Mean & Nasty Passengers

I totally agree with you. Some people just don’t have any respect for the elderly.

Tony

I absolutely agree, passengers were very rude to my Mom as well, all she was doing was using the end of her cane to push the elevator buttons, they complained that it had been on the floor in the washroom and was transferring bacteria to the elevator buttons

and she had trouble with her arthritic hands using the tongs in the buffet so she had to use her hands, and of course she likes to squeeze the food first first to see if its exactly the one bread roll etc she wants, but she does put it all back

And of course the Purell is bad for her dermatitis so she doesn't use that, and the soap is hard on her skin so handwashing is a definite no-no

passengers are so unreasonable

Our experience on the whole has definitely been nice passengers, thank goodness. Only negative we have had has been on elevators. Survival of the fittest. Just take a deep breath and welcome several more passengers who will make sure the doors do not close. What is the huge rush? We are not going anywhere. This is my pet peeve. We witnessed one man who was given a nasty knock on his knee by a passenger in a wheelchair on the elevator who was rushing to get out. It was painful to watch. We have been on elevators where the cry is of course we can fit several more when it is obvious we cannot. So unnecessary. A little patience would go a long way. Anyway, we will continue to cruise and ignore the bad behavior of some passengers and appreciate the goodness of the majority.

OMG were you just on the Ruby Princess? If so, that guy that got hit with the wheelchair was my Dad. That knee is the knee he broke a few years ago! That's the reason it was taking the elevator, because it's really hard for him to use the elevator.

I only used the elevator when traveling with my parents who can't use the stairs easily. On a different occassion, my family of six plus I think three or four other people were on an elevator and a lady said oh, there's room! and she elbowed my brother in the stomach hard. I didn't see that but the elevator was so crowded that I got off and took the stairs to meet them.

Some people don't have the option of the stairs so be nice!

I have to say on my very first cruise, I was astonished by the number of mean, rude and nasty people. Just couldn't get it. This trip involves so little on your part except making choices. The ship is being driven and your room is right there. More food choices than one could imagine but people were still fussing and they were fussing about ridiculous things.

Please people learn to be grateful that you have these experiences. That you have the ability to travel and explore and nap if you want or eat more. So many others will never know this type of luxury. And no matter what line or ship it is truly a luxury.

I think that's what society has become nowadays. The internet has allowed everyone to be belligerent and get away with it and has translated into real life.

If the schedule says a 10:30 departure and we depart at 10:45 then it becomes a major incident with mandatory mega compensation and if you don't give me my way....we'll, you will be sorry.

Pool lounger hogs, buffet miners and my all time favorite- the people who don't let you out of the elevator... they just ram it in.

My tips for those types of passengers are to kill them with kindness. Once the other pax starts throwing f bombs, they have lost.

The best I encountered was with my 81 year old mom escorting her to the pool area. She slowly made her way up to the front row next to the pool. It was obvious that someone had just claimed about 10 chairs, spreading towels all over each chair.

My mom simply sat down on one of the loungers and laid back to enjoy the sun.

The nasty pool chair hogger walked up to my mom and very rudely told her that "I just put those towels down"!

Mom says "you did such a good job too be so kind and get me a gin and tonic please.

For the rest of the Hawaiian cruise she had a front row seat.

My personal favorite is the 'tender rush'. When the tender docks many stand up to be first off. We used it as a teaching moment for our then two younger children. We stayed seated and timed how long it took to empty the tender - it was about two minutes.

Just like the squishy elevator thing, is the jostling about on the tender really worth the two extra minutes on Princess Cays?

Things can also get mean during Trivia play...some people think that the prize is mucho $....there is no reason for bad behavior especially during a game that is suppose to fun for all.

The trivia contests stopped being fun several years ago - too many people arguing and yelling. I stopped playing about 5 years ago, I don't need another key chain that bad

We never had any problem except when people sit at the back to use their phones or tablets on or offline to find the answers, then there is a big fuss.

We are quite good at Trivia and make sure we always sit in full view at the front to make sure we cannot be accused of cheating if we happen to win.

I think the elevator issue could be alleviated by implementing a daily surcharge for usage. Brilliant! Another once included feature that becomes a revenue stream!

(ducking the fruits and vegetables being heaved my way)

The new Medallions will make it so easy to charge someone for just being somewhere, like every time they use an elevator, or a bathroom.

Haha, thanks.

Someone on here has Spike Jones as his icon. Oh...it's you!

I grew up listening to Spike, Mickey Katz, Stan Freeberg, etc....

I'm old enough to remember Stan in the 60's. The others I got into them from the old Dr. Demento show(but I digress)

That is true on nearly every cruise line (we cruise many lines). DW and I used to love trivia (we still have Princess mugs we won about 25 years ago). But once all the lines started moving towards "team trivia" things became serious (with some passengers) and ruined the fun. DW and I will sometimes sit near a trivia game and quietly answer the questions...but we never bother submitting our paper. We figure if winning is so important to some folks, we will not try to burst their bubble.

A couple of years ago, while on a long HAL cruise, some friends tried to recruit us to their Trivia Team. They quickly added that we had to show up at all the trivia games...even when we were still in port (this happens on longer cruises). We politely declined, and when they asked why, we simply explained that we could never guarantee where we would be at a given time. We tend to be free spirits on cruises, do Open Dining, and do what feels right at the time. Anything that involves an obligation is not part of our cruise DNA.

ELEVATORS - Sometimes we will wait till everybody pushes in then ask if they mind getting out so we can get out!

Sometimes I'll make the remark.."Like Maxwell house, Good to the last drop". I've seen a few hop off at that remark. Or I'll use the line from an old "Twilight Zone" episode; "Room for one more, honey" That one always gets a few to hop off. You need to see the episode to catch the reason!

If that woman did to me what she did to your brother, I'd crunch her foot but good! "Oh excuse me! Was that your foot? I'm so terribly sorry!" There ARE instances where retaliation IS in order. Not nice, but sometimes discipline IS necessary!

This can also be possible. Due to their advance age and peculiar mental state, some old folks can be very grumpy, unpleasant to deal with and may even resort to acting out or hitting others the way a young kid would if things don't go their way. I came across a few like that at the senior care home where my parents are staying.

When I first read the OP, I wasn't willing to make a judgement because there are two sides to a story. We've only heard from one side and we really don't know the exact words or how they were spoken. So, I wouldn't just assume that the OP is the exact true story and that's that.

Even so, to say that this kind of rudeness continued and therefore impacted their cruise as much as the OP says, makes you wonder if this is being blown up to make it seem like there were rude people all around and that rudeness was pointed directly at the OP's mother throughout the cruise or maybe, just maybe, the OP's mother had something to do with the responses people were directing towards her. Again, I am just raising some questions, not insinuating anything. But we've been on 11 cruises and while we have witnessed few cases of rudeness, I've never seen enough that would ruin our cruise or make me not want to cruise ever again. You can experience rudeness anywhere but its how you respond to it that will determine if it significantly impacts your experience or not.

I should add that I think we all have experienced the elevator rudeness but most of the time, I just look at my wife with a funny face, we snicker a little and then we go on enjoying our vacation. Hardly a significant enough of an experience to let it ruin our cruise.

It's truly not worth the rush, I wonder whether people are actually on holidays sometimes.

We were just on Celebrity Summit for 14 days and didn't see one mean or nasty person, people were polite even in the elevators, and trivia was fun, and they happily used the hand sanitizer as well.............. we wonder what the difference is between Celebrity passengers and Princess ones?

We didn't really feel Celebrity was for us, but the politeness and food was way better than Princess recently.
