What is "cheap"???

Recommended Posts

Trying to work out the meaning of cheap ...

Where I come from (UK) cheap is good :), it's a bargain or something you get for a knock down price and is the opposite of expensive. For example - after getting great price drop, you'd be able to say your cruise was really cheap.

Am I right in thinking describing something or someone as cheap in the US is a way of insulting them?

It can go both ways. You could say, "I got this shirt really cheap" and that is good, or someone could be "really cheap" and that is bad.

I have a friend who has the wherewithal to spend large sums of money in the casino, (and she happens to live near a casino) She spends enough and earns enough points to do all sorts of things. The casino recently started a gift promotion x number of points and get a gift. She gets a gift every single time she goes and that is ususally 5 times a week. She has amassed 20 candle sets, 18 decorative leaf plates, 14 cast iron skillets, and 22 piggy banks. She collets these items with no idea of what to do with them but since the casino is "giving" them to her she has to take them. That is what i think of when i hear cheap. Someone who wants something that is free just because then can and not because they need it. If she would only take 3 or 4 of each gift it would be fine but to collect that many "free" gifts is cheap.

Collecting that many "free" gifts isn't cheap.......it's hoarding.

There is a difference between cheap and frugal, with cheap being negative, and frugal being wise. Should one "stiff" the wait staff of a tip, because, they ate in a buffet, is cheap. Frugal, is getting an inside stateroom, so one can afford the tips. Other words, making sacrifices, while still having fun.

Cheap= declaring no one should own a BMW when a KIA will do.

Frugal=buying that BMW at an incredible price

Cheap=rum runners

Frugal=knowing how many drinks one can afford and enjoying those budgeted drinks! Not "drinking for volume"

Have you tried ParknGo out of FLL? About 1/2 the airport cost for parking with a free shuttle. Frugaler, or smarterer (cheaper) I think they are $7 per day with 1 free on longer parking.

Do you mean the airport parking or the cruise ship parking?

To me, being cheap is bickering over the price of an item when you can very well afford it. My husband is in business for himself (service) and when he raises his price, which he rarely does, the ones who are the most well-off are the ones that complain the most.

But...4 adults in an inside cabin definitely warrants cheap. Being miserable just to save a few bucks is a lousy way to spend a vacation.

I'm not sure, but I think the UK version of the US "cheap" would be "mean."

Cheap is the mother that I'm ashamed to know that super glues her child's shoes back together while she purchases a new laptop to do nothing more than play games on it. And to add insult to it she didnt even use the coupon that was in the flyer to give her the additional $50 off. Really it's cheap & STUPID!

CHEAP IS ON A SHIP IS........

We Only drink in the CL....usually about 10 drinks each per night.....3.5 hours....Going to the WJ afterwards and then to bed.....Good times though!

Buying 12 bottles of booze to bring home because Absolut is half price on the ship then at Costco.....

Winning many trivias...but only kepping the good prizes and letting the runner ups take the bad ( Key chains ) prizes.

Doing a 15 day TA on the Liberty in Oct 2011....an E2 balcony for less then $725.00 PP including everything and flying on Milage.....

Oh no.....14 nights in the CL......8 to 10 drinks a night....IS THAT TOO MANY DRINKS? :)

Thankful we have a weekend home that is 15 minutes from the Betty Ford center in Rancho Mirage....

Cheap is delibertly on purpose coming up with reasons not to pay tips. I dont mean if somthing really bad happens. I am talking about people who gripe about the smallest thing and then use that as a reason to pay less of a tip or none at all. Then they feel justified and then they do this over and over and over again as a specific cheap behavior.

Some one who is cheap knows the cost of everthing and the value of nothing !

That is absolutely correct! Took the words right out of my head!;) Although as a note, cramming 4 people into an inside stateroom is not necessarily cheap as crazy. It also depends on WHO you are rooming with as to whether it is crazy or not. Everything is relative; would I do it? NO!

Cheap is what you are called by people who don't know how to budget their money.

If you saw a $300 price drop on your cruise that you have booked 1 year from now, are you going to call for the price drop? The person that wasn't monitoring price drops and paid $300 more will be calling you cheap.

Cheap is when someone is taking money out of someone else's personal pocket, like not tipping or tipping really cheap. My own Dad was guilty of being a cheap tipper, so now I tip extra to make up for my embarrassment as a child.

But I often get a inside cabin or one I can see out, not a balcony. I can barely talk my sister into sitting out on a cruise even on the pool deck when there are people around, let alone on a balcony which would be wasted on us.

I drive a 12 year old paid for Saturn (still has less than 80,000 miles on it):)... To me, a car is nothing more than something to get you from point A to point B and I can't understand people who drive expensive cars or have to have a new car every few years... don't they realize that cars depreciate in value as soon as you drive them off the lot??? You will never get what you paid for that car...

To me, being frugal is being mindful of how and what you spend your money on... not living above your means, not trying to keep up with the Joneses....

Being cheap is when you make a spending choice that has a negative effect on someone else and you do so without regard for that person... I associate "cheapness" with selfishness....

Sorry, but everything that one spends his/her money on does not also have to be a good investment. If someone enjoys a certain type of car what difference does it make unless they are buying them at the expense of feeding their kids or something like that.

Why do you spend money on cruises? Plenty of people would consider that as a pretty frivolous way to spend money. When the cruise is over all that is left from the money you spent are memories and pictures. Both of those have a resale value of approximately.... zero dollars.

I agree with those who say that cheap is making choices that affect other people's lives (i.e., not tipping) or making imoral or illegal choices (i.e., sharing soda mugs between passengers).

I'd add that cheap is also making choices that throw one's life out of balance. By that, I mean that we all have a balance, a ratio of money to time spent . . . for example, a person who works a second job but then spends the extra money on fast-food meals (because he has no time to cook) is making a choice that's throwing his life out of balance. He's spending too much time on an activity that doesn't actually help financially. On the other hand, spending 2 minutes checking for a cruise price drop on the computer (which might garner a savings of several hundred dollars) is time well spent.

Skipping the last night in the main dining room just to AVOID paying tips to the servers. CHEAP AND TACKY! (this excludes of course that you aren't in the specialty dining and have auto tipped)

But how can you tell the difference. We ALWAYS prepay our tips with our final payment for the cruise. Sometimes I just don't want to eat in the dining room on the last night - it's sometimes just too much of a rush with getting packing done and getting the bags put out. BUT I always feel like everyone is watching me thinking - oh yeah, they are cheap, didn't pay their tips!!
