MaiTaiMary Posted August 7, 2015 #1 Share Posted August 7, 2015 Leaving for my cruise in 2 weeks. I hurt my knee and I won't be able to wear heels on my cruise. My dresses for formal night aren't "super formal", but definitely look best with a heel. I can't find anything that is flat, yet still looks nice! Any suggestions?? I just got back from shopping and I think I didn't have any luck because I don't have a clue what I'm looking for. I don't want a "flat, office-looking shoe". Yet, I don't think a dressier "flip flop" would work in the MDR on formal night. Ack! Help!

OCruisers Posted August 7, 2015 #3 Share Posted August 7, 2015 I just wear the flip flop style and don't worry about it. At least I can wear them comfortably. :) LuLu

awhfy Posted August 7, 2015 #7 Share Posted August 7, 2015 I wear flats too (13 foot surgeries). I find either blingy strap sandals or ballet flats work quite well. Good luck, hope the knee is ok
BND Posted August 7, 2015 #8 Share Posted August 7, 2015 I can wear heels, but I choose not to on a cruise. I bring wedges and flat sandals for casual night. For formal night I've found a pair of almost flat bejeweled sandals. I've watched too many women teeter on heels on a moving ship. Not to mention the marble floors and stairs that are not easy to navigate in heels. I also prefer to not be in pain lol. Point is, there are a lot of options that don't involve heels. And, right now, there's lots of clearances.
cb at sea Posted August 7, 2015 #9 Share Posted August 7, 2015 There are some fancy flats...something with about a 1/2 inch heel would be just fine. And, so you know....no one will be looking at your shoes! No worries!
auntjoy036 Posted August 8, 2015 #10 Share Posted August 8, 2015 MaiTaiMary, Best wishes for a speedy recovery. I found a pair of low heel elastic strappy sandals from Easy Street. Tiggeril, The next time I need help shoe shopping , I'm calling you. Fair warning, post surgery I'm a 7.5ww with a high instep and very tender toes. Having seen the beautiful collection you curated for MTM, I can't help but wish you were my personal shopper. Best wishes to you both. Anita Latte Posted August 8, 2015 #11 Share Posted August 8, 2015 Aw... When something happens beyond your control...and makes you have to do a change that you may not really want to do... I ruptured my ACL in February so have pretty much lived in flats since then. For the formal nights that were closer to injury...I really wanted a more stable shoe. I went in a completely different direction and bought metallic oxfords. If I couldn't wear a heeled shoe...then I was just going to embrace the difference. I went looking for a look and had found this idea: http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_jy8TxSEIVA...mayflowers.jpg Here's metallic oxfords with a nicer dress: http://media9.onsugar.com/files/2011...43f_olivia.jpg A bronze metallic functions like a nude on me so that's what I got. I wear them with no show socks. You may not be up for that look... I have a wide-ish foot that tends to swell when I travel so I felt more limited in my choices. I must advise that you wear a true flat. If you have an issue with your knee...any tweak could be much more upsetting for you than for others...catching a heel on anything (especially a little kitten heel) could be just enough to really throw off your balance and cause a compensation that would have a negative result. And any sort of wedge heel...the height of it may throw off your alignment just enough to cause issues...I just don't think it's worth it. Some great suggestions earlier...to add to them: http://www.zappos.com/seychelles-haunt-silver-metallic-suede http://www.dillards.com/product/Gianni-Bini-Kirrah-AnkleStrap-Flats_301_-1_301_505168992?categoryId=590169&di=04456498_zi_pink_marble&facetCache=pageSize%3D100%26beginIndex%3D0%26orderBy%3D1 http://www.dillards.com/product/Blue-by-Betsey-Johnson-Joy-Beaded-AnkleStrap-Ballet-Flats_301_-1_301_504110913?categoryId=590169&di=04120339_zi_champagne&facetCache=pageSize%3D100%26beginIndex%3D0%26orderBy%3D1 http://www.dillards.com/product/Vince-Camuto-Felise-PointedToe-d%C2%B4Orsay-Flats_301_-1_301_505174550?categoryId=590169&di=04458063_zi_black&facetCache=pageSize%3D100%26beginIndex%3D0%26orderBy%3D1 These are a bit pricy...but if the tan were nude-like on you or if the black worked with your dresses...could be very lovely on: http://www.dillards.com/product/MICHAEL-Michael-Kors-Hamilton-Cutout-PointedToe-Flats_301_-1_301_505485637?categoryId=590169&di=04553681_zi_dark_khaki&facetCache=pageSize%3D100%26beginIndex%3D100%26orderBy%3D1 Regardless of what you do...I hope that you can enjoy your cruise! Rare Scrapnana Posted August 8, 2015 #12 Share Posted August 8, 2015 I have had good luck at some of the discount chains finding reasonably priced flats. SteinMart is my first choice, but if you don't have one in your area try Marshalls, TJMaxx, and Burlington Coat Factory.
