Technical issues on Caribbean Princess

What would be the proper way to describe a reduction in speed from 21 to 19 knots?

2 knots.

A knot is equivalent to 1 nautical mile per hour. As the term already includes per hour in its definition your addition would be akin to a rate of change rather than a speed.

It's pedantic but always good to hear these terms used correctly.

Thanks for explaining the distinction which probably many of us didn't understand the difference.

OK...there are a lot of you who know what you are talking about here....I guess my only question is...is it safe to get on the CB for 34 days in 2019? I don't want to be left out to sea with no water or toilets! I don't care if we miss ports, we just like being on the ship...no laundry, no phones, no making bed, cooking, etc.

I don't think she would be making a voyage of that sort if she were deemed to be of questionable safety...but maybe I trust the cruise line too much. The problem now is only one of speed. It has nothing to do with safety issues. However, that decrease in speed resulted in changes of port.

Toilet issues....all the ships have toilet issues, many caused by stuff that idiots try to flush. Usually these show up within a day of embarkation. Just call downstairs and they'll send the fix it man. And if it doesn't stay fixed, call again.

It kind of makes you dismiss the entire post.

Although VIN Number, PIN Number and NIC card are always amusing.

I'm also not aware that princess uses variable pitch props which could be feathered...

I've looked at some drydock photos, and it appears that most, if not all, Princess ships use fixed pitch propellers. Then, if one propulsion system is completely out, it means you have to let that inactive propeller "free wheel" or spin freely from the water flow created by the ship's motion through the water. This precludes any repairs to the actual propulsion equipment (shaft, bearings, motor) while underway, since it is rotating. It also creates more drag.

  • 2 weeks later...

After being on the Caribbean Princess, the least of its problems is technical. The food was terrible, the Magic To Do production was betond terrible, service in the Sanctuary was absent ..... theres a severe lack of management on that ship. No joke, the hamburger buns on the sports bar buffet was like a rock.

Hello and thanks for your feedback. With all the above mentioned issues; did you have time to report this or fill out comment card? Feedback to the staff at the hamburger joint would have been nice. Let them feel how hard the bun is and then ask why do they serve something like that. Sorry you did not experience the Princess that I have sailed with.

Just off the Caribbean Princess this past Sunday. There was no sign of any propulsion problem; we got to each destination on time...including a three-hour delay leaving Aruba for a medical emergency...we still made it to Ft. Lauderdale on time.

Bucket List is correct regarding entertainment; that is sorely lacking (except for a couple of outstanding comedians). Other than that, everything was great!

Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln -- how was the play?

I agree just finished the same Cruise. Everyone will have a different experience depending on your cruising experience. Yes, the food is not as good as it used to be however if you don’t like it they will immediately change it. The entertainment was certainly very limited only three production shows.

We did not miss any arrival times, this ship can do whatever speed it needs to get to a destination, these problems are old news .

Cruising is about destinations and meeting different people. Enjoy the experience , we did and still made our views clear to the staff.

That is because the itinerary had already been changed (maybe before you booked the cruise?) to allow for the propulsion problem. Compared to the original itinerary there was reduced port time and a switch of one port.

Just off CB. Great cruise. Great crew. No issues at all. The speed issue was a non-issue for our cruise.

We also enjoyed this cruise immensely. There was really no issue with the speed thing. Great service. Good to very good food, especially dining room and crown grill. A really great 14 nights!!!!!

Actually knowing how cruise companies consistently lie, I am quite confident that they would. Read your cruise contract. They could legally board you and spend the week at the dock. More likely they would legally board you and go out however far they need to go so that they can open the casino and spend the week w/o moving.

I am not sure how likely it is but I am sure that the cruise company bean counters have thought of it.

DON

Yes, although LEGALLY possible that is the most improbable thing I've heard. If this were done the line's reputation would be sunk, especially given how much choice we all have. I hope your comment was made for dramatic effect; not to be taken seriously.

It can almost be that due to weather. Look at threads back when super storm Sandy hit the northeast. I remember posts about one Princess ship staying docked in Boston for several days.

We travelled on the partial canal last õvember and received the warning. There was no problem, just a shorted time in some ports. We even had to return to Grand Cayman with a medical emergency which put us 6 hours behind time but arrived in Lauderdal only an hour late. Great cruise with no problem,
