This map of European rivers in their use as waterways I liked so much I wanted to share it :

You can zoom in and get more details, like locks. There is an explanation on the bottom right of the map. Europe is criss-crossed by canals that you can sail on barges (i.e. barge holidays) that are offered by companies, often self-drive. For a more pampered experience CroisiEurope offers such trips on peniches (French - refurbished - barges).

 

It also shows smaller rivers that you can sail with CroisiEurope and some German lesser-known companies for example. The Saar in Germany springs to mind. And yes, one could sail further upstream from Paris on the Seine...
