No way is nude for me. The fur lining on the bottom of my nightgown keeps my neck warm!!

I have heard the new ships have heat sensors so the bridge can tell if someone is in the cabin or on the balcony without being intrusive. This is incase of an emergency.

We noticed the camera aimed at the side of the ship on one of our last cruises - either Celebrity or NCL. After the Princess fire, I would expect nothing less.

Since I could see the camera, I'm sure I could be seen. Gave me a small sense of comfort.

I'm not sure if the sensors are actually capable of detecting whether a person is on the balcony. They're actually flame sensors. Princess at least has put them in on all their ships (not real surprising considering the Star), and I'm pretty sure other lines have done it too.

For the record - increased vigilance to balconies was a recommendation following the Star Princess fire. It was felt that a better watch on this area, which had no fire/heat sensors, would have discovered the fire much sooner.

So the immediate response was to but lookouts on each side, looking down the side of the ship. Certainly they have been replaced with cameras tied into the overall security system.

I'm aware of no ships with a camera per balcony tho....and the angle is such that a few balcony near the bridge might be viewable, but for the most part the camera just sees the outside of your railing.

Press Release:

Star Princess fire started on balcony

Princess Cruises has confirmed that a fire on the Star Princess in March started on one of the ship’s balconies and spread to other balconies, however no definitive cause has yet been determined.

The company said it had put precautions in place immediately after the fire to ensure that a similar incident does not reoccur.

It has implemented a 24-hour balcony fire watch, introduced specific training and fire response procedures for crew on handling balcony fires, enhanced communication to passengers regarding fire safety and changed certain crew housekeeping procedures on balconies.

The company said it was also “well advanced” with the development long-term and permanent measures to improve fire safety on balconies.

One funny story I read here at cruisecritic of people who were out on their balcony docked in port. A ship was docked next to them and they said from the corner balcony on the back of the neighbor ship they saw an older man come outside completely nude and put his swimsuit on the railing to dry.

They said obviously he thought he could not be seen as his balcony was the back corner of his ship and facing the ocean- but their balcony being up above his a little and across the way, they could.

How did we pull up an 8 year old thread and go completely off topic?

Ha - I just noticed that this thread is that old.

It was sleeping for 8 years and within an hour has 4 or 5 new posts.

There must be nothing good on television.

Not off-topic at all, really. Earlier discussion in this thread stats that individual balconies don't have cameras even though the ship's security cameras look down both sides of the ship. It's reasonable to wonder if the object in the recent photo is a camera (I agree that it appears to be an optical flame sensor).

How sensitive are those things? It gets pretty hot on our balconies when the Mrs. and I are out there.

They are set for 135*C (275*F), so you would have to be "smokin'".

But just remember, that the cameras under the bridge wings that look back along the side of the ship, can be moved and zoomed. They have pretty remarkable definition.

On the Norwegian Sky, there were two cameras that gave the bridge officers quite a lot of entertainment. One was the camera below the bridge that pointed down to the bow, and which included the forward suite balconies. These had hot tubs, and the view was sometimes "interesting". The other was on the fore mast and looked down over the kiddie pool and hot tub. This was apparently "the place" to get it on late at night.

Ooops, we had one of those forward suites once.:o

Oh well, probably taught those youngsters a thing or two.:D

Most of it is pretty simple - if you can see a camera from your balcony, then it can see you. It's highly likely that a camera somewhere can see you when you are standing at your balcony rail (or in the event that you 'go over' your balcony or if you throw something off your balcony). It is highly unlikely that a camera or other passengers can see you if you're sitting back from the rail out on open waters unless you are near or on one of the angled/hump/totally uncovered balconies. Those balconies can see others down the side and others can see onto some of them.

And, in the eight years since this thread was started, there's a new source of 'peeping' - at least near shore and in ports people are reporting drones hovering near ships and they are sending photos to some unknown place.

NO
it is not true. Another urban legend started by someone who has nothing better to do. There is no place to place a camera that would be directed at a balcony.

Believe only half of what you see and nothing of what you hear.

Do you think that they could find a place to hide a camera this small -

on the balcony if they really wanted to?

Or one of these - http://www.thehomesecuritysuperstore.com/outlet-and-wall-spy-cameras-lawmate-hidden-outlet-camera-pv-sk10-p=4614.

Or one of these - http://www.supercircuits.com/security-cameras/micro-video-cameras/ultra-small-color-cmos-micro-video-camera-pc210

Or one of these - http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&IsNodeId=1&N=100010040%20600212742

Cameras can be really really tiny these days. Would it take a lot of wiring - yes. Could they - easily. Would they want to - undoubtedly no.

Just returned from a cruise on Celebrity Century, we were aft & there definitely was a camera mounted at the rear of the ship. I feel confident the camera was focused on the side of the ship & not on our balconies. In other words a safety aid.

That is what it is installed for, but not necessarily what it may be used for. Depending on the angle from the camera mount to your balcony, there is more or less chance the camera can be aimed and focused on your entire balcony or just the outer edge. Generally, the bridge wing cameras are pointed back along the side of the ship during sea passages, but will be pointed down to the gangway in port.

Just remember that there are only three or four places on the ship that can view the surveillance cameras real time (bridge, engine control room, surveillance office, and casino office if applicable), and these stations require security log ins to activate. The bridge and engine officers are usually too busy to poke around with the cameras (though on overnight port stays they may get used for this ;)). The surveillance office scrolls through each camera in turn, getting a 10-20 second view on each, and those guys have seen just about everything and don't care to be voyeurs.
