What to do on the ship

Im looking for 'different' things one might do on the ship. not the typical bingo, casino, shows, trivia, etc. I tried to search but nothing came up. I thought I saw a thread but cant find it.

anyone have any ideas? something special you like to do?

I get on the ship, and decompress. I do not drink at all, and gamble very little.

 

Of course my favorite thing to do is "people watch".

 

The other options are to look at the daily schedule and pick something you would never do on land.

Think of the ship like a resort on land - you can do everything and anything other than get in a car and drive off. Amazingly, at least for me, while taking it easy and doing nothing is difficult for me to do on land, it's easy on a ship.

 

We like to:

 

• Lie around the pool and catch up on reading
  
• Make serious and momentous decisions like... hot tub or pool... or both
  
• Get a massage
  
• Get a facial
  
• Get my nails done
  
• Take a walk around the ship
  
• Take a nap (cruising amazingly both energizes you and makes it easy to nap)
  
• Take a cooking class
  
• Play trivia (we are so not game people but we love trivia on ships
  
• People watch <-- the Best Shipboard Activity Ever
  
• Explore the spa area which usually has saunas, relaxation rooms etc.
  
• Write "glad you're not here" emails to family
  
• Look out at the ocean and then realize it's suddenly an hour later
  
• go explore and find a snack
  
• spend that "quality" time together we think we're spending on land but somehow on a ship it's higher quality
  
• Read the daily calendar and find something that you've never done and do it just because you've never done it
  

Basically try to trust that you don't need to plan every minute because you will be a slightly different person on the ship and things you don't normally do will be appealing and things that used to bore you will be relaxing.

Just relax and read. DW and I take longer cruises (up to about 9 weeks) with plenty of sea days just so we can relax in a comfy deck chair with our Kindle. For those who want structured activities there are always plenty of things going on from various games, lectures, cooking demos, wine tastings, etc. And there are even movies although DW and I have never bought into the idea of taking a cruise so we can see 2nd run movies that we can see at home.

Recently we've travelling with our extended family. To add a little 'zing' to the cruise, I divide us up into teams and have a cruise scavenger hunt!

 

It started out as a way for the kids to get involved and have some specific pictures as memento of the cruise, but has blossomed into a full out competition now!

 

I have a list if you are interested. It won't be fun if there are just the two of you tho!

thanks everyone! we definitely have done most of the stuff listed in the daily activities fun times (including the hairy chest contest LOL). I am definitely writing some of these suggestions down!

 

Carole- instead of a scavenger hunt I created a bingo sheet. same items but randomly placed on each sheet. we will just hang out on the Lido and see who wins (all things can be found on the Lido)

A ship-wide scavenge-hunt is what we thought we were entering when we went along to an RCI-organised "Quest" on-board.:)

 

Those of you who know about Quest will know that it's very very different :o:D

And not something to get the kids involved in. :rolleyes:

A related question is asked by people wondering what to do on a ship. It is hard to understand the lack of imagination which would make people ask that. What do they do at home that they cannot do on a ship? Beyond going to work and driving a car, that is about it. There are entertainment options ranging from music, shows, movies to just watching TV - all more than most people have at home. There is a gym and a swimming pool and hot tubs - again more than what most people have at home. there is a library - admittedly not much of one - and internet - admittedly expensive, places to shop -admittedly restricted - and multiple opportunities to eat and drink.

 

There is also the opportunity to disconnect - which is not so readily available as at home - and to be alone with one's thoughts -- which might actually be what scares people.

Garden.

Except maybe on Celebrity, but I'm not sure how they would feel about me poking holes in their lawn to plant daffodils.

If you are a scrap booker or do crafts, take them with you. I found a nice spot that was semi-out of the way, but still had traffic. I met lots of nice people who stopped to talk or look at the scrap book AND I had over half the trip scrapbooked before we got home. I developed my own pictures on the ship, so I wasn't spending a fortune buying theirs [though I did get some!]

Since we get a cabin with a balcony, one of our favorite things to do in the evening is to sit out there and watch the submarine races.;) (I think most adults know what that means.:D)

We go to lectures, workout, play trivia, go to evening entertainment, talk with fellow guests and the crew and enjoy the dining. Some yoga, and paddle tennis and just enjoy being at sea and stopping at ports.

I think it really depends on the ship and line. I think the most unusual thing my husband has ever done was helping the first officer fix a broken door early one morning. Obviously it wasn't the responsibility of either of them, but they were quite content tinkering with it. :)

Our last three cruises were ones from our home port (about 50 miles away) so no flying to get there. Hubby finds it relaxing to play his guitar, so he brought his guitar, a binder full of music, and a folding music stand on those cruises. Once on board, he looked for a relatively quiet place (without the piped in music) to play during the sea days over the next two weeks.

I try to do different things on a cruise too.

 

Last cruise I really stepped out of my comfort area - dh & I attended some dance classes at his suggestion! They were 30 minutes and taught basic steps, we did the Samba, cha-cha, tango & basic waltz.(not all at once :) )

 

I've tried origami, scrapbooking and daiquiri tasting. I like doing the sudoku & word puzzles. Can't remember which line has them it the library daily.

 

I do like trivia too. It's funny because dh loves cruise bingo, but he'd never be caught dead playing it on land

 

I do like to look through the schedule and see what available for the day. I usually pick the 'off the beaten path' items.
