Am I crazy?

I have never been on a cruise so when they announced at our class reunion 2 years ago that there would be a class reunion cruise in Feb 2014, I was excited and booked with my classmates. Now that the cruise is next month, I'm scared. It's a 5 day Western Caribbean cruise out of New Orleans on the Carnival Elation to Cozumel Mexico.

I don't know why I am scared; I've flown, taken buses, and am an avid motorcyclist, but the thought of being on a ship out in a big old ocean with no land in sight is really starting to make me nervous. Am I crazy?

Can't attest to the level of your sanity...but I think it is normal to be anxious right before your first cruise. You will be fine and have a great time.

You can look forward to watching the younger ladies attempting to walk in heels while at sea on the first night (even on a calm sea). It is obvious rather quickly which ones normally were flip-flops 90% of the time.:D

LOL! You're not crazy!

To put your mind at ease...there is always another large ship..sometimes 2 large ships you can see (mostly at night all lit up) not far off on the ocean with you. You're not out there all alone! :)

Welcome to Cruise Critic cherryharley:)

It is so normal to be anxious about your first cruise. Everyone is!

You will have a wonderful time and very quickly your anxiety will disappear. There is so much to do and see. And you are going to be busy catching up with friends.

Let us know how everything goes and we won't be surprised if you are planning your next cruse:)

I was apprehensive as well before my first cruise. We took pretty much the same cruise as you for our first one, from NOLA, 5 nights to Mexico and back and were quite satisfied.

If you've never sailed before, take along some sea sickness medicine (I use dramamine) and take one at the first hint of discomfort. Most adjust easily.

You aren't crazy. I sorta had a bit of that scary feeling when we just took our first cruise, you know "being out there all alone in the emptiness" feeling but once step on board and actually are there there isn't any fear at all. You feel totally safe.

Welcome to CC.

The morning of our first cruise I actually threw up (before we left the house) because I was so excited and nervous at the same time!

Relax and enjoy !! You will have a great time. Think of all the friends you will be spending time with from school. The bigger the group the more fun you will have.

Being on a ship, on the beautiful ocean is very tranquil. I saw a rainbow at sea once. And all the stars at night shining so bright.

Come back and let us know what an adventure you had!

Happy Cruising!

I can't believe so many of you said you were nervous too! Thank you so much. I thought I was just being silly. Sounds like it will be fine once I am on board. I will certainly taking something with me in case I feel seasick. I think seeing another ship off in the distance will be reassuring too. I am not so nervous about the class reunion part of it.... Once "John" (name changed) showed up at one of the reunions as a female, complete with dress and heels, I figured if he/she could handle being around all our old classmates, so can I!

I am sure I'll be back with more questions once I've read through some of the newbie posts, and I will definitely let you know my thoughts after the cruise.

Thanks again!

I have the same fear. You walk in the pier building, from there into the ship like walking from room to room, and to your cabin. There is no feeling of being on a ship, and later you will only feel the slight movement. Not like being on a plane or on a small boat at all. You won't feel "out there", you will feel more like in Las Vegas :p

I have a relative that had the same feelings on her first cruise. She did not enjoy the cruise and will not take another one. She will go to oceean front resorts and has a wonderful time there. Others can feel claustrophobic on a ship. Most of us on these boards love cruising and don't really understand your feelings.

Even the smaller ships are large enough that you won't feel alone in the middle of the ocean. Ships are like floating cities and plenty big enough to make you feel comfortable and surrounded by friendly passengers and staff and beautiful decor, food, activities--you may want to book another cruise before you leave the ship.

A few weeks after my last class reunion, we started talking on our FB page about avoiding a ten year wait and getting in one five years later. Someone suggesting a cruise -- there's three and four day cruises out of Long Beach on Carnival, so many of us said the cost isn't that bad and for those of us who still live arond here, not a bad drive, and for anyone else, just one hotel night stay before a cruise. I was along those who were "yea, let's consider this." Only one person said she went on one cruise years ago and won't do another.

The woman who organized our 40th sent off a PM to me telling me to stop talking up a cruise (I'm not sure she was accusing me of starting the talk, but I sure felt like she was) as we're not going to do that. I sent a couple of PMs to a few others saying "how dare she?" which they agreed (it looks like many of us are addicted to cruising:)). Since then, there's been talk of doing a 42nd reunion this year, with people talking about maybe going to one of the So Cal casinos (not my idea of fun). But recently, it's the talk is about having a hors de'ourve party/dinner/park the next day type of weekend. Hopefully not a book a hall and pay for that (the guy who took care of that angle ignored our pleas to make sure it wasn't too dark and noisy like our 30th at a night club...it's not pretty to have the music up too loud and the lights turned down when there's people over the age of 45).

If someone brings up a cruise again, I'll wait til a good number of others agree, before joining in the discussion.

It is too late to cancel so it does not matter what we think. But yes, I think you are crazy, not for taking a cruise but for taking a class reunion cruise. I just can't imagine doing such a thing but then again, I am not into stuff like that. I graduated from HS and never looked back.

I don't think you are scared. Maybe a little anxious about trying something new and exciting.

@Dayenu I love Vegas so if I'll feel like I'm in Vegas I should be fine. :)

It's like being in one hotel on the strip: you have activities, or lounge by the pool, a choice of restaurants, casino on most ships, evening show, room service, TV in the cabin... Give it a shot!

  • 2 months later...

Just wanted to come back and say that my friend and I were so nervous on the 5 hour drive to the ship. We both discussed how we were so out of our comfort zones, etc. but once we got on the ship we loved it! The cruise was fantastic and after the first 2 days I didn't even have to take anything for sea sickness. And we both slept so well! I can understand how people get "addicted" to cruising! Thanks for all the positive comments everyone.
