returned from an Iceland cruise (Island Princess) a year ago with Covid. Fairly mild symptoms. Got vaccinated before our Emerald Cruise in June/July. None of us got it.

Just returned from Alaska on the Majestic. Two out of six of us tested positive upon return. I was one of them and had a very faint line on the test and virtually no symptoms.

It seems inevitable now when flying, cruising, and other close contact activities. Thankfully it has become pretty mild for now.

I did three post covid cruises. Fully vaccinated and always wore our N95 everywhere onboard. Disinfected the cabin before moving in. And then tried to open the balcony door as much as possible for air circulation. Never caught anything.  Greater danger is on airplane and bus tour.

I have had COVID 3 times now - each time following a cruise, most recently just a little over a week ago following our Alaska cruise on the Ruby. But I've also been on three other cruises where we didn't get it. So, it is hit or miss.

We get our boosters, are healthy, and take reasonable precautions without letting interfere with our enjoyment, so I just don't let it worry me. All three bouts have been mild, particularly the last one. I wouldn't even have tested this last time as I really had very minimal symptoms, but did so because my son-in-law and daughter who traveled with us both tested positive and I work with a colleague who lives with her very elderly mother and I didn't want to expose her.

It's just part of life now and a risk of cruising, or any type of activity where you are in crowded settings with large groups of people.

Started to feel bad the evening after disembarking, tested positive two days later and stayed positive for 15 days. On board, I had quickly abandoned my plans to wear a mask, and just past the halfway point started noticing other pax with increasing symptoms. This was in 2023, after 2+ years of avoiding any illness.

In 2024, I went on a cruise that was twice as long, plus a cross country flight. I wore my N95 mask ALL of the time, outside of eating or drinking. Came home and never got sick.

I learned my lesson, and will certainly mask and boost before my cruise next month. I don’t want a repeat episode, as my 2023 experience was not remotely “just a cold.”

Covid is occurring all the time. Fortunately, symptoms are generally mild.

Yes, it's quite common.  We cruised a lot after the cruising restart and it didn't hit us until our British Isles cruise on the Regal in June / July 2023.  I started getting symptoms on the plane on the way home so I definitely got it from someone on the cruise.  DH got sick the day after me.  Then we both got a nasty upper respiratory infection towards the end of our New Zealand cruise on the Royal last December.  Had two cruises after that with no illness.  And then I tested positive for Covid within a week after returning from our July cruise on the Discovery which may have happened as we were in crowded airports trying to return home amidst the Crowdstrike mess.  DH stayed healthy.  So yeah, I'd say that any time you're going to be spending a lot of time in enclosed spaces with a lot of strangers you're more likely than not to catch something.

Interesting.  Fully vaccinated as of 2022.  Two cruises and have traveled 6 months a year every year since 2020.  Including Europe twice and Australia.   Have yet to get covid.  Even got a test to show no antibodies. DW fully vaccinated and up to date got it at home in 2023.  Very sick one day only.  Took Paxlovid with a mild rebound case a week later.  Both are late 70s.

Masks no.  Do wash hands often and keep hands away from face.

You absolutely never know.

Really hard to eat or drink at a bar with a mask. We just make sure we are up to date on all vaccinations (just got flu and covid last week). We bring masks but mostly to use in the smoking area of the casino

We made new friends onboard who complaint that they had never seen my face...You just have to pretend the masking and social distancing mandates are still in place. Just took mask off to eat and back on right away. Washed hands as much as possible. On Sky Princess transatlantic cruise in March, they didn't have staff to guide people to wash hands before going into the buffet but started to do so towards the second half of the 18-day cruise. Just have to be vigilant…keep an eye on the sick looking and those who cough and sneeze a whole lot.

We both got covid on the 14 day Grand to Alaska in August. This was the first time we’ve gotten covid. Yeah, we made it thru the pandemic, only to get it on the cruise.

Starting week 2, there was A LOT of sneezing and coughing…most NOT covered. I went to the medical office for masks and asked that the captain remind people to cover their coughs, wear masks, stay in their rooms…or at the very least, tell people (hint, hint) they can pick up masks at guest services/wherever. Nope. They don’t want to be the bad guys. And besides, people know what they’re supposed to do.

There was open discussions about feeling better or more fatigued than yesterday, and at least 1 person coughing at nearly every table (yeah, I paid attention).

We’ve cancelled our December cruise.

If you want to avoid things like Flu , colds, Covid etc then you really need to about all crowds.  That would mean no concerts, athletic events , theatre, movies, dine in restaurants etc. Where ever there are crowds there is danger of contracting something.   Make sure you are vaccinated for everything you can be and stay home when sick. That has been  way to handle these things for a hundred years

So the main issue is all these people jamming in to the elevators....please stop doing that.. Wait for the next one or take the steps if you can. I would stay away from the Princess theatre and any other crowded space. We cruise a lot and have never had covid after a cruise. We are vaccinated up to date...do not wear a mask , but do NOT jam in to those elevators where they just laugh at you when you walk out.
