15 Drink Limit

Agree too many conflicting reports and people commenting without really knowing. I personally have not bought the program on Carnival for 2 reasons. Both have to buy the program even if one barely drinks so right there isn't worth it. Two, the 15 drink limit doesn't work when you are cruising with friends. We have friends that cruise with us and we are all about buying drinks for each other. That's what we do. You can't buy for others when you have Cheers. No sharing. If I buy a round not using cheers of say 8 drinks, there goes my limit of 15 a day in one trip to the bar if they still cut me off after my 15 a day. That can't be right. There has to be some sort of reasoning in play on this policy. I have a friend that cruised with us last time and I suggested he not get the cheers program even though he wanted to. He usually orders a beer and a shot of Jim Beam each trip to the bar. He sips on the shot while drinking his beer. On Cheers, you have to space them so he can order a beer then 15 minutes later or so buy the shot. That's stupid. Also, my husband always gets my drink when he gets his. If we both have to order separate and sign for each of our drinks that is stupid too. Just sayin. We did the program once on another cruiseline where we could get different packages. He got the beer & wine package and I got the everything package. We each had to order separate & pay separate which was a pain.

It's not - you can buy drinks outside of the cheers package and they do not count against your 15 cheers drinks per day BUT you have to buy them before you get to your 15th cheers drink for that day. Once you hit 15 on Cheers you are done buying anything.

The limit between drinks is only 5 minutes. Still stupid but not as stupid as 15 minutes.

You can both go to the bar OR I've read here that one of you can take both S&S cards to the bar - they'll usually let you get 2 drinks with 2 cards.

I was cut off on Halloween night at 15 drinks. I was annoyed at the time but thankful the next morning! Lol

  • 1 year later...

This has nothing to do with Carnival trying to keep passengers "safe" and more with keeping their profits "safe". If that were the case, why does practically every other cruise line have a truly unlimited beverage plan but Carnival? And if they were worried about people overindulging, how come you don't get cut off after 15 drinks if you DON'T have the cheers package? Don't get suckered into thinking this is a way for them to control overindulging. Its not. Its a way for them to control losing money. I think its ridiculous they have a limit anyway when every other cruise line doesn't.

And they know their demographic better than anyone else and are in the best position to price their product. 15 a day probably represents the tipping point between profit and loss. The other thing to keep in mind is the product is offered to make the company money, it's not offered to save the customer money (although it is certainly marketed that way and for many it does work that way).

Princess - another CCL brand also has a 15 drink limit on their beverage plan but they will allow you to buy more as long as the bartender or bar manager deems you not too drunk to continue.

Yeah they are terrible. Somewhat jaded view?? For the sake of discussion, which cruise line does not want to control costs? There is something ridiculous in your post but me thinks you missed it. If you think it is bad, the grass is greener elsewhere

I sailed the Ruby Princess, Christmas cruise 2016. Unless it has changed since then, this statement is very untrue. My wife hit 15 drinks one of the nights, and we had the "Premier Beverage Package". In fact, she was quite buzzed...LoL, not only did they serve her over the 15 drinks, but the drinks were very strong, and was NOT charged for #16 on. Now the question is, did she need more? NO, Should she of had more? NO, but heck why not it not every day we are on a cruise. Should they have cut my DW off?, YES but they did not. I believe this was because we tipped them through out the week $1 or $2 every other round or so. Lastly, (before I am roasted by the tipping police) I know tips are included when buying the package and you should not have to tip more to get better service/ drinks, but you do, just saying.

I just read the Princess site for their terms and conditions and it states;

Terms and Conditions

  • Alcoholic drinks are limited to 15 beverages per 24-hour period (6 a.m. to 6 a.m.). Alcoholic drinks requested above the daily limits are at the discretion of the shipboard management and crew and charged at regular menu prices.

So it appears it has changed, sorry for calling you out memoak:o.

The Limit of 15 drinks a day on Princess came into being when they changed the AIBP (unlimited) plan to the PBP (15 limit) plan, in 2016 the AIBP was in affect and there were in fact no limits. If I am not mistaken the 15 drink limit happened in September of 2017

I still don't know how so many people can hit 15 a day. When I go out, I love to drink. On the boat, I thought I would be the same. After all of the food, sun, and fun, 10 would have me feeling like hot garbage.

Everybody is different as is every body. I could do it one day out of the cruise but not the other 6. Fortunately one needn't come anywhere near 15 to justify the cost.

I'm sure if you search this site you will see that the 15 drink/day limit applies to everyone. It has been reported that if someone has the DOU card in the casino, even those free drinks count towards the 15 drink limit.

Personally, I am a fan of the limit. Even in my younger days, when I could party hard with the rest of them, I don't think I ever drank more than 15 drinks a day (even at all-inclusives). To consume more alcohol than that in a day just seems to be dangerous and unsafe.

Totally agree. I think if I even tried to drink that much, I’d be comatose! Personally, I like to remember my cruises! I think it’s totally reasonable to cut someone off at 15 drinks, if not before if totally intoxicated. THOSE are the people that are always falling off the ship!

I have only hit the limit a few times but it is possible to do without getting blotto. Remember this is for a 24 hour time period. If you have 2 mimosas with breakfast and 2 glasses of wine with lunch. Then maybe 1-2 out by the pool, 2-3 drinks before dinner, 2 glasses of wine with dinner. At this point you are already at around 10 drinks over a 12 hour time period and you have not hit a show, nightclub or casino yet. Easy to have 3-4 after dinner and before 2 am.

You're probably correct for the most part, but there are exceptions(Me). On sea days, I can sit by the pool and drink 10-12 beers before 4pm and be completely fine.(I'm also 280 lbs) Then if I want a couple glasses of wine at dinner, I'm nearly at my limit. Kind of sucks for me, but I've learned to pace myself on cruises. I still have a blast, and I'm more of a day drinker than night drinker, because I like waking up early on the ships and working out and it's tough to do that with a hangover.

After reading this, it sounds like Carnival is a party boat? If you have such a rule, then it was created because of a widespread problem. Let's keep bragging how many drinks you can have! Makes Carnival look good!

Irrelevant, the same limit applies to all CCL lines' drink packages.

That includes HAL, for example:D;p, are their's "party boats" ;p;)

When we sailed on HAL, we had a package that included two bottles of booze. We did not want them and tried to give them away. We could not find anyone that wanted them.

Let's see: 32 ounces in a quart. 15 drink limit will have a minimum of 15 ounces of booze, more likely 22.5 ounces if the jigger or shot glass is a 1 and a half ounce pour. Heavy pour bartenders will put 2 ounces of booze in a drink for a days total of 30 ounces, and long island iced teas will have even more.

So anyone reaching their 15 drink max intake will have imbibed from a half quart to a full quart of booze each day. Well, bless your liver!

I think there are some people who can hit 15 a day most days, but I suspect many who hit 15 either: do it only once, don't finish their drinks, share drinks, or some combination. How many threads have the comment of a plus for Cheers is ordering new things just to see if you like it (then getting something else 5 min later because they didn't) or not finishing watered down drinks? Even excluding sharing, a person could easily only "consume" 6 or 7 drinks if they are trying everything on the menu or discarding as soon as it starts to melt.

I also don't think most people that do hit 15 hit it every day.
