Yesterday I sent an e-mail to my colleagues at School 3 to thank them for their support. Here is an edited version for all of you on Facebook and CruiseCritic.

My Dear Friends

As most of you know, on Tuesday evening I learned that my younger brother and his wife were killed in a bus accident while they were on a sightseeing tour in the Yucatan region of Mexico. As I write this, I am at 33,000 feet on my way to Cancun for anything but a Christmas vacation. I am representing my family in going to accompany their remains for their final journey home to Olympia, Washington.

As I reached out through social media I have been so touched by the support I received from so many of you in these past two days. Your kind words, your expressions of sympathy, and the many reminders of distant friendships have assured me that Diana and I do not walk through these troubled times alone. I need to tell you how important that is to us. Diana has been determined to try to respond to every post with at least a”like” or a quick thank you. I have not been nearly as ambitious. To all of you who have posted or messaged or reached out in some other way: please know how deeply we appreciate and need your support.

So as you approach and enjoy these upcoming holidays, please say an unexpected kind word someone, hug one another a little tighter, and if you can gin up the courage, dare to tell someone you love them. Make it a point to celebrate your family and friends; love them in ways that will have people asking what has gotten into you. Enjoy THESE moments, because the future is never guaranteed.

My life is enriched by the crossing of our paths and the sharing of some part of this journey. Thank you all for making me a better teacher, friend, parent and person.

Grace and Peace,

Sam Fritz

Sam Fritz, deepest sympathies and condolences to you and your family and friends. Although we have never met, it is comforting to us knowing that you are touched by this outpouring of prayers, condolences and thoughts. Thank you for the reminder that life is short and precious, your message is received loud and clear. Safe travels as you continue this most difficult trip to bring Andy and Jody home. God Bless!

Sam,

I have been following this tragedy and in particular your loss. My heart broke for you when I read your post that you did in fact lose your loved ones. I cried when I read the article someone posted about your amazing brother and sister in law. And yet again with the loving, appreciative and thoughtful letter you shared with us.

I know no words can ease your pain, but know there are many people out there thinking of you and sending love and prayers to you and your family. I also want to thank Mark O for sharing the link to the go fund me project. Hopefully that can ease the financial burden from your shoulders during this stressful time.

Erika

Like the countless other people in this thread, I am truly sorry for the loss of your brother and SIL. What a horrible accident and family tragedy! I hope your travels to escort them home are safe and as easy as possible.

This will, no doubt, be a burden your family will carry with you the rest of your lives, but I am hopeful you have a ton of wonderful memories to always make you smile remembering these dear loved ones.

Safe future sailings and I hope to see you posting more pleasant things here on CC again when the pain of this event has subsided a bit. Much love and kindness to you and your family.

We just received an e-mail communication from my children's elementary school that a child from their school along with his mother and grandmother were killed in this accident. How utterly tragic, my heart goes out to all the families affected by this and their communities. This child was not in either of my children's grade levels but I'm sure they will hear about it and have questions.

Sam,

Your family will be in our thoughts and prayers as we and our community are thinking of all those involved at this time.

So sad, only 11 years old. I hope the children at the school are able to cope with the loss.

We live in NoVA and it's been all over the news for a couple of days. The father and older brother survived. Dad with some injuries and oldest son with a few scrapes.

I've been thinking about this thread a lot as I just can't get it out of my mind. It should be a reminder to everyone that every time we get behind the wheel of a vehicle we have the potential to affect someone else's life forever. It can happen by speeding, texting, talking on your phone, playing with the radio, trying to keep your dog off of your lap, etc. People need to stop being inconsiderate and selfish when the have the mechanical power of a motor vehicle in their hands. None of us wants to be the reason that another thread like this one ever appears on Cruise Critic again.

Sam, I hope you can find some peace this Christmas.

Doctor, so well said.

We live in a "scary" country, but the scariest thing is getting behind the wheel. The amount of drivers "dealing" with their cell phones is amazing. Stop signs are a merely recommendation.

If I'm the first on a red light, I pause a second more when it turns green, just to be sure that some "meshuge" isn't stealing it. I'm thinking of every trip car if it is really necessary, given the fact that are so many irresponsible drivers out there....

In the UK people are heavily penalised if they are caught using their phones when driving and if anyone was killed through this dangerous driving they face a life prison sentence.

I wish the US had laws as tough. It amazes me how many people I see texting while driving.

Anyone caught using a phone it is a 6 point penalty and a fine.

12 points gets you a 12 month driving ban.

The courts have the power to sentence someone who causes death by dangerous driving(Speeding, drink driving or using a phone) to a life prison sentence but in reality it is left to a judge to decide and it could be anything from 3-20 years.

I just talked to my son in laws uncle, him and his wife went on the same excursion that day but through an independent contractor. They were 2 buses ahead of the one that crashed. He said their driver was going 120km per hour about(74 mph) for awhile. The driver was passing cars and buses the whole way. He said they were all nervous the entire way there. They were told that the bus drivers try to get their bus to the ruins first. Their tour guide was a friend of the tour guide that died. He knew of the crash before they arrived at the ruins and was very upset.

Speechless....God bless you Sam and Dianna and all the families affected by this.

Sam & Dianna we are deeply sorry for you and the other families involved in that terrible crash.

Lets hope the culprit is punished properly and all future tours drivers learn by this and don't speed or drink alcohol late the night before.

Speed limiters should be fitted to all coaches for future safety.