dazey Posted August 8, 2015 #13 Share Posted August 8, 2015 While I love the dressy heeled shoes and dream I could wear them again, I have settled on dressy flats(jeweled). I tried a safe pair of somewhat high heeled shoes last cruise but ended up taking them off every time I could and then just went to the cabin. DSW has a great variety and many on sale. I am sure you will look wonderful and feel great too wearing your outfit with comfortable and safe shoes.
conwakr Posted August 8, 2015 #14 Share Posted August 8, 2015 I don't bring heels on cruises. There are so many cute flats and sandals that are blingy. I guess I've never associated boats and ships with heels.
simplelife Posted August 8, 2015 #15 Share Posted August 8, 2015 With my foot and knee problems, I have not worn heels for years. I find that for me a very understated shoe is the way to go, focusing on yoru dress or other accessories. I have a pair of black patent, closed toe slingback pumps with a kitten heel (to me patent looks dressier than smooth leather or fabric.) When I found this comfortable pair, I also got I also got similar pairs in silver and in red. I'm glad I did because this year it seems there's not much out there in this style that is not either very flat or stiletto. I also have a pair of black patent flats. These 4 pairs have served me for years in various elegant, semi-formal, and formal occasions. Another route to go is a blingy/strappy sandal (flat or kitten heel) in metallic or a shiny patent matching your dress. There are a lot more heel heights available in sandals, it seems. I usually shop at DSW, Off-Broadway, or Steinmart, as well as my regional department store, Belk.
slidergirl Posted August 8, 2015 #16 Share Posted August 8, 2015 Just my opinion: Wear what you need to wear for your comfort with your injury. If anyone would turn up their nose and "tsk tsk" about your choice of footwear on formal night, it is their problem and you wouldn't want to associate with those folks any way. As someone who has the inability to wear heels due to permanent damage from a shattered leg injury, I never buy a pair of shoes based on it's looks. I can't afford to do that. Even now - there is a pair of shoes that I would LOVE to have to wear with my suits for work, but there is too much of a heel for my one ankle to handle. I'm having a "left brain/right brain" discussion on them -buy them and take them off when I'm not standing/walking at work or save th money and get something I can wear all the time… Ignore those who say "try the kitten heel" or "try a 1" heel"; they are not "walking a mile in your shoes" ;)
Rare Lois R Posted August 8, 2015 #17 Share Posted August 8, 2015 I have started to wear ballet flats with my evening wear...formal included. I don't have knee issues but it is just easier for me, they feel good and they go with my dressier outfits too. When you say you can't find any flats that look nice...not sure what you are looking for. I have a pair of Clark's that have about a 1/4 inch heel, they are black leather and I find them terrific:) Sorry about your knees and hope you find what you are looking for:) I am trying to find a photo to post..... t60 Posted August 9, 2015 #22 Share Posted August 9, 2015 O'vee got a pair of flat black strappy sandals with some diamante bling on themwhich makes them quite dressy ( they're everywhere in Spain at the moment) or what about a pair of flats dressed up with some stick on jewels or fancy clip ear rings to decorate (i've done this on sandals before). Misskitty72 Posted August 9, 2015 #23 Share Posted August 9, 2015 my friend is in to ballroom dancing and suggested I try a pair of dance shoes since I can't walk in heels to save my life. :p These aren't the sexiest shoes you'll ever own, but they might do the trick for formal night. (They look much better on than in the picture) http://www.amazon.com/EKF108-Very-Fine-Ladies-Ballroom/dp/B010UO3XO0/ref=pd_rhf_gw_p_img_3?ie=UTF8&refRID=05CPW6CPZW5TX4R44HMJ There are also some styles that look more like kitten heels and are pretty comfortable. http://www.amazon.com/Bloch-Womens-Yvette-Ballroom-Shoe/dp/B0041IXPPE/ref=sr_1_1?s=apparel&ie=UTF8&qid=1439110143&sr=1-1&keywords=ballroom+dance+shoes
t60 Posted August 9, 2015 #24 Share Posted August 9, 2015 Dance shoes are a good suggestion as most of them have suede soles which stop you slipping, but they won't be any good to wear out on pavements. If you use ebay and search under latin and ballroom dance shoes you'll have a huge selection. You need to watch the sizing if they are made in China tho and probably go up a size, but a lot of the sellers show you how to measure your feet. The prices are very reasonable I bought a new pair for my dance class last week for £9 including postage ie about 14$ and they ship all over the world. Dance shoes are very lightweight and flexible Sandy in Spain
kdeans1010 Posted August 10, 2015 #25 Share Posted August 10, 2015 My sister busted her foot in a dozen plus places (12+ bones, 12+ places, 7 screws), before she was addicted to heels (higher the heel closer to God.). Since then we have (as a family) been on the hunt for cute flats. Toms has cute lacy flats (super comfy) or glitter flats. Clarks always has great shoes (I found a great pair of 1 inch all over platforms that ferl like a flat. Wore them all day for my sister's wedding. Literally from 0700 until after midnight ). Birkenstocks have super cute metallic cute out sandals I wear to dressy occasions. Sent from my SM-T217S using Tapatalk
