azcruzers Posted July 29, 2017 #1 Share Posted July 29, 2017 Have you ever seen sharks when cruising to the Caribbean? I mean from the ship not when diving, snorkeling, or on an excursion. I've seen a pod of dolphins and flying fish. What have you seen?
tyeomans Posted July 29, 2017 #2 Share Posted July 29, 2017 I've never seen anything, but would love to! I've read that there are Orcas in the Gulf and that would be a sight to see! Sent from my SM-G935V using Forums mobile app
SkyPiglet Posted July 29, 2017 #3 Share Posted July 29, 2017 I haven't seen too much exciting from the ship. I think I saw a whale spout, but that is it. My wife saw a turtle or something come to the surface and then re-submerge. Hoping to see more though eventually. I am cruising out of Galveston in a few weeks. I have heard a rumor that dolphins are a common site there, is there any truth to that?
Drazil65 Posted July 29, 2017 #4 Share Posted July 29, 2017 Dolphins, flying fish, sea turtles mostly, one nice thing about having a balcony is catching a glimpse of sea life once in while not actually looking for it.
Micahs Grandad Posted July 29, 2017 #5 Share Posted July 29, 2017 Dolphins and flying fish is about all we have ever seen
nchikk Posted July 29, 2017 #6 Share Posted July 29, 2017 Once...a small one, while on a snorkeling excursion off Belize. But it was a smaller one, and most likely one that doesn't consider humans to be lunch. It swam about 15 feet below me and kept on its merry way. Athankfulheart Posted July 29, 2017 #7 Share Posted July 29, 2017 If you are watching for them, you almost always see dolphins in the channel in Galveston. We watch from one of the fwd decks. Sent from my SM-N920V using Forums mobile app

NLH Arizona Posted July 29, 2017 #11 Share Posted July 29, 2017 Still haven't seen a shark, but have seen whales, dolphins, flying fish and huge jellyfish.
evandbob Posted July 29, 2017 #12 Share Posted July 29, 2017 Dolphins and flying fish are what I notice with the ship underway. Sometimes a few turtles while docked. Once, in St Croix in January, 2 adult and 1 baby whale were swimming on the other side of the dock. These are Caribbean sightings. Alaskan sightings are mostly whales, orcas, dolphins and seals. cb at sea Posted July 29, 2017 #13 Share Posted July 29, 2017 You will not see sharks...in deep water, they rarely come to the surface. Flying fish will be the most evident. Sometimes, dolphins in shallower waters, when approaching or leaving land. At sea, you are more likely to see seaweed (especially if you're in the Gulf Stream) than any sea life! Sixtytwo Posted July 29, 2017 #14 Share Posted July 29, 2017 Have seen many flying fish and not much else aquatic life. But, what I do see is TRASH! I is really surprising and disgusting how much plastic and other trash there is in the open waters!
navybankerteacher Posted July 29, 2017 #15 Share Posted July 29, 2017 You are simply not as likely to see sharks - porpoises and whales are air breathers, so they periodically break the surface - and flying fish do leap to escape predators - but sharks, even if they might be near the surface, have no reason to actually break the surface of the water - and unless you are looking straight down, you will not see anything below the surface of the water. matamanoa Posted July 29, 2017 #16 Share Posted July 29, 2017 On a Baltic cruise and from my balcony, I looked down and saw a mother whale and her calf just underneath us. What a thrill! We did see a shark fin while recently in the British Isles, also pods of bottlenose dolphins, flying fish. Have seen turtles in the Caribbean. ijkh Posted July 29, 2017 #17 Share Posted July 29, 2017 We saw a massive school of dolphin crossing the wake of our ship in South America. You had to be watching but you could see them jumping hundreds of them maybe a thousand jumping dolphin. It was amazing. I love seeing flying fish. We saw them mainly in the Southern Hemisphere. I love being on the sea. What a thrill.
SadieN Posted July 29, 2017 #18 Share Posted July 29, 2017 Seen many things off the West Coast A whale breaching in front of an NCL ship while it was rounding Land's End in Cabo A chilly February cruise to Avalon we couldn't figure out what all these black sticks sticking up in the water, in the kelp beds. It was the sea lions sticking their fins in the air for warmth, that was the cruise when our small tender was escorted in by several dolphins and sea lions. sloopsailor Posted July 29, 2017 #19 Share Posted July 29, 2017 I once saw five mermaids sitting on a large patch of seaweed singing a capella songs as we passed by. Or maybe I was enjoying my beverage package a bit too much that day. I am no longer sure which one it actually was! :p
terri-eddie Posted July 30, 2017 #20 Share Posted July 30, 2017 On our cruise last December, a pod of dolphins kept pace with the ship for about 5 minutes, leaping out of the water periodically like a fantastic water ballet. It was the most amazing sight. Just me and this older gentleman who spoke no English in a promenade seating area, but we shared our delight and enjoyment with smiles and nods. My husband was so envious when I told him about it earlier...he had gone to get ice cream!

kerryincork Posted July 30, 2017 #23 Share Posted July 30, 2017 Sharks don't like engine noise so would stay away from big cruise ships. My DS & DA saw a turtle once from the ship. All I ever see is jelly fish. Sent from my SM-N910F using Tapatalk
clackey Posted July 30, 2017 #24 Share Posted July 30, 2017 Sixteen cruises and I can honestly say that we have never seen a shark from the ship or while snorkeling. We have seen dolphins several times but no sharks.
