Tasos in The Liars Club show is a riot..

We were so sad that was not added to the entertainment on our Med cruise when Captain Tasos took over mid-cruise.  We enjoyed it so much on our last cruise with him.  Perhaps it depends on the CD. We found the recent one to be not our cup of tea.

But is it really her abilities as captain that we’re talking about?

From this thread it seems like we are talking about her PR abilities.  More popularity than capability.  More Facebook than salty captain who sailed container ships, aircraft carriers through some of the roughest seas for 40 to 50 years...  Some of whom we probably could not understand when they did the morning announcement 😆  The unsung heroes ...  In reality the best captains are paying more attention to ship operations than Facebook or being a Celebrity salesperson.  Celebrity sales vs.  running a tight ship...

But still we have our popularity contests ...

I guess I don’t cruise enough to notice the impact of the captain on the overall cruise experience. I think it’s time to book more cruises!

kidding aside, I don’t follow her and have never sailed on a ship she has captained but I say good for her in what she has accomplished in her career!  She obviously makes people happy. Were I in charge of Celebrity I’d be happy to have her on my team. Can’t be easy being a female captain in a predominantly male field….which makes me wonder, would a popular male captain with similar accomplishments be overrated or congratulated?

However, each time we have cruised with a ‘visible’ Captain, one that you see around and about the ship, interacting with guests and talking with staff the cruise experience is better.

Only cruised once with Captain Kate but I would agree with this. I follow her on Instagram and find her Captain's Log posts to be very informative. She seems like a genuinely warm person and much appreciative of the passengers - always happy to answer questions, have a chat, and thanks them for packages that they send her (and Bug).

She also seems like a great leader who champions her employees - especially the bridge officers.

She does do staged photo shoots on her Instagram that have nothing to do with her role as Captain (she did one of the iconic flowy blue dress on a Greek Island photoshoot as well as a mermaid under the sea one). She is an attractive person and these photos show another, more personal side of her. That may be off-putting to some who just see her as a ship captain in uniform.  She also did a collab with a jewelry company, but again - these things have nothing to do with her role on Celebrity Beyond.

Captain Kate has been a win/win for the Celebrity brand, IMO.

I haven't had the pleasure of sailing with Captain Kate. As far as Captains hosting shows, I was on the Celebrity Summit last year and the Captain not only hosted the Top Tier Event, but he was also involved in "The Liars Club". In either case, he showcased his sense of humor, I swear he could be a comedian!

I've also seen them host Q And A sessions with their fellow senior officers, so it's not completely unheard of.

I've sailed with Captain Kate and thought she was very personable, as well as very capable in running the ship. The crew seems to love her. What I hate is how Celebrity uses her; takes so much advantage of the first female Captain thing.  I find it rather insulting to be honest, like it's huge news that women are capable of such things.

Do other Celebrity Captains have their own talk shows in the theater??

I've seen all of them do an "Oceans Ahead" presentation - the "talk show" as you call it.

There's one who I've not encountered but apparently shills his own music in a show on board.

While she is the first Celebrity Cruise line Captain she is not the first female Captain or female cruise ship captain.. That is where Celebrity is being disingenuous. They are definitely using her. That said she is as you say very personable, seems very capable, and is making a great case for female Captains.

I used to think it could not make much difference but a number of years ago I took a Princess cruise with a well known personable Captain. Service, crew and food were great. Two months later same ship with a different Captain the crew were tense, uptight, the service was mediocre and so was the food. I attribute that to a different Captain although there had been an incident about 4 weeks before our sailing where a junior officer at the helm made a mistake and the ship suffered severe listing  and passenger injuries.

I agree with you 1000%, this is the biggest difference that I see between Captains.  I've been on  some ships that the crew seems very happy and the passengers can feel the difference.  From my perspective the Silhouette seems to have a very happy crew.  I didn't sense that same happiness with the crew when I sailed with Captain Kate.

And there you have it. Marketing 101, exploitation of a woman. How original 🙄.  Celebrity has her billed as a Charlies Angel of the sea. I have never heard a male Captain described as charming or charismatic.

I think the value that Captain Kate really has brought is that Celebrity captains are more visible than captains on other lines. That, and she's brought a level of transparency to cruise line ops that most other captains can't even come close to.

As a brand ambassador and as a role model, Captain Kate and the team on Beyond are invaluable.

Maybe, but when the industry as a whole is nearly 91% male captains, it makes sense why Captain Kate would self-promote and why it might be important that she do so. FWIW, one doesn't have to describe a male captain as anything because there are literally so many of them that it doesn't matter.

Unfortunately, in our society, it is huge news that Celebrity has an all-female bridge crew and female captain. There are many professions that women haven't been allowed to break into in that way, and Captain Kate serves as an important role model, especially in STEM education.

and perhaps it is a quid pro quo.  To say they are using her is an insult to her intelligence.

They are using her for marketing. I don't actually see anything wrong with that. And as I  think you are trying to saying it is good for her. She seems to be enjoying it. She has a page on social media which I don't look at that but I do watch her Captains Log videos posted to YouTube that she posts every day while on her contract. They are often very informative and are under two minutes.
