Muster drill question... Please dont flame me!

Before anyone slams me, I am just curious, not intending to do this.

Is there a way to avoid muster??

I have cruised a few times in my life  (wish more!!) and have always attended the muster drill as I know it is mandatory. Buuuuttttttttttt......

Does anyone actually check cabins to see if you are at muster? Can you actually find a way around it? I know that on my trips, they did not have a check list or anything to see if you were there. One time I even went to muster at another location.

Again, I know its mandatory and was wondering...

On the cruises I have done they take attendance. Princess scans your ship card and HAL takes roll call. So I doubt you can skip it. Nor should you. It's mandatory for a reason - all our safety.

Yes they do check the cabins and on our last trip they also started paging the people who were missing.

We had to bring our cards with us and they were checked off.

No excuse for missing muster I don't care how many times you have sailed. It is mandatory for a reason......

I can only report that on our DCL and HAL cruises we were required to show our room cards and get checked off a list. When the drill started the first thing they did was call out the room numbers that had not checked in yet. If one of the rooms wasn't there, we had to wait until the people were located and showed up. Makes for realllllly long drills. I don't recall if we had to check in on our Carnival cruise.

I've also read reports on a couple of HAL cruises where people have refused to go to the drill (needed my nap, did it on last cruise, etc) - they were packed up and escorted off the ship prior to the ship leaving. Not a way I'd like to start my vacation.

The room stewards open and check every room then put a usually red 'card' in your door slot because you are not in your cabin.

I have heard of 'private' musters for those who didn't show up the 1st day.

This is interesting and kind of alarming. In my 5 Carnival cruises, never have they checked people off or scanned a card. As I originally said, I know it is important and mandatory.

The main reason I asked this was becasue I thought I read on another thread about scanning your card. I wonder why then Carnival does not do this? I would assume they can get fined? The only thing I have seen Carnival do is put special wrist bands on kids under a certain age.

RCI is one who scans / checks SeaPass cards and will also check staterooms to assure no one is trying to avoid muster. The Captain will not "clear" the ship for departure until everyone on board is accounted for and confirmed at muster.

They also issue wristbands for children who will be in attendance of the youth programs on board to identify their muster station for the ship's personnel in charge of the program to assure they reach there properly in the event of an emergency.

Not sure about any fines that could or would be levied, but muster is a requirement and IMO perhaps it just reflects a different level of seriousness regarding assurance of attendance between the different cruise lines.

Every cruise I have been on has taken attendance at the muster drill (even before the Costa Concordia and the new rules), and we were all held waiting on one cruise while they searched for the missing couple.....yes, they checked their cabin.

Don't cause your fellow cruisers to wait and slow everything down by not taking part in a simple and painless safety protocol.

The International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea ("SOLAS"), Chapter III, Regulations 8 and 19, require musters and emergency instructions to be provided for passengers. There are no exceptions listed in this document. Which means NO ONE is exempt from attending.

Most cruise lines are very serious about following these rules, as is evidenced by this CruiseCritic report a couple of years back - Elderly Couple Kicked Off Luxury Cruise Ship After Refusing to Attend Muster Drill:

On my last HAL cruise, a set of people who did not show to muster we found and escorted off the ship before sailing! This information was provided at dinner with the Hotel Director when asked.

Six cruises on four lines, ALL took attendance, and NONE checked cabins unless the people didn't show to muster.

How do you know that they did not if you were at your muster meeting area? :)

Our cabin steward was one of our muster station captains on one of them. Seriously, they take attendance and physically look at every person in that muster station. Why would they bother to take the time to check cabins when everyone is accounted for?

boogs, I completely agree with your comments about the seriousness of muster and that it is mandatory to attend.

My comments regarding jut how serious one cruise line might take checking muster attendance versus another was in direct response the comments made by rene194215, (in particular that highlighted in bold) which I have referenced again in this post above your comments.

Is there anyone that has been on a Carnival ship and has been checked?

I see everyone who has posted has sailed with other cruise lines.....

We have done a Carnival cruise, but I don't recall whether we were checked off a list or not. I'll ask hubby, when he gets home if he remembers.

Many of these procedures changed about a year after the Costa Concordia sinking. I say this as a reminder to all to not cast back too far for 'how it is done.' I have not read the details of the process but it MUST have an audit trail to verify compliance later.

My memory on last Princess cruise was they scanned my ID card as I entered the muster location. A security staff was at each door and one 'beep' of the 'price gun' thingy and you were in. I could see this critical step being done and yet easy to forget.

I also see the point in requiring it every cruise as different lines will do things SLIGHTLY differently and both be compliant. Also, some subtle change in procedure could be done any time. The only way to know you know these changes are if you attend. I want to know all the details as saving my life in a crisis could very well hinge on some detail.

My 3 cents from Canada,

M

Carnival does not check cards or marks you off a list. They check the rooms.

HAL takes attendance and the Captains/Staff Captain will announce anyone who did not attend will be sent ashore and not permitted to sail. I have seen and heard this happen.

You must attend or you will not cruise.
