Hi just booked the Silouette for a 12 day cruise, my husband and I are middle age and really enjoy a lively atmosphere on our cruises. We have cruised Norwegian and Carnival and found them to be a lot of fun😊 (We enjoy good parties ,) Will the Silhouette keep my dancing feet going and us very entertained compared to our previous cruises ?

Silhouette will provide dancing every night both in the Foyer at the foot of the Grand Stairs and at the Sky Lounge. They also have dancing in Qasar disco. The number of other party types will depend on both destination and the length of the cruise. Caribbean are much more active than re-positioning and Alaska cruises. The shorter the cruise the younger the passenger mix appear to be.

Even on a 15 day TA I saw many people dancing and partying nightly.

They also have the Silent Disco that I heard was very popular (we had intended to make it there but never did)...it's where folks have headphones with your choice of music playing and everyone is dancing to their own beat. Supposed to be super fun.

Celebrity can not be compared to NCL and even less to Carnival... which is exactly the reason why most of us book Celebrity.

While you might find party and action on a few spots around the ship the general atmosphere is more laid back and a bit more luxurious. I was envited on the first three day sailing of NCL Escape and liked some of the design of the ship because it was similar to the modern style of a Solstice class but would never do a cruise on her. The things I did not like are probably the things you are looking for... party, action, Margaritaville, loud entertainment on deck etc. etc. Everything I am trying to get away from on vacation... it was there 24/7.

So if that is what you are looking for you most likely will not like X.

Caribbean cruises are a bit more lively in general - even on Celebrity. However, they will never be like Carnival cruises. Thank god for us, maybe not as good for you.

That's too great - sorry man, but HOW do you base your knowledge after having just sailed RCCL and X, and just one 2-nighter for travel agents on NCL Escape you did not pay at all??

Such "experiences" are not representative, and you have never sailed Carnival...

And it's really expert to judge the whole NCL fleet from just two nights on NCL Escape!

To the point: When we have been on NCL Jade this April 2016, we found service and food (free venues!) 99.9% to be comparable with Celebrity, service even better.

During the days at sea we got some fruit sticks and water ice for free, we never got served on any Celebrity sailing.

Furthermore we had a small coffee machine on our stateroom, we did not have with Celebrity.

I have not been sailing on Carnival as well, but I have browsed the recent main dining room menus of some 2016 cruises and the menus just look tempting, there are dishes for free you'd look for on Celebrity without success (oysters, mussels or rabbit, for example).

So just be careful, do some research on other lines and inform before judging them without having been on one of them!

Having a good time is up to each individual. A Caribbean cruise will give you a good mix of passengers. One never knows just what age groups will be on board. Celebrity is not NCL nor Carnival and I have been on both. It is definitely a step up. I was just on Silhouette but the average age was 75+ for the 15 night TA. The guy who thought he could dance in the atrium definitely needed lessons or someone to assist him. It looked like he was having a great time each evening with his spouse! Go with an open mind, find other like age cruisers on your roll call and enjoy every minute of your vacation. After all, you are on a cruise!

I haven't sailed NCL but have sailed on Carnival quite a few times. There is IMHO a significant difference in atmosphere between the two cruise lines. Carnival is more of a young party atmosphere where Celebrity is has a quieter more laid back atmosphere. To give you an idea of the difference here is one example.

Sea day at the pool on Carnival there is often a hairy man contest or a belly flop contest.

Sea day on Celebrity there is often a officers vs guest pool volley ball game.

There isn't Comedy Club or Piano bar on any Celebrity ship, which we miss.

We prefer Celebrity and probably won't be back on Carnival as we enjoy the more relaxed adult atmosphere.

Really???? By boring do you mean upscale, refined, suite class, Michael's Club and butler, to mention a few boring things...then yes, it is very boring on Celebrity! Yes, I sailed NCL when I was younger and it was okay for me at that point in my life...I respect your opinion and hope you respect mine! Thank goodness everyone doesn't love Celebrity because the prices would skyrocket!

