Emmy11386 Posted July 4, 2018 #1 Share Posted July 4, 2018 We have a Disney cruise booked for next May. Our plan is to try to get pregnant right after. Two of our ports, St. Thomas and Tortola, have active Zika warnings. We already planned on staying on board for St. Thomas since we’ve already been and want to enjoy a mostly empty ship. We’re now thinking about staying on for Tortola too to be safe. We would check ourselves daily, and if we got bit, wait the recommended 6 months. So my question is, have you seen mosquitoes on the ship while in port?
Etta1213 Posted July 4, 2018 #2 Share Posted July 4, 2018 Not one in 10 carib cruises.
leaveitallbehind Posted July 4, 2018 #3 Share Posted July 4, 2018 Never seen any on a ship and never been an issue on shore either with us. But to be safe, if you are concerned, just bring a Deet based bug spray along with you and use it if you feel the need.
KreinKrunker Posted July 4, 2018 #4 Share Posted July 4, 2018 Never in the Caribbean, but plenty in Alaska.

Krazy Kruizers Posted July 4, 2018 #6 Share Posted July 4, 2018 The only time we had to use the DEET that we always take with us, has been on tours where we were walking in the forests. Otherwise we have never seen them on the ship or in port in the Caribbean or even in Alaska.
dogs4fun Posted July 4, 2018 #7 Share Posted July 4, 2018 Never seen any onboard ship. Definitely take repellent with deet.
#1TravelMom Posted July 4, 2018 #8 Share Posted July 4, 2018 I have never had a single bite while on a cruise(55+ cruises). I'm not saying it can't happen - but I think it's very unlikely. Normally, I am a mosquito magnet. Everyone else will be fine and I will have many bites.
JimnKaren Posted July 4, 2018 #9 Share Posted July 4, 2018 Never mosquito type insects. However, in Santa Marta earlier this year, the ship was over-run with flies. It was a challenge in the dining areas. Don't worry about mosquitoes unless you are going into the deep woods or parts of the island where there might be standing water. That won't happen near the ports. Have fun. Jim
Nebr.cruiser Posted July 4, 2018 #10 Share Posted July 4, 2018 I have never seen mosquitoes on 30+ cruises in the Caribbean either. A few tiny gnat-like insects once walking through jungle to go tubing in Belize. But, with your situation it is better to be cautious. Use Deet and stay away from jungle and you should be fine. Maybe check with your doctor first, though, as most of us just don't have enough information to guide you.
