Restroom Attendant TIP

So you honestly think that they value more of your thank you notes more than the tip you offer.

Let me ask you how many pounds of rice can they buy with your thank you notes to feed the hunger families on the other side of globe?

I hope my cash tip was valued, but the smile on the attendants face when I thanked her was genuine....

I could possibly understand your ‘wrath’ if I had said ‘thank you’ without tipping but to tip, say thankyou and to acknowledge to the management team that I thought a member of staff was doing a great job still leaves me baffled about why you seem angry with me.....

Some members of the crew on a cruise ship(or any career) work only for the paycheck and gratuities. Most people appreciate a sincere thank you as much or more than the immediate cash. They understand that the cash will come over time from doing their job well. But, true appreciation is harder to receive. (Nasty people tip in cash too)

It has been my practice to write complementary remarks about crew members who stood out for their service and pleasant, cordial personalities. I do this both on the customer satisfaction survey and the form that is handed out during the cruise.

In January we praised a crew member and when we saw him again in February on the same ship, but a later cruise, we asked him if he knew he had been praised and he informed us no one had ever told him.

That really made me wonder how important that praise really is if the crew doesn't even know. I wonder on really big ships, such as Solstice Class ships if someone is really reading what might be a thousand comment cards every week. Maybe they just choose some at random.

All this leads me to believe that a cash tip may go further than written praise. If any insider here knows the standard practice on comment cards, I'd love to know.

That's the opposite of our experience, but maybe we don't cruise as much. :)

We always complete a comment card or two part way through the cruise and mention all who have made our cruise better, including examples of what they did (including a lovely restroom attendant on the Eclipse last year). We have never asked the staff if they heard about the comments, but many have thanked us profusely in the next day or two. They have said that it goes a long way to help with promotions or special privileges, such as extra time off. One said that his manager read it and commended him in front of his colleagues at a meeting.

My husband took a behind-the-scenes tour a couple of years ago and on the crew quarters bulletin board he saw comment cards from guests. Each area probably has its own culture, but we have heard about these cards being taken seriously several times. Not so sure about the post cruise survey.

Are we supposed to tip that person for opening the door or handing us a towel?

It is common practice on land and I wonder if anyone does it on board? 🤔

Lumi worked as a cleaned the bathroom on Deck three of Connie for many years. She took great pride in her work and was Shinng Star of the year. Before joining Celebrity she was a certified aircraft mechanic who lost her job after Romania split away from the Soviet Union.

This is going to be my new cruising tradition: tip someone who is doing a tedious job and making the best of it. Also, get the name so I can mention the good service on the cruise survey because that is how these people get recognized by Celebrity.

Thank you! I'm going to adopt your tradition.:)

Sunday is a very slooooow day for some people.

Phil

A ridiculous statement. It actually makes me think of all the people that work relentlessly and are never recognized. You must be having a slow Sunday reading the posts. Find something else to do.

Thank you for your informative response to my question. We have had crew members on Royal Caribbean thank us for comments we wrote about them on previous cruises, but it has never happened on Celebrity even though we now cruise Celebrity more than Royal.

We have had crew members ask us if we would please mention them on the survey, so I guess they feel it is important. I'm glad to know the cards are posted on a bulletin board for all to see. Maybe not every crew member checks the postings.

I guess I'll keep on praising outstanding crew members and hope it does help some, even if it doesn't help all. One reason might be that some go on vacation, change ships or just plain leave Celebrity before the e-mail survey is posted or evaluated.

I don't usually carry cash around on the ship so I don't tip the restroom attendants every time I use the facilities.

On our last night of the last cruise, I had $10 bill in my purse. I recognized the woman who was working in the restroom outside the theater was the same woman I had seen multiple times a day in the pool and buffet restrooms. She was always pleasant and kept the facilities immaculate. I handed her the $10 and thanked her for being so attentive. She was really surprised and overjoyed to be remembered. This is going to be my new cruising tradition: tip someone who is doing a tedious job and making the best of it. Lovely idea! Think I'll adopt it myself. Thanks!

I do think those comments get read. I usually get a thank you letter from the hotel director. I've seen the staff captain deliver the good comment cards to the maitre d' for that particular dining room. And we had an assistant waiter who told us on a subsequent cruise that he had been promoted to waiter because everybody at our table submitted wonderful comment cards about him.

