happyboomer Posted April 4, 2018 #1 Share Posted April 4, 2018 Just off the Equinox and had $240 worth of credit to use so I went to the Equinox Hair Salon to get full foil highlights on my short hair. Highlights were $155.00, stylist charged $65 for color she said I needed to add, and then charged me $65.00 to wash and style my hair. Really, was I supposed to go back to my cabin and wash the chemicals out of my hair myself? My salon at home includes washing my hair and blowing it dry when they do highlights. With the gratuity I ended up paying $83.00 out of pocket and used all of my credit for these highlights. Went to dinner and our table noticed my hair, said how nice the haircut looked. I didn't get it cut. Nobody could tell I had highlights done. Stylist said they would lighten up. It's been a week and still looks the same color as when I walked into that salon. The Stylist was nice and said she was experienced but apparently color blind! Total waste of an afternoon and money.

Rare mom says Posted April 4, 2018 #3 Share Posted April 4, 2018 There's a reason I get my hair done BEFORE a cuise, not DURING. Just the thought of an unknown hairdresser doing a chemical treatment on my hair - Be glad nothing worse happened.
Ladyinflight Posted April 4, 2018 #4 Share Posted April 4, 2018 I know what you mean. I went to the salon in response to an coupon special for a hot oil condition treatment and scalp massage for $29.99. The young lady asked if I also wanted it washed. I said, "of course I want it washed, I never heard of a person getting a treatment and then not having the hair washed. What am I suppose to do, walk out of here with that mess in my hair". She told me the wash would be extra. After the wash, she asked if I wanted it blow dried. I had to tell her my hair does not get blow dried, I have a curl, it air dries. She then proceeded to tell me that my hairdresser was doing my hair all wrong and that she should be using some product she mentioned. I told her I was going right home and tell my hairdresser, according to her, what she has been doing wrong with my hair:rolleyes::rolleyes:, yeah, right. My final bill was only $55.00. I guess I got off easy. Those salon coupons are nothing but a come on:mad:
CruisersTimesThree Posted April 4, 2018 #5 Share Posted April 4, 2018 I would never let anyone other then my long time trusted hairdresser do anything with my hair, especially with dyes or highlights. I also would have questioned what the cost for every service she intended to do. If you had known beforehand you probably would have saved your OBC. I have had it done before on different ships and have always had good luck with their stylists. This was a first time I've had a bad experience. 20pluscruises Posted April 4, 2018 #9 Share Posted April 4, 2018 By chance were you in there when I was getting my hair blown out? The stylist made me bend my head back like I was in the shampoo bowl because she was so short. I'm not Gumby damnit! I finally had to speak up and tell her either do it from the side or the front or I will finish it myself. My neck had a kink for two days. I also was sold a conditioner treatment not realizing it was an extra $34.00 for conditioner. Wash, conditioner and blow dry for $120. CRAZY! To be fair....my DH had his haircut by the same stylist and was very happy.

