Is it possible to make 10:30AM flight out of FLL???

In January we are cruising out of Miami. Never before flew into and out of FLL. Usually used Delta and went directly into Miami, but much better prices thru FLL with Southwest. Is it possible to get to FLL for a 10:30 AM flight???

I don’t know that I would risk it with the potential for traffic and TSA lines. Miami would be doable but FLL would be pushing it likely.

Is it possible? Yes if everything works perfectly, you would need to be there by 9:00 and sometimes you aren't off the ship that early.

Are you likely to make it? Maybe, maybe not, I wouldn't try it, in fact I wouldn't do it out of Miami.

What is your backup plan if you miss the flight, especially since most flights, even on Southwest are full.

And keep in mind returning cruises from Fort Lauderdale as well... those people have a quicker trip to start crowding into FLL and getting into check in lines and TSA lines. Boarding for your flight will likely start around 9:40-9:50... and any traffic delays could completely throw your plans out the window.

I’ve made a 9:45 flight twice. Be in first group to get off. Taxis right outside. Ten minutes in cab. Been at airport before 8.

I would not rely on this being the norm considering drive time is easily 30 minutes with no traffic. It’s 27 miles port to airport.

Ten minutes is impossible.

In answer to OP question, yes it's doable. I have done it many times, but always the ship docked on time. The odds are greatly in your favor of making your flight with ease.

Yes. But you have to do self walk off and be in line early. Self walk off normally starts around 7:30. You will be at the airport by 9:00.

Interesting since you wrote this after disembarking your recent Getaway cruise:

Footnote: This morning, it took a [very long] while for CBP to clear the ship for disembarkation. The gangway did not open until 8:00. From where we were in line in the casino (by the chandelier) it took about 25 minutes to get to the gangway when the line started moving Then another 15 minutes to get to the curb (now around 8:40 am against or plan of 7:30).

You’re either thinking of the wrong cruise port or wrong airport. You can’t get from Port of Miami to Fort Lauderdale airport in 10 minutes.

I'd be very nervous about that, particularly if you're disembarking on a Saturday or Sunday. Lines just to get through security at FLL on the weekends can be quite long -- so much so that they have to break people into groups just to get through security and lines can back up to the parking garage. That happened twice to us when we were flying back to the Midwest after a cruise in winter. Not to mention transport from POM to FLL.

Sounds like you are still on the fence? Is there a flight that's a bit later that you can grab? Highly recommend that! SW is has been good at letting you move up to an earlier flight if space is available and you arrive with time to spare.

Possible yes, if you walk off the ship with your luggage and do it early. Would I try it? Nope. The port of Miami is quite a drive from FLL. and there is always the possibility the ship doesn't even get cleared for disembarkation as early as scheduled.

Weather issues, medical emergencies, ship clearance by authorities before opening for debark, traffic from Miami to FLL, FLL airport security backups - I would never chance such an early flight. Why have a relaxing cruise and then stress over making a flight? Take a later one if possible.

I'll echo this. The odds are very much in your favor to make your flight. You would do self-disembark as early as they allow, carry your own luggage off. As long as things are on-time, then making a 10:30 flight is very much doable.

Like anything in life, no guarantees. If something out of the ordinary happens and you miss your flight, then you figure it out and get on another flight. That's how life works. It's not the end of the world. But providing things go normal, as they normally do, then making this flight shouldn't be difficult at all.

To give an example. We did self-disembark off Escape in February. Off the ship shortly after 7AM. Got in the truck and headed home. We live about 15 minutes further than the Fort Lauderdale airport. Get on I95 and it's shut down for a major accident. Get off the highway and take a different route.

We were home by 8AM. We live further than the airport and a major accident shut down I95 completely.

If you can get an early afternoon flight and would prefer that, then why not? But I'm guessing there isn't another good option for you.

Be careful about taking an earlier flight with SW. Two weeks ago we were in Denver and were departing on a 5 PM flight. We decided to get to the airport early and try for an earlier flight. We arrived at 11 am. We were told we could get on an earlier flight but since we were ticketed on"Gotta get away prices" we would have to pay the difference. The difference in price was almost $1000 for the both of us. We decided that leaving 4 hours earlier for that amount was nuts. Just a thought for changing flights.

The biggest benefit to SW is that you can cancel/change your flight on the fly without penalty (except of course to pay an additional fare if the flight you're changing to is more expensive). If you book it and there's a delay, you can just call SW and see what else is available for that day. If you're willing to take the risk, then go for it.

If you get there late, Airlines put you on the next available flight to your destination, but you never know when space will be available. If your ship is in on time and you get off the ship/customs in a reasonable manner, not a problem. However I have had fiasco's and missed flights. Question is are you a gambler? How much money would be saved by booking the earlier flight? Cab ride cost?

I don't gamble in the casino and I don't take chances on missing my flight home.

If you miss the flight plan on staying overnight at the airport. All of the flights out will probably be full, except, of course, the flight you missed which will have a couple of empty seats.
