Do you need advice about Stockholm?

I'd start a new thread but don't know how so I'm hoping someone can help.

The Vessel Calls site shows the Norwegian Star is docking here July 28. I read it is a buoy and we will be transported to dock. Anyone know where that dock is? Trying to figure out about transportation. May have to just book a tour cuz I don't want to be caught in the middle of nowhere!!

Can anyone provide information? Thanks.

Don't worry your ship will dock at a very central location in fact it is as central as it gets (almost).

A tour is definitely not needed.

More info here: http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=2052272

We are going 2 days pre-cruise, staying at Radisson Blu Waterfront. Looking for restaurant suggestions for a nice dinner. Maybe something local or unusual as well as typical fare.

Some advice here: http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=2000275

There is also a very popular restaurant in Gamla Stan called Fem Små Hus (five small houses).

http://www.femsmahus.se/

And a quite recently opened Viking theme restaurant in Gamla Stan called Aifur.

Perhaps try one of the places that offers Strömming that I mentioned here:

I looked at the web site for both Fem Hus and Aifurs. They look absolutely charming. I went to their menu and chose what I thought my husband and I might order, shared appetizer, entree, dessert and wine. The bill came our to SEK 1310 or $194. Soooo, figure $200 for a nice meal for two? I read that Stockholm was expensive.

Any charming less expensive restaurants? Do these places serve lunch at a reduced rate?

Tack

Please to ask, on our forthcoming cruise we are docked at Stasgonson (spelling?) Can we walk to the palace? or is there a bus to take nearby.?

What would be the number of the bus and cost? Thank you for your advise

Stasgoson? No such place in Stockholm. ;)

However I assume that you mean Stadsgården (or more correctly Tegelvikshamnen).

What bus to take and what it costs depends on where you want to go, what you want to see and when your ship arrive.

A single use ticket or ticket card costs 36SEK which is about 4 Canadian dollar.

It also depends on if your ship docks at Stadsgården S160 or Stadsgården S167.

This is for the latter:

Multiple buses passes by the bus stop called Londonviadukten, browse back a page or two or three and you will have lots if info.

If it's walkable also depends on where you want to go. Royal Palce is about 3km away and will take about 40 to walk:

Vasa museum is too far to walk from Stadsgårdskajen.

Many restaurants serve lunch which usually is called "dagens lunch" (today's special).''Unfortunately I am not that familiar with restaurants in Stockholm.

Perhaps you can find something at: http://www.restaurangguidestockholm.se/en

Thanks for the advice. I read about a place that specialized in wild game that changed menus frequently . I know it is not much to go on but I saw the web site just can't remember the name.

Could it be http://www.theflyingelk.se/ ?

Does Celebrity cruises offer a shuttle from Frihamnen dock to Gamla Stan? If so, do you know the cost?

I don't know, but there are public buses (#76 towards Norra Hammarbyhamnen) which you can use to get from Frihamnen to Vasa and/or Gamla Stan.

It runs on every day of the week but on Saturdays and Sundays it's first departure in the morning isn't until 09.07 (9am).

Royal Caribbean certainly offer a shuttle service so I'm sure Celebrity do too. Am at Arlanda airport now...... we had a day and a night docked at Frihamnen..... what a fabulous city..... so much to see and do.

Cab from Frihamnen to the airport was fixed price 470 SEK. We were 3 with suitcases and carryons. Took maybe 35 minutes at 0630 on a Sunday morning....

Thank you both for the information on the shuttles and cabs. We are very excited for our cruise next May. Hope the 11 months goes fast!

So much to learn about and plan as this part of the world is all new for us.

"Stockholmers - your new guide to Stockholm"

The ten videos feature people like Jonas the geocacher, Madde the skateboarder, Sam the runner, Öivind the grandfather, and Otilia,

who found love on the subway. The videos conclude with the hashtag #mystockholm and the pay-off "What's yours?". The aim of the campaign is to attract more visitors to Stockholm.

“Stockholm’s beauty is well-known. We want to highlight the values of the city, such as quality of life, equality, creativity and friendliness, in a new way,

without linking it to more typical travel reasons,” says Eva Camel Fuglseth, Director of Leisure Travel, Tourist and Press Services at Stockholm Visitors Board.

We arrive on a weekday at about 9:30 am into the Stockholm Airport. We already have tickets for the Arlanda Express as well as a 3 day Stockholm card. How close is the Sheraton Stockholm to where the train station is in Stockholm (we will have luggage)? Is it best to walk or take a taxi??

Thanks

Since others were so helpful on this thread, I wanted to share my family's visit to Stockholm on 6/22/14 and our experiences with Mid Summer's weekend, early HoHo boats, visiting Ice bar on our own, etc. Hopefully this info will help others as well.

We were on the NCL Star docked at Stadsgarden 167. It was Sunday morning of Midsummer's weekend. It was surprisingly super chilly (high 51 deg F) and drizzly for part of the day. We got off the ship right at 8am and followed the lines on the ground towards the HoHo boats (5 min walk) for the early trip to Vasa. We were expecting to see a Redsightseeing boat because I had written both companies before the cruise and Red said they would have the early boat, but Stromma specifically said they would not have an early boat. So it was to my surprise that we walked up and saw a Royal Sightseeing (Stromma) boat loading up passengers and no Red boat to be seen. Weird. So we purchased our Royal Sightseeing HoHo day passes and loaded up on the boat. About 10 mins later a Red Sightseeing boat pulls up next to ours, but the operator still kept pointing people towards Royal. So my guess is that the two companies have a deal worked out, that the first company there gets the first group, then the next company takes the second group, etc. The operator waited for the boat to fill up, so we didn't end up leaving the port until around 8:30am, which is the same time Vasa opens. The operator said that they would be running the direct shuttle ride to Vasa until 9:30am, so I'm guessing they had maybe 1 or 2 more trips after ours.

