Adult Atmosphere???

So I wanna take my daughter on a cruise for her 10th birthday, my mom who has been on one cruise warned me about the shows with the girls in thongs :eek:

 

One video I saw some pretty "adult" behavior if you know what I mean. I don't have a problem with it, but I really don't want to expose my daughter to it really.

I guess my question is, if I want a more family friendly atmosphere, should I pick a specific line over the other.

 

I don't want to just have her go off and do all the kids stuff, I want us to do things together, one guy though was dancing on the table after dinner :o

Is it always like this or just at certain times of the night. I don;t shelter her but I do want her to be kind of not aware of some things yet.

Many of the production shows are Vegas style, not nudity, but some costumes are pretty brief. Perhaps not on Disney, but on all the other lines...They can be very entertaining and clever, so maybe you could compromise and not sit very close...Perhaps the balcony. Other types of entertainment, such as the comedians, will tell you if they are 'adult', and it will usually be a late show, 10:30-11pm. EM

We have been on Disney, Carnival, NCL, RCL and Princess and have never seen anything in the production shows that would be inappropriate for a 10 year old. My kids are 8 and 13 and all of the shows have been acceptable. Now the comedians can be a little iffy, but generally you will be warned if it is an "Adult" show. If it isn't labeled as such on most lines like the ones above catering to families you will find most of the shows are appealing to a wide audience. Although the girls have sometimes worn what could be considered skimpy or form fitting outfits in a couple of productions I have never once seen a thong or anything extremely revealing.

Iv been on quite a few cruises and have yet to see a guy dancing on the tables lol. geez, see what I miss by not watching the wrap on u tube?

I cruised RC FOTS a few weeks ago with my 13 y/o daughter and we never once saw anything embarrassing or adult in any of the shows or public areas. As someone else said they are pretty good about letting you know if something is just for adults, like Quest for instance. My daughter spent a little time in the teen areas but the kids all spoke spanish or portuguese (we went during Carnavale, oops) so we mostly spent time together and had a ball. The only time we saw flesh was the teeny bikinis at the pool, male and female, again that's b'c we went during Carnavale. Blech! Saw more jiggly butts and bellies and thighs barely covered by far too little fabric than I ever want to see again. Is it a cultural thing? DD and I had a few good giggles over it. One time she turned to me and said "Do you think she even owns a full length mirror?!?!? LOL!!

Keep in mind on the cruises there is much more than just the shows. Check out Liberty of the Seas Royal Caribbean.... goonie golfing, rock climbing, surfing, ping pong, walking, gym, poolside games and contests....... the shows are just the extra feature. There is TONS to do on a ship with your daughter than JUST going to shows. One of my favorite things to do is go through the gallery and look at other peoples pictures.... some are really cool looking and others, you know they were creative and the pics are hilarious!

A very few of the things we did together:

~tons of mini golf

~I watched /took video/cheered her on on FlowRider

~celebratory cocktails and mocktails on the pool deck at sailaway

~bingo

~kids aren't supposed to be in the casino other than to walk thru on their way somewhere else...DD looks a bit older so she was able to sit with me as I put a couple bucks in the slots, we weren't there more than 10 mins, I won $7 woohooo! LOL!

~trivia (we won 2nd place on 70's music trivia thanks to my daughter!)

~endless trips to Sprinkles ice cream on the pool deck (low fat frozen yogurt actually)

~signing for her own Ben & Jerry's was thrilling for her

~arcade games (expensive!)

~ice show-a must see

~other shows: we only saw 2, one was a take on Fairy tales with a spin that was hilarious for kids as well as adults, and the other was an end of cruise montage where they showed recaps of the cruise on video, a comedian and some singing and dancing-very nice.

~speedo spotting ("Mom, speedo alert, 3 o'clock! ewwwwwwwww!")

~our nightly walk on the promenade before or after dinners, either a pre-dinner snack or post dinner cookie for later at either the cafe or sorentos

~lounging on the top deck under the stars, talking about how she was when she was a baby

~checking out our nightly towel animal and trying to re-create it

 

The list goes on and on-you and your daughter will have a BALL. Enjoy!

If a show will have a mature theme, there is usually a very explicit mention of the show being "For Adults Only" or something along those lines. I know in the past when I've sailed on Celebrity that they usually have one late-night comedy show which could be a bit R-rated for the more junior level cruisers. But to Celebrity's credit, they clearly stated multiple times that this show is intended for adults only, etc., even going to far as scheduling it for something like 10PM.

You should probably do a Disney cruise, rather than a "mainstream" line. On several of our RCI trips, there were women at the pool in thongs (bathing suits--no shoes!) and once or twice, a few women would be topless. They were always told to cover-up by the staff, but for awhile, all could be seen!

None of this would bother me with a 10 year old--after all, if it's not YOU doing it, it really shouldn't matter, but I see where you're coming from!

Anytime you're outside of your home, your kids can and will be exposed to things you may not approve of. Not much you can do about the public!

I must say that all three cruiselines that we have used all had very good children's programs. I'm not saying that because we had children in them. I'm saying it because we didn't see that many kids. They were there but not where we were. It was pretty nice.

 

I'm sure that your youngin can find something interesting to do. Most ships offer two shows, one for early dining and one for late. You could watch the early show and determine if it was suitable for your daughter.

Overall, imho you can take kids on a cruise.

Wow! I have never seen anyone in a thong and certainly not topless on my cruises. I have seen some men in some tiny Speedos which was more disturbing to me.

We have traveled with my two sons and niece and nephew ages 6-12 and never that anything with the exception on the "Adult content" late night shows that might be inappropriate.

I think she will enjoy the production shows and Ice shows (depending on cruise line). The comedians are mostly adult (but not all), and some of the adult game shows may not be appropriate.

 

If someone wears a thong at the pool, there's not much you can do about it....she'll have to learn about the real world at some point.

So what is the difference in the child seeing somebody dancing in a costume that has a thong bottom and seeing somebody with a thong bathing suit? I don't have children so maybe if I did I would know.

IMO there really isn't a diffrence, but it is easier for me to distract said child away from swim suit versus it being in a show I have gone to see.

The early shows are for the whole family. I've never seen a thong used as a costume. There are some circque-du-soliel type segments, where there are minimal costumes, but it's all very artistic, not what I would consider adult in nature.

 

The late-night shows are geared for adults only....so take the family to the early shows and enjoy. The put the kids to sleep or into one of the kids programs, and enjoy the late night shows.

On the other hand...

 

On our last cruise, there were a couple of numbers in a dance revue (main show, not the late-night adult show) that featured booty shorts. I was kind of surprised. I spend alot of time in the dance world, so I wasn't shocked, but I'm sure the teenage boys in the audience got a big kick out of it.

I've been on 2 Carnival cruises where the female dancers wore thong-type costumes for the Vegas-style production shows. The shows were not advertised as adult themed. No one seemed to object.

We've taken our DS on four cruises (he's now almost 7), and never once has he wanted to see a show or anything. He's always wanted to be in the kid's programs. The one time in the evenign he did want to do something with us, we were on the Grand Princess and we went to MUTS, and we did enjoy that as a family.
