MizDemeanor Posted December 10, 2016 #4 Share Posted December 10, 2016 Our most recent sail was on RCCL in October...after checking in while in the terminal, afyer the boarding photo op, and before the escalator up to the ship gangway there was a huge kiosk of lanyards...colorful, jeweled, and exciting lanyards. We though what a great idea. Others lines like NCL should learn from this... ;)

AryMay Posted December 10, 2016 #13 Share Posted December 10, 2016 A free class in "lanyard making" was held on our Pride of America cruise this past March…and all supplies were provided. The lanyard is nothing fancy, but I used it and will continue to use it on future cruises. Having only done the one NCL cruise I was surprised at all of the craft classes that were offered. Ours was a unique 11-day cruise from San Francisco to Hawaii after a drydock so these classes may not be offered on the shorter 7-day POA cruises. NHL Philly Fan Posted December 10, 2016 #14 Share Posted December 10, 2016 They're not available for free anywhere, right? On board I assume you just buy them in the ship's store? You can get el-cheapos almost anywhere WallyWorld or any craft shop. I usually use one that has RFID protection and keep my CC in it when it is with me. Amazon has several of those such as this one -> http://amzn.to/2gkJua7 Some people like that level of protection some think it is a waste!

don't-use-real-name Posted December 10, 2016 #16 Share Posted December 10, 2016 I use a mechanical key retriever photo below - source look up RETRACTABLE KEY CHAIN on Ebay - some expensive some less so. Fastens at the belt and with about 30 inches of chain leaves a lot of room to have the sail/sign key card available to open a cabin door without losing the card or dropping on the deck also useful when passing the security boarding points when hands are full of other details. In any case whether using string twine whatever to allow enough room for removing from the neck or waist to get into your cabin - purchase something in a gift or duty free shop photo shop pay for a drink or restaurant reservation and the boarding security station. Caution where the attachment hole is punched to allow the card to be used in whatever scanning device is used. Make a BIG mistake and need a new card go to Guest Services and get a replacement. Can't get back on the ship the Security people can direct you for assistance. Best place to have the holes punched is Guest Services where a bad goof can be corrected right on the spot ! Rare mking8288 Posted December 10, 2016 #17 Share Posted December 10, 2016 (edited) Years ago, you can get a free NCL lanyard onboard on day 1 by signing up for a player's card with Casino At Sea ... not anymore. Gift shop onboard also sold a simple lanyard/key card holder, which I've managed to keep and use for over 10 years now (with slots for receipts & loose bills ... tipping, etc.) as pictured below. For safety reasons, we don't wear/hang them on our neck as it's not the breakaway type ... the quick snap apart ones are the only ones worn while at work with the ID badge ;) Just keep ours/mine in the pant's pocket. Not a fan of the newer lanyard sold in the NCL gift shops these days & it's like $7 or $8 minus the nice holder (just a clear plastic holder ... cheap). For that price, you can pickup several at your local Staples, Dollar Store or uniform store for a lot less - basic ones are like $2 or less. mypleasure Posted December 10, 2016 #18 Share Posted December 10, 2016 Got ours on Amazon. Has a holder which you can quickly remove the card from to open doors, give to waiters or pass security getting on/off the ship. Has a retractable thingy between the lanyard and the card holder. A lot of folks asked us about them when we were on Dawn earlier this year. Looked as good as new when we got home so will do us for a few cruises yet. pcur Posted December 10, 2016 #20 Share Posted December 10, 2016 I have a whole "wardrobe" of blingy lanyards in different colors. I get them on ebay. I like to wear a lanyard that matches the colors I'm wearing during the day and in the evening. Get the kind with the lobster claw clasp that can more easily be attached to your card. The key"ring" type are take too long to switch out.

We have the same card holders, purchased many years ago on NCL. I love it, but I don't wear it around my neck either. I have a regular neck lanyard I use now. The old NCL card holder is now home to as many of my cruise cards that will fit in it. :)

LrgPizza Posted December 10, 2016 #23 Share Posted December 10, 2016 I cleaned out a junk drawer a week ago and probably threw away 30 lanyards. If I'd known they were such a hot commodity, I'd have sold them. :D
Chicogirl Posted December 10, 2016 #24 Share Posted December 10, 2016 (edited) I don't like them around my neck, so I get the expandable holder. You can get them just about anywhere. I like amazon the best, more choices. This is just an idea of what they might look like.
