Experience of non smokers

The following is a quote from WCB's blog - the Q&A session with Stein Kruse.

The second question was about smoking onboard. Ninety-three percent do not, while 7% do. The new restrictions on smoking will go into effect after the world cruise on April 28th. There will be no smoking allowed in the cabins, but there will be designated areas on the ship to smoke. Stronger ventilation systems are being installed fleetwide. Eventually, Mr. Kruse predicted that the ships will be smokefree.

Hope we all live long enough to see it. :D

The Smokers might not...:p

(Editing to clarify that I don't mean the Smokers won't live to see it... I meant the Smokers might not hope we all live to see it. I don't want to offend anyone)

Funny, that is really! Sad, in a way too. Smokers won't live to see it, maybe. And that's a fact, Jack. Or whatever your new name is. Don't worry about offending people here. It's what happens all the time. I've been a lurker for years and decided it's about time I say what's on my mind. Welcome, Asyouwish, is that the dining time?:)

Good Lord. Some people need to get a life and not take these message boards so seriously. Poster was just trying to add a little levity. Plus' date=' no one has to be subjected to anything, they choose to.[/quote']

Some folks got no sense of humor. I just couldn't resist. :p

Some of the posts make me smile. We have an upcoming 62 day cruise and booked an outside cabin (no Verandah) because we cannot see paying extra money for a verandah so we get to breathe smoke. The other day we were offered a very nice upsell to a suite with a large verandah and I told our TA we were not interested. When she asked why I simply explained that we cannot justify paying lots of extra dollars for the "right" to breathe 2nd hand smoke. She said, "just ask the smokers to please not smoke and you will be fine." How naive :)

You might want to find a TA that's not brain dead.

Eventually? When will that be? The next ice age?:D

The HAL ships will most likely become 'smokefree' at the same time that HAL introduces 'interactive televsions' in all staterooms! ;) (And neither will likely happen until the 'next ice age')!

Rounder, I don’t know about the other cruise lines but the smoking policy you stated for Windstar Cruises is out of date. You stated …

Where You Can Smoke: Smoking is allowed on the open decks, in cabins and on the port side of the lounge on all ships. It is also permitted in the casino and on the port side of the Compass Rose on Wind Surf only.

This is their current policy, and has been for some time

Smoking is permitted on the outside decks in designated smoking areas only.

Keep in mind that a year ago you had people saying that HAL would never restrict smoking in cabins. The rules across the cruise lines have gotten substantially tighter over the past year. I suspect that they will continue to do so noticeably in the future as well.

I wish there was a TA that would work out a deal with HAL to offer blocks of smoking and non smoking balcony and suite cabins on popular sailings. OR better yet have HAL take future requests and develop a computer program that would do the match ups.

I would gladly pay a bonus fee to have a suite cabin surrounded by other non smokers.

I am going to Celebrity this fall (really because they alone offer a 10 day Pacific Coast cruise ) but after 25 years of sailing with HAL I will definitely be "homesick".

The time is coming for HAL to move into the 21st Century. For many of us, it won't be soon enough, but it will happen to spite or in spite of those who feel as though they have the "right" to subject the rest of us to their second hand smoke.

As a dispassionate observer, let me summarize what I've learned so far in this discussion:

A representative of HAL has quite recently said 25% of its cruisers smoke. Perhaps this higher number than some have (hopefully but maybe not factually) suggested reflects HAL's projections of smokers who have migrated to HAL from Princess or Celebrity -- similar lines in many ways with more restrictive smoking policies. In this economic era, perhaps HAL feels they do not wish to alienate 25% of their customers by further limiting smoking.

Several smokers have said they will pay more to purchase a verandah. Some long-time cruisers, while unhappy, will continue to purchase a verandah as well and put their trust in "hope" that HAL will change their policy.* While those who've said they will no longer book HAL verandahs (and even fewer who would change lines) appear to be in the minority. It seems the net gain may be to HAL's advantage......financially speaking. At least for now.

According to the reports of some HAL cruisers, the verandah smokers on HAL appear to be unusually heavy smokers as compared with the national average. The American Lung Association says the average smoker smokes 15 cigarettes per day. Upon searching the web, it seems the best average figure for how long it takes to smoke one cigarette is 6 minutes. So, for an average smoker, 90 minutes per day. Even if a couple both smoked (and smoked at entirely different times, which makes no sense -- smoking being a shared social activity) the absolute most that an average smoking couple would be smoking on their balcony would be 3 hours/day.

.....Yet on HAL, there are staggeringly heavy smokers who smoke 24 hours a day, which means they must go through 240 cigarettes each!

Finally, some cruisers seem to feel that smokers, when engaging in an activity that is both legal and -- when smokers observe the current guidelines -- contractually allowed by HAL, are depriving them of their rights. To me, a bit like someone going to the dining room and occupying a table but complaining because others in the vicinity are eating. "But I'm taking medication that causes the sight and smell of food to make me physically sick," this person says. "My rights are being trampled!"

After reading hundreds of such smoking threads, I can never fully comprehend why so much energy is expended complaining about passengers smoking when clearly the cruise line, not the passengers, is setting the policy, and why people don't vote with their wallets if smoking is such a significant deterrant to enjoying one's vacation. If being exposed to possible smoke onboard is less important than one's brand loyalty or perks or enjoyment of cruising a specific line, then perhaps one shouldn't endlessly complain about what is, after all, a freely-made choice.

*"Hope" often doesn't work as well as one might like to think, having been proven to fail (among other things) as a birth control method, a retirement savings strategy, and a cure for most diseases.

I think everyone should be a little careful complaining about all the Smoking and Dress Code threads on Cruise Critic... if it wasn't for those threads, we'd have little to talk about... and a lot less entertainment!

:D:D

Please, never, ever forget the "how much wine can I bring onboard". It's like apples and cheese, a HAL staple. ;)

 Sadly on our 11 day cruise on the Zaandam in October 2011 we were never able to enjoy the Piano Bar. The smoke from the Casino and Sports Bar invaded the Piano Bar. I dont like smoke, so I avoid the areas that allow it. I know which door to go out on the aft, and so far have been lucky with our balconies being smoke free. It was just a bit disappointing not being able to enjoy the music in the Piano Bar. So, what does this mean??? Nothing, I still love HAL and will walk around to find a smoke free area. :D
