From your Australian cruise trips where is the best place to get Austalian dollars for US Dollars . iancal Posted May 29, 2015 #2 Share Posted May 29, 2015 There are lots of ATMS and banks within a very short walking distance of the International Cruise Terminal (not to be confused with White Bay).
Rare chemmo Posted May 29, 2015 #3 Share Posted May 29, 2015 We watched exchange rates for a couple of weeks before going on our cruise and purchased our Ausie dollars to take with us. Good exchange rate and no messing on arrival.
ozark74 Posted May 29, 2015 #4 Share Posted May 29, 2015 We stayed at the Sydney Harbour Marriott which was about 8 minute walk from the overseas cruise terminal. Used a bank atm which was across the street from the hotel.

TIA Just up the street across from the Marriott there a 4 banks which have ATMs. It is a short and lovely 1000 feet walk along the Quay and under the train tracks and up the street. There is a Starbucks on your right as you go across the street at the traffic light. We just came back from the Radiance Circumnavigation and spent 5 days in Sydney. Be prepared - it is just as expensive a city as London. You will need to know where the ATMs are located. :) Edited May 29, 2015 by socreader
emileg Posted May 29, 2015 #6 Share Posted May 29, 2015 (edited) There are banks all over the city, practically on every block, and most have ATM machines. However, if your card is a VISA debit card, look for the VISA sign on the machine. Edited May 29, 2015 by emileg
rkacruiser Posted May 29, 2015 #7 Share Posted May 29, 2015 As has been suggested by others, bank ATM's are the best way to obtain currency. I would suggest, in addition, having enough Australian currency with you to pay for any expenses once you are off the ship and until you are able to get to your hotel and/or a bank ATM. I have been able to obtain such currency at favorable rates and with no fees as a Chase Bank customer.
neverbeenhere Posted May 29, 2015 #8 Share Posted May 29, 2015 Call the biggest ugliest bank in San Diego. They may have AUS to "get rid of" at a good exchange rate.
Northern Aurora Posted May 29, 2015 #9 Share Posted May 29, 2015 We have been to Australia twice, and both times spent some time in Sydney (staying at the Sir Stamford at Circular Quay). ATMs are as common in Australia as they are in North America. Not only is one in the OPT, there are at least two under the Circular Quay trains, which is about a four or five minute walk from the OPT.

Rare OzKiwiJJ Posted May 31, 2015 #14 Share Posted May 31, 2015 (edited) Thanks :D.We also carry credit cards with no international transaction fees . Trying to find out if taxis take credit cards;) Yes, they do, but they charge 5% surcharge on top of the fare. It used to be 10% but new legislation came in to force in December 2014 that limits the surcharge to 5% - at least in the Sydney region. Rare erewhon Posted June 2, 2015 #19 Share Posted June 2, 2015 On a side note, do we need New Zealand dollars for there, or will they accept AUD? New Zealand dollars. I recently overheard a cruise ship passenger attempting to use English pounds, or Australian Dollars, neither of which were acceptable to the New Zealand shop owner.