Someone must have misread your comment.

We have been told by several waiters and stewards that they place high value on receiving excellent comments on the post cruise surveys and comment cards. I have no reason to disbelieve them. Of course tips are appreciated also.

I have tipped the ladies in the restrooms on most of my cruises. On the last one in Autumn I met the most pleasant woman she kept the toilets spotless and was so friendly! I said to my husband I wanted to give her a bit extra at the end of the cruise, because I so appreciate what these ladies do.I knew her name but on the last night she wasn't there so I left a note and a thankyou tip in an envelope and gave it to reception to pass it on. I hope she received it. Dianne

I have seen it in Italy, Mexico, Bermuda, local night clubs, higher end restaurants and bars, Casinos in Las Vegas. In Italy, Mexico and Bermuda it was more of a service charge that one was required to pay and that could be because those areas don’t TIP.

I have also seen it in some TV shows and movies where the female would ask her male companion for some money for the restroom attendant.

Why? Because they are providing a service and some actually pay to “rent” the space to do so. They also are required provide clean restrooms.

I will gladly tip any staff member who truly provides good service with a smile, rather than listen to waiters and cabin stewards "beg" for high ratings on comment cards. I've been told their supervisors look as any rating below excellent as a failure; and as much as say "If you aren't going to give me a 10, then you might as well give me 0." If passengers are wrangled into giving inflated ratings, comment cards become meaningless.

I don’t regularly, but have given a couple of women a tip on the last night of the cruise because they were consistently friendly and helpful (has always been in the restroom closest to Ensemble lounge on S class since we are there a lot or in Blu/Michaels/specialties nearby).

I’m glad you asked because I’ve been wondering too.

I have been in the men's room near the Ensemble lounge. I have tip the guy a number of times. He was nice, funny and most important is to see people wash their hands.

The men's room near the Ensemble Lounge is very small. OMG, am I the only one who finds it a little creepy to walk in and find the attendant standing at "Parade Rest" with mop in hand ready to swab up any urine that he may find that may drip outside the bowl?

I think it's a little over the top. I think it would be fine if they came in every 15-20 minutes to check it out.

Agree with Wino; personally I am a tad creeped out by bathroom attendants. Am perfectly capable of grabbing my own towel and dislike someone watching over me while doing my business. Clean bathrooms are important - but this is best accomplished by frequently checking in rather than being stationed inside. That is how upscale restaurants in my neck of the woods handle this.

As the auto-grats don’t include these crew members, I am pretty sure they are earning a living wage and not counting on tips - certainly a nice gesture if some choose to tip them, but tipping them is not an expectation on Celebrity.

On our Silhouette TA there was an attendant in the ladies room just outside of Liminae. She had the voice of an angel and would sing as she tidied up. On the last evening I made a visit to tip her and get her name so I could mention it on the guest comments. She was not there but I've often wondered if she still works for X.

I remember her! :)

And I am so glad that this subject has been brought up! I feel bad because I have never thought about tipping the ships bathroom attendants until my most recent cruise. I used that same Ensemble Lounge ladies room every single night. The attendant was so pleasant. On the last night of the cruise, I was the only passenger in the bathroom after the show. I thanked her for always being pleasant and keeping the room so nice. A thought then entered my mind and I wondered if it was alright to tip. I certainly did not get the impression that it was expected (like the restroom attendants at the CLT airport that have the candy and money jars side by side :D), nor ever gave it a thought before. Of course, I had no money with me, but made a mental note to discuss this topic on CC. Which I quickly dismissed! :o

So, I plan to make sure that DH and I do so on the last night of our upcoming cruise. I don't like the idea of tipping after each visit. And I also like the idea of mentioning the attendants on the "Attention to Detail" cards.

In women's washrooms it is good to be able to rely on finding a clean stall when you open the door, so I really appreciate the attendants. It may well be different in men's rooms! I usually tip a few dollars at the end of the cruise and it seems to be appreciated.

I have never seen an attendant stationed in a 'restroom' on a cruise ship. Is this common on Celebrity ships?

I think I saw it once although that may have been an RC ship but I rarely use the public restrooms.

Am I alone in finding restroom attendants a little but creepy? I'd rather they just do their cleaning regularly and stay hidden the rest of the time.
