Majestic Princess 35%?!

i've been on the majestic and while i didn't love it, it was okay.

positives:

*its new and beautiful and the crew are the usual hard-workers.

*excellent dining room food

*yummy noodle bar

*the best pillows i've ever slept on!

*central staircase and outside aisles in the theatre

it lost points for me with:

*many areas turned into gaming rooms

*the beautiful shopping area with stores i can't even afford to window shop in

*limited outdoor promenade deck space

*buffet food. it was practically the same offerings every day. i thought there was too many mixed stew-like dishes and hardly any seafood offerings. (one fish usually. and it was labeled 'grilled fish'. you get to guess what kind i suppose!).

not specific to this ship but a big negative was that there usually wasn't much going on. i don't remember who the entertainment director or cruise director were but new ones will be an improvement.

in general, i don't care for the big ships but if the itinerary and price was right, i'd cruise her again.

She's radically different to all the other Princess ships. Those people who cruise on her and didn't do their homework, ie expected an Americanized ship, probably would have been disappointed.

Also some people are never happy and just like to complain. People are more likely to post negative reviews than postive ones.

We were on her and she is almost identical to the Royal and Regal with the exception of the Hollywood Beach Club and the Vista Lounge having some tables for games. Also, some bars were replaced with as a juice bar and tea bar. The shops were very high end and there was not your usually flea market or garage type sales going on that you usually find on Princess ships.

Lot's of people did not like the fact that the ship was Asian themed so I would say a little racism was a float......

My take on the 35% is this: Some people liked it and some didn't. You can have a great cruise vacation on any ship. I choose to have fun no matter what ship I am on.

Gee, they didn't like that it was Asian themed? The ship is based in Asia. What did they expect? Princess mad it very clear from the beginning that it would be different. Another reason some people could be unhappy, is that on any new ship, there are bugs to be worked out.

I have good friends who've sailed on the Regal who looked forward to an Asian themed cruise. While they enjoyed the Majestic's Dubai to Singapore cruise, they would not sail the Majestic again & it had nothing to do with racism.

They're very objective & have taken other cruises around Asia so they looked forward to the Majestic. For them changes made to venues such as Crooners (La Mer restaurant) & Club 6 (VIP Gaming) and the Vista Lounge (Vista Gaming Lounge) diminished their cruise experience. Like other posts I've read, La Mer the French restaurant was poorly located with a steady stream of passengers walking past the open area & at those prices the menu didn't appeal to them. Replacing Gelato's with more high-end shops was another degradation for their cruise experience. They greatly enjoyed to Asian themed show & the ports.

While they said the ship was okay they have no plans to cruise again on the Majestic but they don't participate on CC including posting reviews. They cruised expecting to have a great cruise but didn't love it enough to sail the Majestic again unless the itinerary & price were great.

Too often reviews that result in such low ratings are unreasonable rants by passengers who didn't research what to expect & then vent their anger. Particularly anything different is more likely to be poorly reviewed which happened to the Royal but the nearly identical Regal received better ratings.

I agree that the CC reviews are primarily from North American & European passengers who are not the core demographic for the Majestic. That skews the ratings & as has been said...take any reviews with a grain of salt!

Astro Flyer, thank you for posting this. I know on Royal Caribbean they do immersed cruises in different parts of the world. They then cater to that clientle in that part of the world. If you happen to book that ship, expect to have the cruise geared toward that part of the world

I wholeheartedly agree!

Passengers who don't research what to expect are too often are very disappointed which is their own fault. That results in one sided rants that are rarely useful for my planning purposes. If I ever decide to sail the Majestic it'll be based on various objective reviews & not merely on a few CC rants.

I'd don't think it's racism, it's just that some people want everything to be just like it is at home, no matter where in the world they travel. They want the food that they are used to, and don't want to try (are scared to try?) local specialities, they expect everyone to speak their language, and so on. One wonders why people like this bother to travel. So if their favourite cruise line changes a few things on one ship, even if they are told about the changes, they still want it exactly the same as all the other ships they've been on.

Vista lounge had gaming tables added near the back but was basically the same as other Vista lounges..... lot's of people really liked the Hollywood Beach Club which is the major change from Royal and Regal....more Royal class ships are being built and we like that class...it appeared the majority of passengers from Rome to Dubai were Australians and Kiwi's.... many of the shows featured entertainers from there too....

Yes, the ship was designed for the Chinese market.

But it will be based in Australia during the China winter months (summer in Australia).

Aussies have been bemoaning the fact that in the past they only had the older Princess ships available to them. It will be interesting to see their opinions on the newest ship in the fleet when it is sailing from Australia.

There used to be a very small and funky restaurant in my home town. Each day they offered a different fish dish. One day a friend asked a waitress how such a small place that was nowhere near the sea could offer so many different fish dishes. The answer she got was, "One fish. Many names." One never knows what type of fish you are really getting in many places.

And no one will know their opinions for about 15 months at the earliest & It'll also be interesting to learn the passenger demographics in OZ/NZ. Will most passengers be fleeing a Chinese winter or will it be Aussies & Kiwis seeking fun in the sun.

Most of the Aus/NZ itineraries are NZ cruises, with one to Tasmania and one to the South Pacific. I think Majestic will be good for the NZ itineraries, with the forward conservatory.

Hard to tell what the demographic will be. I'm only doing the Tasmania cruise and I suspect that will be most Aus/NZers.

We were on Majestic for 2 weeks and thought the entertainment and CD were good, and the buffet excellent and varied.

Never even saw any gaming areas except some mahjong tables at the back of what on other ships is called the Vista Lounge, guess we found enough to do not to go to the casino or wherever.

We would go on Majestic again in a heartbeat. Not Crown P. which we were on just prior though which was really nasty and not enjoyable.

Couldn't pay me to go on Crown again.

i've never been on the crown and i've not heard much good about it. i wonder why that is?

I've enjoyed a combined 2 months on the Crown & have enjoyed every single day & never had any problems...2 people, 2 different experiences. ;p

That's why I don't base my cruise choices solely on CC reviews because if I did I would never take another cruise and would've missed out on many great days on a ship.

Not all Majestic passengers are Cruise Critic members. Not all said CC members post reviews.

As a general rule, people who are dissatisfied for whatever reason are far more likely to voice an opinion than those that are satisfied. Thus the pool of people reviewing is likely to be skewed disproportionately than not.

that's sure true. years ago in the restaurant business we were told if your experience was good, you'll tell one person. people with poor experiences will complain to 10 others.