Got to the museum around 8:45am and paid for our tickets, there were already a few small group tours arriving at that time, but the museum was still pretty quiet. The first english video started at 9am, and the first english tour started at 9:30am. We decided we wanted to explore on our own first to see as much as we could before the mases invaided. We started at the bottom floor and worked our way up. We had a good hour before things started getting crowded. On our way out we watched the video (swedish with english subtitles). We spent around 2 hours total in the museum, and felt that we saw everything.

We caught the HoHo boat around 10:45am and headed to Old Town (Slussen stop). We did the Rick Steve's Old Town walking tour in reverse, starting at Slussen and ending at the Palace. We noticed that most stores in Old Town seemed to be open, but the streets were fairly quiet. Since it was Sunday, the churches had services going on, so there were signs No tourists allowed. We probably would have wandered around Old Town longer, but we were trying to escape the rain. Since we had time to kill before the changing of the guard at 1:15pm, we decided to check out the Palace Armoury museum which was recommended in Rick Steve's book. The musuem was worth a look, but nothing spectacular. We spent about 35 mins there. On our way out we caught the parade for the changing of the guard (around 1pm), but we decided not to circle back for the actual ceremony.

Instead we starting walking to the Ice Bar, because we didn't know how long it would take us to get there. We booked the ice bar ourselves online a few days prior for a 2:15pm slot (after the cruise ship tours visit). Walking from the Palace to the Ice bar was no problem for myself, my sister and my mother, but I could tell that my father had his share of walking by then. It took about 20 mins, and was slighly uphill. We found the Nordic Hotel, but had to get help to direct us to the Ice bar which is located in the Alley behind the hotel and train station. We were very early (around 1:30pm) and there were still cruise ship tours inside the ice bar. We found a bench outside the train station and rested for a bit, while checking out the taxi situation for our ride back to the port. There was a line of taxi's outside the train station, so no problem. Once we saw the cruise group start to wander out of the ice bar we went in, and they said they could take us earlier then our appointment (around 2pm). There was only my family of 4 and one other family inside, we it was pretty cool. The inside is alot smaller than what I thought it would be looking at pictures. They had pre-made vodka drinks sitting out on the counter, one flavor only (we did not get to choose our own). The drinks were very watered down. I'm thinking that they were left overs from the large cruise groups, so that kinda sucked. The bar tender was also not present with us inside the whole time, so even if we wanted another drink we didn't get a chance to order one. But we took a bunch of pictures and spent about 20 mins inside.

We thought that we would have to rush back to ship for all aboard at 3:30pm, but since we got into the ice bar early, we actually were really good on time. We got a taxi with a good rate and headed back to port. The ride only took about 7 mins, and the cost was around 170 SEK. We had just enough SEK cash on us to pay for the taxi without having to use a credit card, so it worked out perfectly.

Our day on our own in Stockholm cost us about 600 SEK each, and we had a great time. Stockholm is a beautiful city, and we would definitely go back in a heartbeat to explore more.

We are a group of 6-7 adults and our cruise ends in Stockholm on June 28, 2015. What is the best way to get all of us and our luggage to where we are staying (likely an Airbnb rental in/near city center.) Should we split up into 2 taxis or should we schedule a van to come pick us up?

Thank you!

A van/minibus can accommodate up to 6-8 people but I don't know how much luggage they can take besides the passengers.

I would recommend you to contact the taxi companies and ask about the capacity of their mini buses.

Personally I would take a mini bus if they can fit all of you and your luggages as I think it would more economical.

We will be docking at Frihamnen. I'm familiar with the option of taking bus #76, but I think we might prefer to take a cab to Vasa to shorten the time and reduce walking. I know to select a reputable cab company.

Are cabs readily available and easy to hail?

What is the estimated fare from Frihamnen terminal to Vasa museum?

What about from Vasa to Gamla Stan/Palace?

Gamla Stan to Hard Rock Café?

Hard Rock Café back to the port?

I realize that public buses would be cheaper, but not having to worry about getting on the correct bus, transferring, extra walking, etc. is worth the extra cost for us.

TIA.

For prices, you can calculate yourself by using the specified priced at the taxi companies websites:

http://taxistockholm.se/sv/Priser/

http://www.taxikurir.se/orterisverige/stockholm/taxikurirstockholm/varapriser.4.7017056e11fcce66e6580002397.html

http://www.taxi020.se/boka-taxi-020/priser/

I would guess that the prices will end up at around 150-200SEK.

Are there coupon for taking buses?

There is not anymore but you can buy single use travel cards in advance and the cost of those is the same as a single use ticket.

The cost is 36SEK ($5.2) and they are valid for unlimited travelling with SL in zone A in 75 minutes from the time you first use it.

This means that you can buy as many as you need (for a whole day) at the same time while a single use ticket only is valid 75 min from purchase.

you can find where to buy cards and tickets at: http://sl.se/en/ click sales points.
