Walkie Talkie Question...

Recommended Posts

What walkie talkie works best on a cruise? Also, if anyone can help here-we have two Motorola ones now but are not that smart as to figure out how to use them with regards to what channel to use etc.... if anyone can help. Thank you!

We've taken a pair on every cruise we've been on for the last 5 or 6 years -- and never use them. There are only so many channels available and we find we're always listening to somebody else and can never reach one another. We do use them, however, when we're within a mile or so of home and have forgotten something. . . :)

Don't recommend using them at all.

There's no way to predict which channels will work.

We used them on our first cruise, but was more annoying than anything else.

Never used them again.

Make tentative plans at breakfast or dinner the night before....that way, you'll know where to expect everyone to be. It's not that hard to find each other. The majority of the ship is cabin space...you won't need to be searching hallways where your cabin is NOT! Pubic areas are limited, and you'll find you'll gravitate to the same places over and over. You don't need constant contact or walkie talkies.

. .?????

Read the sentence that swsfrail highlighted in her post. It reads "Pubic areas are limited" instead of "Public areas....", the words the author of that post surely meant. That missing "L" changes the entire meaning of the sentence, and in a very funny way. :D

We used walkie talkies in the past and had some luck when we changed the channel. We like using them with our boys who are all over the ship.

You may get more help posting this on the "Cruising Technology" forum, there have been a few threads about this there. Long story, short, the cheaper they are the worse they work, and the larger the ship, the worse they work. The ones used by the crew are 1-2 watt UHF, that works fairly well through steel. Much higher wattage, and you probably need a license for it, and you may interfere with ship's radio communication.

We gave up on walkie talkies years ago. We now bring our megaphones instead. They are much more effective in irritating the maximum number of people with the minimum of effort.

Another alternative would be 2 tin cans and a really long string.

DON

Since the radios essentially work line-of-sight on a ship, I would go with semaphore flags. But......well, that's kind of a Luddite thing.
