oncruisecontrol Posted August 31, 2013 #51 Share Posted August 31, 2013 fun are definitely not 80's . . . But gee, did you have to go all hair band with your playlist? :DWhat can I say? I went to high school in the mid eighties. I will always love the "hair bands". Believe it or not, I also love classical music, particularly Sibelius, Respighi, Shostakovich (esp. 7th Symphony), Khachaturian (esp. Gayne Ballet), Tchaikovsky, Beethoven (esp. 5th, 8th, & 9th Symphonies), Dvorak, Grieg, Orff (Carmina Burana), Rachmaninoff (esp. Piano Concerto No. 2 and Rhapsody on a Theme by Paganini), and Aaron Copland (listed last, but certainly not least). And you thought I had your head spinning with the "hair bands".:D
notentirelynormal Posted August 31, 2013 #52 Share Posted August 31, 2013 How about dropping a note in to each of your neighbours explaining that you sometimes like to listen to music during the day. You hope to keep it at a volume that won't disturb them, but if they are bothered by it at all, please give a quick knock on the divider to let you know. Make sure you leave a note with the people in balconies above and below you as well. Sound really travels on a ship.
gerif Posted August 31, 2013 #53 Share Posted August 31, 2013 My DH brings a small player on some cruises and plays latin music. We have never had any complaints when we used on the balcony. Did notice some folks not happy when he was playing it on the open deck above a spa pool, which I found strange since there was so much other noise around and the music was not any louder then normal conversations in the same area. See, that's the problem. While I wouldn't necessarily complain, that doesn't mean I'm not annoyed. Get him some earphones.
S&S Cruisers 1983 Posted August 31, 2013 #54 Share Posted August 31, 2013 This was an issue on our last cruise. The next door neighbor played music so loud that I wasn't sure if it was coming from the pool deck. It was guitar music at times and James Taylor at other times (who I love by the way). But when I am on the balcony, I like the peaceful sound of the ocean. I did not say anything and tried to use the balcony when he wasn't playing the music. Unfortunately it was almost constant. It was a bummer but I didn't want to ruin his cruise either.
OCruisers Posted August 31, 2013 #55 Share Posted August 31, 2013 This thread makes me wonder how many have actually heard people playing music on the balcony ... and, if so, did it bother them? LuLu ~~~~
tip Posted August 31, 2013 #56 Share Posted August 31, 2013 Yes, he did pay for his balcony, but he didn't pay for the neighboring balconies. Therefore, what he does should be confined to only his balcony. He should use earphones. He and everyone else needs to act with a sense of community, not selfisfness, whether it's music, talking loudly, etc. Very well said!
navybankerteacher Posted September 1, 2013 #57 Share Posted September 1, 2013 This thread makes me wonder how many have actually heard people playing music on the balcony ... and, if so, did it bother them? LuLu ~~~~ I have actually heard neighbors' music a couple of times - once seem mainly Beethoven - Third Symphony repeated several times (which I love, but not when it drowns out the murmur of the sea) - and another by a Motown devotee who drove me inside a couple of times. These days, many people are afraid to complain to a neighbor about anything. Who knows how they'll react. Just because they didn't complain does not mean they were not disturbed. People should not have to complain. We all should make effort to not impose our choices on others who don't want to hear our music. Hopefully when you noticed some folks were not happy when he was playing music on open deck, that he turned it down or put on earbuds?

I would much rather hear someone talking, than be subjected to listening to music that you may enjoy, but I think is horrid. Lerin Posted September 2, 2013 #65 Share Posted September 2, 2013 I would say if the neighbors can hear it, you have it too loud. Use the earphones. Agree, and it really doesn't matter what type of music you are listening to. What you feel is appropriate, may irritate others. I personally would have no issue with rap or rock, but country music would bother the heck out of me.

Point made? Seriously? This was a really fun discussion about boundaries, what your opinions about music are and whether certain things are appropriate. Donder1 Posted September 2, 2013 #67 Share Posted September 2, 2013 I have a hearing disability and music causes feedback in my ears which is distressing. And, yes, I have seen specialists, etc so please don't go off on this issue. The point is, one never knows what might be annoying to another on a balcony.... if they can hear, see or smell you. That goes for: music (ear phones are so well made now, come in a variety of forms and are very effective), loud conversation, particularly drunks and fighting couples, whining kids smoke from pipes, cigarettes, grass, grunting, moaning,,,well, you get the picture. I think most people just want to be kind and considerate and expect the same from others. Back to the point EARPHONES!

I wanted to get an opinion about a subject that we'd had a conversation about. I don't understand, why people have to get nasty. I'm always worried about being an annoying neighbor, but DH likes to listen to music on the balcony. Of course he can use headphones, but would it be annoying to use the little ipod speakers and listen to low level music? He likes James Taylor, Eagles, Chicago, etc. (lets say '80's music). Nothing hard rock, rap or country. Basically, easy listening stuff. (If he wears headphones, he tends to sing....), I KNOW that would be annoying! :D His view is that he paid for the balcony and has just as much right to listen to music as others do to talk loudly. I can see his point, but thought I would get some kind of consensus here. What do you say? As I said, if he was to hypothetically play music he enjoys in the balcony, I will hypothetically respond with music I enjoy on the balcony. I don't see why you are so upset. The point being that just because he likes that type of music, it doesn't mean that everyone will. Bottom ,one, would he find my music annoying and why would he think his might be any less annoying? griffy116 Posted September 2, 2013 #71 Share Posted September 2, 2013 In all the years that we have cruised with a balcony cabin, we've only had one occasion where we had neighbors that bothered us. It was a large family traveling together. Seems only the parents had a balcony cabin and their grown children and grandchildren were seriously lined up against the walls and railing virtually 24/7 and the doors to the balcony stayed open so that the comments from those inside the cabin and those on the balcony could be heard by all. They were out there when we got up in the mornings (at 8 a.m.) and there when we finally gave up and went to bed after 11 p.m...every day and every night. They had music playing, which I found less irritating than the large crowd shouting over the music in conversations. I found out what each of them did for a living, how much they had invested and in what stock. What kind of real estate they owned. What repairs they had made on their various rentals (along with the cost and the contractors they used). Which children had trouble with everything from teething (explanation for the constant screaming) to braces, the foods that caused gas and diarrhea for each of them..it goes on and on. The point is that being respectful is the key, but you should still be able to enjoy yourself. By the way, the 80's music wouldn't bother me at all. At least with the music played all over the ship, if I want to get away from it I can go to the seclusion of my balcony and enjoy some peace. Why would it be acceptable to then be bombarded with even more music there? It is MY cruise too. What you want to do with your vacation is your business, so keep it to yourself and not make it my business as well.