Happy Sailing! I just couldn't resist[emoji12]

For the OP ---- I have sailed several times on NCL, and you will find it a lot different from Celebrity. NCL is lively, energetic, entertaining with basically no dress code and lots going on, all the time. Celebrity is quieter, more sedate and elegant. There is certainly music in many places and some dancing going on, but it's not by any means a party atmosphere. It's really more about enjoying the ambiance and good conversation with your traveling companions or new friends. Dress code is followed by most everyone, there aren't anymore formal nights but cruisers generally dress up a little for dinner. No shorts in the evening restaurants except for the buffet. Anyway, we enjoy both Celebrity and NCL and try to appreciate the strengths of each when sailing with them, but please don't expect a party atmosphere or you will likely be disappointed.

Well said...you saved me the trouble... there will be lively events and dancing but generally not a big party ship...closest to it was our Reflection cruise out of Miami...loud Miami DJs all over it...lots if drinkers...not what we expected or enjoyed...

Silhouette is a great ship....Celebrity style. I think OP will enjoy it.

We missed you on most of the T/A on Sillie..because I know that your were quite ill and not able to leave your cabin!!!! Our loss...but I have to disagree re your idea that most of us were 75+...that was really not the case at all..some were...but most were not! I didn't see the gentleman you described in the atrium...but more power to him...TBH...I think most of the CCers I met from the R/C were in there mid to late 60's and early 70's...young at heart I think...don't you??? But you are right...the T/As tend to attract an "older crowd"!!!...but "young at heart!!! LuAnn

Oh dear I think I need to apologize a bit and maybe should have explained our interests better . I iwas not trying to compare Carnival and NCL overall! We've only been on 4 cruises so I am in no position to even think about doing that . What I should have stated is that we love to be busy in the evenings I will spend all day lounging on all the sea days on the pool deck and I usually don't pay attention to what is going on around me, but I am certainly not ready to head to bed at 11 pm either as I am on vacation. My concern was I showed my husband a couple of online videos of Celebrity and his first response was " Everyone looks old", whereas my response was that looks really nice !

When I began to look for a cruise for our 25th Anniversary, this particular itinerary really appealed to us both and I can't seem to find a similar itinerary that will include booze so here I am, trying to get some helpful insight into the world of "X" as you all refer to it and I do certainly appreciate your opinions 😊

Longer cruises attract older people because they're the ones who have the time to take 12 days off for a cruise. While I get enough vacation a year to take longer ones, I can only be off for a maximum of 10 days in a row, and I know that's the case with a lot of my friends as well (or they have kids; we're in our 30s-40s).

All of my experience is with 7 day cruises. On those, I've found the daytime sea days to be pretty quiet (not a lot of organized activities) unless you're around the pool. But there are so many port days on this itinerary, that wouldn't bother me personally. The port days are even quieter because most people leave the ship.

Evenings are usually centered around dining, the shows, the casino, and the bars. There's a buzz but it's usually an elegant buzz. Not dead but not too wild, either.

How lively it is after 11pm will depend on passenger mix. I'd suspect that the nights before port days will be pretty dead after the last show finishes as people will want to go to sleep and be rested for the day in port. You'll likely find more night-owls on the sea days. I've always found a small group of diehards at one bar or another.

I sail Celebrity because I like the nice atmosphere and I can talk to anyone old or young and I cruise for rest and relaxation (many times I don't get off the ship in port).

Oh my... the mighty Max is back :) Almost missed you!

Your posts are always refreshing and somewhat amusing contributions to an exchange of information which might otherwise become too focused and constructive.

As are your attemps to get to me by pointless arguments.

I suggest you read the OPs question again. It was about parties, dancing and lively atmosphere compared to their previous cruises.

I fail to see where fruit sticks, coffee makers and dining menus have any relevance to the actual question. The lack of relevance also applies to the fact that I did not pay for my NCL cruise as I even mentioned in my statement or if I cruised on Carnival before.

Although you should know better since you study in a tourism related field I will give you a hint... the magic words are "target audience".

The question was about party, lively atmophere and in a later post the motivation that booze was included was also mentioned. Without the slightest evaluation of the desire for party, dancing or booze (which can no daubt be a fun combination) I have to acknowledge that these are of lesser priority on a Celebrity ship compared to a Carnival or NCL cruise. Cruise lines which attract customers by using exactly these kinds of events. Ships with water parks, rope gardens, Margaritaville venues etc. etc. just have more of a party atmosphere than Celebrity ships. A fact which vise versa most loyal Celebrity cruisers value. However, if one is looking for exactly that kind of atmosphere one might be disappointed on Celebrity. That was the simple answer to the OP´s simple question, Max. It is actually no rocket science.

