Keeping belongings safe

Recommended Posts

Was doing a little Amazon shopping while also same planning for our cruise in Feb, and this item popped up in recommended items:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005K6JQXQ/ref=nav_timeline_asin?ie=UTF8&psc=1

In case that doesn't show up, its a Master Lock 5900D Portable Safe. Looks big enough for a couple of phones, wallet, keys, etc. And it has a built-in locking cable so you can chain it to a beach chair, railing, or similar.

My questions are:

1. Has anyone used this or similar to lock up wallet, room key, phone while on the ship? Any feedback?

2. Does Royal Caribbean have any rules against using something like this on the pool or sports deck, or has anyone ever been asked to remove it?

3. What do you think, good to have, or a waste of money? As safe as I feel while on the ships, I always feel like I'm tempting fate leaving my phone, wallet and room key just hidden in my towel while swimming.

Thanks all, and Happy Cruising!

Why not leave your phone and wallet in the safe in your stateroom?

there is a safe in the stateroom, why would I want to buy and pack another one?

and why would you need your wallet while out and about on the ship? All your purchases (besides the casino) can be made on your card....

Wallet: I always have a mini-wallet that I use for travel that in this case would have ID, room key, and a little cash for tips and such.

Even if I decide to leave the wallet in the room, I still need a room key and am likely to bring my phone (which doubles as an e-book and camera on vacation).

And, of course, I think the biggest reason why I'd consider this would be for shore excursions. May not always have something to lock it to, but would still feel better having that stuff (plus the necessary passport) locked up.

Where are you cruising? When we went on the Oasis in 2013, I don't ever recall needing to take my passport off ship. You only need it for the initial boarding, the rest of the time keep it locked in the room safe.

I think a portable safe like that is just something else you are taking the risk on losing. If you're on the ship, anything you don't have with you can stay in the safe (wide enough for a 10" tablet to fit in).

We use an aquapac, fits a cell phone, our ids, some cash and a credit card.

Many different sizes, can be found in sporting good stores or Amazon.

Ours is similar to this:

wouldn't lug that thing along. Just an invitation that stands out

(here I am, all expensive stuff here)

instead of a beach bag that looks like the thousands of others

What are you planning on locking it to that isn't movable?

I use a KYSS bag, which has a chain and lock to secure the bag to something. I have used in on board ship - mostly for those times when I go to the restroom, into the pool, etc. I have my ship card and e reader with me on deck usually, and want it to be there when I get back.

I also use it when on the beach. While I realize that someone could cut through the bag if they were determined, my bag is not the quick grab and run one and hopefully not the 1st pick for a thief.

We too only carry our seapass when onboard the ship, but when getting off need a little more. I have not used these myself but this another option, and a little easier to carry around than the safe above, that has gotten great reviews. If you are carrying a bag anyway . . .

Looks like Rob&Bonnie posted at the same time as I did. BTW, this is just another reason for not carrying a phone or walkie talkie or something else similar around with you onboard. I usually buy a paperback for cruises so one less thing to carry to the pool deck and worry about. The ereader is for the cabin/balcony and if I want pics that's a special trip where I wouldn't be setting the phone/camera down anyways.

Alright folks, I get that there is a safe in the room and you don't need much stuff most of the time. That's not really helpful information.

Part of my thought process was that each of our shore excursions will require a change of clothes, so we will probably take a normal bag with clothes, towel, water, etc. Something like this would go in there and valuables could go inside. If the excursion required us to be away from our bag (swimming, for instance), I could lock the bag whole bag to something or at least have the valuables locked away in the bag to make it harder for someone to just pocket the phone or wallet.

Passports: We have passport cards and full passports. Full passports go in the room safe, cards go in the wallet. I know that you don't always have to have them while ashore, but what happens if you miss the boat? I make sure I have an official ID and a CC with me for that reason.

On the boat: Phone or camera is with me almost the whole time, and if I'm swimming, it can't go in my pocket. And I've had my seapass come out of my pocket while swimming. Like I said, in past cruises, I've just slid them between the towel on our beach chair and crossed my fingers.

i use a KYSS bag to. there are several sizes and it is so handy for more than just the little stuff.

it won't stop someone from cutting through it if the really wanted to, thats correct, but its a deterrent. who would take the time though.

i love my bag.

If someone wants to steal your bag, they are going to even if it is chained to something. If we lose our clothes and towels, we don't care. With the Aquapac I linked above, we have everything that we need to reboard the ship on us. My DH either wears it around his neck or down his leg, under his swim trunks. We have an underwater camera we take to the beach, DSLR stays on the ship if we are going to be in the water.

Do what works for you.

I personally think the problem with this is that all valuables are in one place and it wouldn't be too hard for someone to just take the entire thing and then you've lost everything that was most valuable to you.

That just makes it easier for the thief. Like one stop shopping. Just walks away with the safe.

Do people really still call cruise ships "boats"?

Kyss bag users:

What size did you get? I've always wanted one and I am seriously considering getting one for our next vacation...

Lordy..if you're that afraid of your "stuff" being stolen...stay home and guard your belongings!

We put our stuff in the safe in the cabin...it's safe there...that's why they call it a "safe".

Ashore, we only bring what we need...and we've yet to be bludgeoned and robbed...we keep our eyes open and pay attention to our surroundings, but I'.ve never felt the need to have armed guards surrounding us.

I have the medium bag. It's big enough for what we carry to the beach (towels, sunscreen, kindle), without being too big and bulky.

Someone will retrieve your passport from your room safe and leave it with the ship's agent in port.

If you feel a need to bring all of your "stuff", stay home and live in a cave!

1. I have never used such a thing.

2. I have never seen such a thing, therefore I have no idea if RC cares.

3. Waste of money.
