I know many of you have stayed at the Embassy 17th St. - My family and I have stayed there twice in the past pre-and-post-cruise. We love the hotel so of course after I booked our upcoming Feb 5 cruise out of Port Everglades I went to the website to book two nights pre-cruise. Imagine my shock and surprise when the total for one suite/4 people/2 nights came to almost $800.00!!! Whaaaaat??? I think in the past we have paid around $179.00/night. Does anyone know what gives? Is there something going on in town that weekend (Feb 3-5) or have their rates gone up that much? I mean it's a nice hotel but not THAT nice! Any recommendations for another nice hotel close by that offers parking and free breakfast that is a little less pricey? Thanks!!

Past price doesn't really matter...it is what they are charging now.

February is peak time, and as has been discussed here frequently, demand is EXTREMELY high in that window. Plus Princess (and perhaps other cruise lines as well) are using Embassy Suites, shrinking the availability. It is an issue of supply and demand.

Check on valuetrips.com for the Hyatt Place Convention Center. Will run under $250 IF not on the list of black out dates. Large rooms and included breakfast. Steps from ES.

Not surprised for your time frame....We always also enjoy the ES but for our March cruise we've opted to book with http://www.valuetrips.com the Hyatt Place...which sits just behind ES.

Unfortunately, those days of $75-150 rooms are all but a faint memory for the winter and spring months in Fort Lauderdale

For the past 3-4 years we've encountered $300 average prices for 3 star hotels. There are so many ships departing out of there now which hold many thousands more than ships a decade ago, for example, so the hotels are always at nearly full capacity these days. A couple years ago we got a rock bottom rate on a cruise last minute as well as a great airfare so we booked it. Well, we weren't so lucky with the hotels since it was March and had to pay $678 for two nights at a Hyatt Place

One of the things I've noticed, and Ft. Lauderdale residents can correct me if I'm wrong, is that the number of hotels in Ft. Lauderdale hasn't changed over the past few years, yet the number of cruisers has gone up - more ships and bigger ships.

Actually several new properties have opened up over the past few years. Unfortunately, they are mostly luxury properties. The problem is the closer you are to the port, the more you will pay for a room. Several new hotels have opened in the Dania Beach and Hollywood area, which is south of the port. There are also several hotels near I 95 and Sterling Road that include breakfast, have shuttles to the port and are near shopping and restaurants. Check sunny.org, that's the Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention and Visitor's Bureau website. They are a great source for hotels at different price points. Good luck.

Another vote for the Hyatt Place Convention Center as a possible alternative. Also, if you have Hyatt points or are a member of the credit card point program (such as Chase Ultimate Rewards), you might check out the option of booking with points. Last time I was there (within last year) it was 8000 points per night.

Book something that you can live with that is cancellable. Then keep shopping. I have a feeling that some rooms will open closer to the date. I have heard from a travel agent here, that with the zika scare, she had 4 couples cancel their trips for next winter already. Just never know.

Ditto this. I already have my next 2 trips booked using points. Great deal IMO.

We looked into the Embassy Suites for a 2 night pre-cruise for the end of April and it was also over $400! We are probably going to book the Hilton Fort Lauderdale Marina for half that price!

Thanks for all the great input and suggestions. I checked out valuetrips.com and it shows a value rate at the Hyatt for $219.00/night for our time frame but it says "Reservations are temporarily unavailable, but will return as soon as possible. We apologize for any inconvenience." so I can't check our exact dates right now but will keep trying and will definitely book if we can get that rate! If not I will contine looking at some of the other areas suggested. :D

There have been several hotel openings in Ft. Lauderdale, Dania, and Hollywood in the last few years. At the same time, the airport Hilton closed and they had a lot of rooms! Here are some brand new builds along with total renovations of old hotels/motels that had been closed down.

Thanks for that info, Royalcruz. My first choice is always ES, but sometimes I've had to stay elsewhere if there was a big meeting or convention or other event going on in Ft. Lauderdale. So far I've not had a bad hotel. It's good to know something about other properties.

Yes, we've got more hotels than we had and three more have broken ground downtown.

One of the big things is that Europeans come over here in the winter and spend two weeks to a month at a time in hotels.

Check out La Quinta, Hollywood. It looks like they have rooms available for under $200.00. We've stayed there several times. They have a free shuttle from the airport and a shuttle to the port for a small fee. They also offer a free breakfast.

Good luck!

Thanks Royalcruz for this info. I will be flying into to FL in Dec. 2016 for one night for cruise out of Miami. Which hotel or hotels would you suggest for solo female in the Dania/Hollywood area? I would like the free airport shuttle and breakfast and good place to eat close by within walking distance.

Also, looking at shuttles. Used SAS in past. Do you recommend them or someone else?

Thanks so much for your help.

I also have prebooked (for Jan.). On my last trip out of Ft. Lauderdale I prebooked months in advance, but checked back at least once a month and was able to rebook for $50 less per night (I am a Hilton Member. If you do this, just be sure to book the new price before cancelling the original booking.)

Keep checking back. Last time I booked them way ahead of time I continued checking the Hilton site at least once a month. Was able to book for $59 less. Just be sure if you do, you book the new price before cancelling your original reservation. (Do this all the time for rental cars too).