Maybe you can come to terms with the fact that different individuals have different preferences. That´s the reason why different cruise lines cater different target audiences ;)

Without saying one is better than the other I would never recommend Celebrity Cruises to someone with a high priority on party as much as I would never recommend a Carnival ship to someone looking for laid back, quiet luxury. It is as simple as that...

Oh and just in case you keep telling me that I have not cruised on Carnival let me respond that I do not have to visit an Iron Maiden concert to know I prefer classical music

Anyway, to get back to the subject... Silhouette is our favourite ship and we loved sailing on her. Regardless of my concerns if it is the right product for them I sincerely hope the OP will have a fun cruise and come back happy.

Yeah, and the king of knowledge named Oli is back as well - I also missed your precocious comments which do not allow other opinions, especially when it comes to your beloved RCCL/X... ;)

Different cruise lines target different audiences? WOW, you don't say!

As an experienced cruiser, the king of knowledge like YOU one should know, many cruise lines hugely differ via marketing - and although there's tendencies, the major cruiselines attract a BROAD spectrum of audiences and different age classes having different opinions - it's as simple as that, man.

And you do not need to tell me anything about it, since I am familiar with cruising since 11 years, having read a lot of different literature and interrogating it... ;)

In addition there are 17 cruises I've done so far, on different cruise lines and I know how to classify what... ;)

You know what? I have read the OP's post, I know she asked about the shipboard's atmosphere such as parties and lively atmosphere - but I wasn't referring to it, but to your post judging cruise lines you have not been on, but telling how you compare them to each other!

Between ourselves - extend your horizon to other cruise lines and sail them before judiging them by such theoretical facts.

I also could not imagine some things before, until I tried it by myself, and every new experience widenes your eyes.

Or: you book yours, others book theirs - but it won't help anyone telling something about cruise lines one just knows theoretically. That's what I just needed to say. Simple.

If I remember correct that should be what... about half your lifetime? I am sure most of the seasoned cruisers here admire you deeply!

If you would "interrogate" the posts here only half as much as you claim to interrogate literature about cruising you should see that neither I nor anybody else here was judging other cruise lines but merely giving a statement about what to expect... in other words: Answering the OP´s question!

Your statement is full of contradiction about what I do or not do, about what not to do in general but you do... oh boy, it is almost confusing.

Do me and others a favour. For the sake of an otherwise helpful thread.. let it go! I will

[...] but merely giving a statement about what to expect... in other words: Answering the OP´s question!

Actually I don't have the time to circle around without any goal...

What I finally intended to tell: The cruise lines are NOT the first determinant about the audience found on a particular cruise - season, region, and cruise length are far more representing it.

You referred to all the features of NCL Escape (Margarittaville, water slides, what so ever) which AUTOMATICALLY should attract younger and/or youthful pax - if so, on every cruise, no matter if it's Transatlantic, Baltic, Med, whatever, a NCL Getaway or Escape should attract younger people than a Celebrity Silhouette, for exapmle?!

That's simply not true. I can tell you on a Transatlantic or Baltic for example, you are generally likely to have (slightly) older crowds seeking for a laid-back atmosphere than on a Med cruise in Aug, for example.

Ships like NCL Escape rather have a resort/party feeling, but that does not necessarily determine the target groups...

Thank you for emphasizing my point!

BTW: where did you read a word about age on board in my statement??? Target audience and age groups are not the same.

Just as confusing as the rest... almost obsessed

Well, please don´t - don´t let us keep you... au revoir!

My wife and I agree with your post as we too split our time between X and NCL although we lean toward X by about 2 to 1. We typically sail 3 times per year and would challenge the folks that said the Silli T/A average age was 75. We were on the cruise out of Rome right before the T/A and it seemed that the majority of the people were staying aboard for the T/A (we did not). The average age of those cruisers was definitely not 75 years as stated above!!

I hope some of these posts are wrong . . . we tried Celebrity a few years ago and missed the live music by the pool and the contests . . . . so we stay with RCCl for the last 6 or 7 cruises . . . we are getting sick of the kids running wild on RCCL and so are back on Celebrity at the end of January . . . .We'll see.

There is live music by the pool but not many contests - on purpose. Most people are there to relax and don't need to be entertained. Don't take it wrong, heck I like Carnival, NCL, any cruise is good but Celebrity is way more laid back, again, on purpose.

You'll have fun
