  1. People with very early flights (from places like Budapest that require a connection to get across the Atlantic for North Americans) have been known to have transportation VERY early in the morning. As LHT28 says, as long as you overnight there you can get off any time. The cruise line will make arrangements for getting you to the airport; whether included or whether you have to pay for it.
  2. I’m not sure about Geiranger in mid-May. It may be too early for some roads to be open, although likely waterfalls will be spectacular.
  3. The OP shouldn’t need a passport check either, you are only in transit in the UK. (It would have been different pre Brexit.)
  4. If you are connecting to another international destination you shouldn’t have to go through customs. I believe you must go through security.
  5. I wonder whether that will disappear now that a court has ruled that they can't code share with American Airlines.
  6. When I did Vienna to Basel with Uniworld in 2011, it was actually 2 legs Vienna to Nuremberg and Nuremberg to Basel. They did have an excursion for those of us staying on board. However, it was 12 years ago.
  7. Just to clarify, those lines are for security. In addition, of course, there is a NEXUS line for US customs preclearance. On the arrivals side, there are NEXUS lines for all international arrivals.
  8. Bruges and Bergen beat Stavanger and Haugesund in my view.
  9. See if a store or other entity will take Euros for a purchase and give you change in the local currency.
  10. To be honest, roll calls don't really work for river cruises. First, when excursions are included there isn't really a need for a roll call to find people to share excursions with. (It is also difficult to coordinate your own excursions because timings of river cruise boats are quite fluid.) Second, when there are fewer than 200 passengers on a boat (and frequently considerably fewer) the chances of finding someone on your particular sailing are slim. In general, most entries in the river cruising roll calls are for specific routes rather than a particular sailing. Sometimes they are split by company, sometimes the route and its ports are common to a number of companies. They discuss the excursion choices, and any optional excursions, and people weigh in with suggestions. That said, much of the discussion goes on in the regular river cruising forum. https://boards.cruisecritic.com/forum/115-river-cruising/
  11. I used to like Coke Zero (I’m really a Diet Pepsi fan), but they changed the formulation here in Canada, and I now find it undrinkable. One thing to note is that the taste varies in different locations; soft drinks are tweaked to the tastes of the local population.
  12. I had a bit of an accident in the Netherlands which took me to the emergency department in Dordrecht for an x-ray and a cast. It was a holiday there, so no one in the accounting office. I left all my info and didn’t hear from them until months later, in January or February of the following year, when they sent me a bill completely in Dutch. (I assume that the accountants in processing the year end accounts found the unpaid bill.) I managed to more or less translate it, but then I had great difficulty finding a way to pay it. They didn’t accept credit cards, and at the time I had no way to send a bank-to-bank transfer. Ultimately, we came up with a method, but it was really a pain.

  14. I assume that you mean businesses which deposit cash into their accounts. True?
  15. Comic Sans on my iPhone becomes a completely unreadable cursive font.
  16. Generally, as soon as you put in a North American credit card the language will default to English.
  17. Before my first trip to the Netherlands I tried to learn some Dutch. I found most of it very difficult, but I managed good morning, good afternoon, and a few more phrases. And, since I can pronounce the guttural sound of their “g” , I sound good. However, people would frequently start speaking to me in rapid Dutch, and I had to say in English that the greeting had been the extent of my Dutch!
  18. I have a little over a year to come up with some Norwegian myself. My cruise is in June 2024.
  19. I wouldn’t bother with more than a few greeting words in Norwegian. I think you will find the locals speak very good English.
  20. You might do better learning some Catalan for Barcelona. When I was there locals weren't anxious to speak Spanish. By the way, I tried to learn some Catalan, and gave up. It is a VERY difficult language.
