Cuba, is Royal Caribbean learning from Carnival mistake?

Recommended Posts

Okay. I'm not a corporate lawyer or any kind of corporate law expert. No doubt they are incorporated in Panama to avoid taxes, regulations, or both. Even so, the general public perceives Carnival as American. It is a moot point now since Carnival changed its policy. They either realized that the policy was at best unfair and a public relations nightmare. They will now allow Cuban born passengers to book. What happens when they get to Cuba is anyone's guess.

No, what Carnival is saying is that Cuban born US citizens may book the cruise (note that no mention is made of allowing or not allowing Cuban born citizens of other nations), but that the cruises won't happen until the Cuban law/policy is changed. So, the Cuban born US citizens still cannot travel to Cuba by sea, but now, no one can on Carnival (fathom).

Not exactly the same circumstances but maybe there are other consequences that may have Carnival concerned.

Quite a bit different, in that the airline was not selling transportation to Kuwait, where their law exists, but to a third country, the UK, where there are no restrictions on Israeli travel.

Good. This is as it should be, IMHO. Maybe Cuba will change the policy, maybe not. Time will tell. I believe Carnival jumped the gun on this one.

Fidel Castro himself had attended a "meeting" yesterday and although he did not address this subject, he stated that Communism would continue in Cuba.

I saw a video of him on the news.

Thank you. My mom and aunt are like you. Learned Spanish first, from Miami...

I am second generation but very very proud of the sacrifices my grandparents and great grandparents made to give me the life I have.

Are you serious? You can't be serious....

Sure the US had issues in the past like slavery, etc., but in Cuba it is AN ONGOING ISSUE. You can't hold people who currently run a country accountable for things that happened 100-200 years ago. But you certainly can hold them accountable for what is going on right now. And in Cuba, its going on right now.

Did the US government keep you as a prisoner of war for 20 months? Beat you to near death for praying the rosary? Did you continue to pray the rosary despite the daily beatings? Did you spend those 20 months in a 4'x4' cage? Were you a 6 foot 2 man who weighed 90 pounds when he was finally freed?

All of those thing happened to my grandfather when he was captured as a prisoner of war shortly after the US botched the bay of pigs invasion and backed out on the Cuban Ex-Pats who went in to fight Castro. The people who are STILL IN CHARGE were the ones doing this. And have been for 60 years.

Yes its an issue with this communist dictatorship. Sure theres other places out there that are corrupt. I don't travel to China, and I don't travel to Russia, because I have no desire and thats not my point anyways.

But I hope you understand why some of us don't want to go.

If you want to go, please do! Cuba is beautiful and I hope one day the Castros are gone and I can visit and learn about more of my family history. But to give my money now to the men who nearly killed my grandfather every day for 20 months? No thanks. My grandfather would turn over in his grave and I have way too much respect and sheer admiration for the things he did for his Country.

Like I said I don't judge you for going. Cuba is beautiful. But don't judge some of us for not going.

That was an awesome posting. Your grandfather has a great grandchild.

Yeah, nice try. I lived in South Florida for years. If you're a child of Cuban immigrants, born & raised in Miami, then you've been carefully fed the best propaganda since your momma weaned you. Your biased and your view is horribly corrupted.

Wow, what propaganda have you been raised on? O, let me guess... Super smart socialists like those who feel the Bern....

Seriously, stop while you are behind.

Give me a break. South Florida Cuban Americans are incapable of reason on this topic. These are the same nitwits that actually protested against Elian Gonzalez being returned to his father when his mother drowned. Fanatical nitwits....

The consequences of one's actions determines one's future. Carnival is beginning to comprehend this about right now. The ignorance and greed in their rush to profit blinded them temporarily. It appears that someone at Carnival has made a decision to have a 'slow down, take a deep breath, and properly think this through' moment.

So do you agree with those who wouldn't sail an itinerary to Cuba for political reasons? If so, how do you feel about China?

I don't have the time, nor money to travel the world. As such, I do think twice about where I wish to give my money for travel adventures. There are too many places in the world left for me to explore to concern myself with communist countries.

If a Cuban/American sneaks on a ship to Cuba, can they use the bathroom marked Cubans Only?

Only if they are NOT within the 12 mile limit of the North Carolina coast. If they are within that limit, they would need to show that their 'naughty bits' match the gender on their original birth certificate before being allowed to use a bathroom. :o

I will never visit Cuba until the Castro Brothers Murderous Dictatorship ends with a fair election for the Cuban People! The embargo also should never be lifted until there gone!

FWIW, wasn't Batista a murderous dictator.

Yes, he was. But Cuba traded one bad guy for a REALLY BAD guy. This has happened many times in political history. Batista looks like a cupcake next to Fidel.

Yes, it is the end of the world as we know it. People are so smart these days. They can allow 60 year old men to gender identify so they can go to the bathroom with 12 year old girls, and they can think that murderous communists are just like the US presidents. You know that crazy right wing bush that tried to protect us from guys who fly planes into buildings. What was he thinking.

We don't deserve buildings we are no better than the other savages.

There is no right there is no wrong, it is all what we feel. We are so stupidly politically correct that we see a horrible action and we really can't have an opinion about the person doing something that we know is wrong and we would, personally, never do.

People who chop people's heads off because they won't deny their religion are going to eat our lunch. Stupid....

This post I read the other day gave me a lot of food for thought about my desire to go to Cuba.

I posted that article on another thread. Great read. Most people are very well-meaning, but they just don't "get" how bad things really are in Cuba.

Thank you for posting this. I think most people are good people and mean well. While others are intellectual people that are truly ignorant to Cuba. Yet still there are others that are just too self indulged, greedy and care less of the plight around them.

With this said, I'm thinking about killing my cow then throwing some nice steaks on the grill, because I can.

Great article. Of course, some here will call it hateful right wing propaganda.

They are smarter than the rest of us because we are nitwits or worse.

Because you lived in S Florida for years, you think you know the "the truth ".? You have no idea. I find it hard to believe that you can generalize this way b/c you lived here several years. There are all kinds of Cuban immigrants here, all with very different stories. But they do have a common theme

Some from the 60's, some from the 80's, some recent. Some fought in the revolution, others were captured and jailed, yet others do not know anything but Communism.

The immigrant population, contrary to what you think,, consist of many different opinions. You have no idea what my views or how I came to have them based on a few lines I wrote on a message board.

But, hey, if we ever meet up, I'd enjoy sharing them with you.mee can all learn something from others
