grapau27 Posted January 20, 2018 #352 Share Posted January 20, 2018 I think they should just get rid of the diamond lounge. I'm kind of curious if royal would make more money without the diamonds. They usually book cheap cabins, don't get drink packages and just consume free drinks in the lounge, etc. If royal is sailing full all the time anyways, getting these people out may seem like good business. Considering how busy the diamond lounge is, that's a lot of discounted cabins, free drinks, "we don't do excursions", and no drink packages. There would also be a substantial drop in smug on board as well. So when you get to Diamond you will refuse to go into the DL?. We are D+ and have booked balcony cabins or higher on 42 out of 45 cruises.
grapau27 Posted January 20, 2018 #353 Share Posted January 20, 2018 lol. You are special. We ALWAYS get the drink package. Eat in specialty restaurants. Book excursions. Stay in at least a balcony. So.... the reason people become diamond is because they have enough money to go on that many cruises. And I can’t speak for everyone, but that also means you have money to spend on everything else cruises entail. I’m 100% positive royals keeps track of that stuff too (who spends what and when and where) So for them to give people a few drinks and snacks is a drop in the bucket compared to home much money is spent by that clientele. ILCTCRUISER Posted January 20, 2018 #354 Share Posted January 20, 2018 What kind of light breakfast do they serve? Danishes like they have already in the buffet and DR, or something nicer? The usual items are: fruit, salmon, deli meats and cheeses, breads (croissant, rolls, gluten free bread), sweets (usually what can be had in WJ), juices, yogurts, cereals (though at times it's gone MIA)/muesli, specialty coffees. I tend to go there more often than DW. It's usually quiet, peaceful, uncrowded, which is probably the reason I prefer it. However, at times DW will go to WJ and pick up an omelet or oatmeal or whatever and bring it up to DL or CL; I've also done so.

Diamond Plus here, always a balcony, occasionally a junior suite, always specialty restaurants, coffee card, casino, shore excursions, bingo & occasionally something from the gift shop. So we do not do cheap cruises as referred to to get points. We do 5-6 cruises a year (not all on RCL) now that we are retired & can afford these cruising vacations. payitforward Posted January 20, 2018 #362 Share Posted January 20, 2018 ...With most people having drink packages it means more money for the cruise line. We diamond and above “loyalists” who use the DL for our cocktails are spending less and therefore are not a priority for the cruise line. What makes you think "most" people get the drink packages? I usually cruise with large groups, and there are only a handful of people in each group that buy the drink packages. I think they should just get rid of the diamond lounge. I'm kind of curious if royal would make more money without the diamonds. While there may be some who are smug, and some who brag about how little they spend, there are PLENTY who don't use the diamond lounges, always book balconies or higher, purchase drinks and excursions, etc.

BNBR Posted January 21, 2018 #373 Share Posted January 21, 2018 You just described us. We are elite on Celebrity and will be Diamond on our first two RCI cruises in April. If Royal or Celebrity stiffed its loyal cruisers it is doubtful if they would remain loyal to the cruise lines. Also, it would be terrible PR. Further, with no loyalty program, little incentive to book more cruises. As for drink packages, not everyone drinks all day or sets out to max their alcohol content. As for ship's excursions that frequently are double or triple the cost of private tours, the cruise lines are just not being competitive. It is not being smug, it is just making the best business judgment. We want to travel and cruise as much as possible. Not having a special lounge and a few free happy hour well drinks is "stiffing" loyal cruisers? Or is it the free use of a used robe? ;p

"Refuse", no. I'd treat it like any other lounge or bar. I seriously don't get the status in Royal. It's virtually nothing. I find myself reading the perks every couple of months, just trying to figure out exactly why everyone here keeps talking about trying so hard to get status. I seriously don't get it. You get virtually nothing. Hopefully people have a sense of humor with my posts on the topic.... But in all seriousness, I do read the perks every so often, just trying to understand the draw, and I'm absolutely baffled by it.