To be fair....my DH had his haircut by the same stylist and was very happy. I was not in there then, but I guess we both learned a lesson. There was only one other person in there getting her hair blown out and a male stylist was doing her hair. My stylist told me she was giving me the "port" pricing for the extra color treatment she said I needed. So it could have been worse. Still can't believe they charge to wash your hair after they color it. I have had my hair cut on HAL, Princess, and even once on Carnival. They all seemed well trained in their profession and I got really great cuts. I am not a very fussy person, I have very thick hair and it grows quickly so taking a chance on a cut is one thing but blowing a fortune for what I got this time was disappointing. Won't visit a Celebrity Salon again. One of our friends also went to the salon and got a cut and she was happy with it and her hair looked great. Buyer beware! bigbeergut Posted April 4, 2018 #12 Share Posted April 4, 2018 Next time go to the casino and stop at the roulette table. Bet everything on Black or Red. At least you'll have almost a 50% chance of winning and it won't cost you anything out of pocket. Leave after your one bet.
sdnich Posted April 4, 2018 #13 Share Posted April 4, 2018 This is very sad to hear I am a hairstylist and could not imagine doing a full color with highlights and not doing shampoo conditioner and blow dry ! When someone leaves a salon you want them to be feeling really good about their hair ! On my last cruise I got a massage and felt that was overpriced and just average not going to see the spa or salon ever again!! I did though forget my shampoo in a hotel right before a Cruise and was very glad they had good products for me to buy. Pretty picky about my shampoo and conditioner and did not like what was in the shower! It was overpriced but good!! cruzeluver Posted April 4, 2018 #14 Share Posted April 4, 2018 Those prices are ridiculous, even by on board salon standards. And charging additional for the wash is beyond stupid. I can see using similar tactics throughout the ship : 1. Dinner in the main dining room is included in your fare, but a fork will cost you $20.00 per meal. 2. Want to stand on an open deck and gaze out at the water? Sure, but just be aware there is a $1.00 per minute "viewing fee". 3. For your convenience, a gratuity will be added to your on board account for any questions posed to a crew member. 4. Admittance to the main theater is granted to all passengers. There will be an additional charge of $10.00 per person should you wish your seat to face the stage. * * charge is waved for Elite Plus and Pinnacle members as well as those guests staying in suites and is reduced to $5.00 for Elite guests. Queen of Oakville Posted April 4, 2018 #16 Share Posted April 4, 2018 I can't imagine why one would want to spend all that time on a cruise sitting in a salon having a stranger touch your hair  Most high end salons will charge for a blow dry with a chemical service. Generally, the only time a dry is included is if you have a cut. For me, if I want to use up OBC, I head to the stores and find a nice designer hand bag to bring home :D
Champagne Cruiser Posted April 4, 2018 #17 Share Posted April 4, 2018 Before Canyon Ranch took over I would get a relaxing for my curly hair and a cut and it was great. After 2 bad haircuts that were overpriced I never go in to the Spa for any treatments. They are using stylists that a not very good and probably paying them less based on where they are from but have raised the prices from the last vendor. Rare hcat Posted April 4, 2018 #18 Share Posted April 4, 2018 Thanks for the heads up on the salon.. In all our cruises I only once went to the Salon for a wash & blow dry in advance of a photo session..it was done nicely. So sad that Steiner is starting to look better than CR in many ways... I used to enjoy the Steiner frangipani hair treatment...glad I bought some to take home.
2theship Posted April 4, 2018 #19 Share Posted April 4, 2018 Next time, get a massage!!!:) I won't even get a massage on a ship. I have some wonderful massage therapists here at home who know me and my needs. They never try to upsell me and I get get two massages here for the price of one on a ship. Besides, I don't want to take time out of my cruise to hang out in the spa.
Tiggertastic Posted April 4, 2018 #20 Share Posted April 4, 2018 It is about time you’re given the full details before you book. I’ve never had a shirt Nile treatment come out at the same expected price, I’ve stopped going after being charged $140 for my nails doing. I pay £29 at home including the soak off. Redtravel Posted April 4, 2018 #21 Share Posted April 4, 2018 Never visit the hair salon on a ship. Get your hair colored, cut, etc. before embarkation. At home, I would never walk in to a salon cold. I always ask friends and look for reviews. Post a picture.
Covepointcruiser Posted April 4, 2018 #22 Share Posted April 4, 2018 What you were charged is a quite a bit less than in a Good Georgetown Salon. You can get highlights and a haircut with wash and dry at Great Clips for $85 , tip not included. That is the lowest price in the DC or Annapolis area. I would only get a wash and dry from an unknown stylist, that way there can be no permanent damage.

NLH Arizona Posted April 4, 2018 #24 Share Posted April 4, 2018 The cost for the highlights seems high and probably should have been around $100. The cost of the hair color sounds right, as that is what I normally pay at a land salon. The cost to wash and style your hair that seems a little high. On my last cruise, it costs me $40 to wash and style my short, but not really short, hair.
Cruisenouvelle Posted April 5, 2018 #25 Share Posted April 5, 2018 "I'm not Gumby damnit! " Best line of the entire thread!!! On a serious note, I enjoy the little port day specials like mix& match 3 treatments for $99,etc.
