I think most of us want a "vacation" when on a vacation, and don't want to do our own housekeeping or bus tables or get REALLY nickeled and dimed. YMMV, and maybe there will indeed be something offered for those like you. GC There was a cruise line that operated on this level (including all meals were on a pay as you go snack bar like place). Easy Cruise was the name. In any case, the line is out of business. Not enough people wanted to cruise on the hostel level. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EasyCruise

This would save us a fortune. Right now we are paying for what we are not using, we are subsidizing everyone else. From someone who rarely goes to the buffet I thank you for subsidizing my cruises.

You are using as much of the wait staff services and houskeeping as anyone else on the ship. Who do you think is busing the table so that there is a clean table to use when you walk in? Removing your used dishes as needed from the table as you eat? Offering the coffee, tea or water for the table as you eat? And who do you think is going to give you those clean towels when you want them? Keep the hallways and other public areas outside your cabin clean? Clean the accumulation of three days worth of cabin living? Well said...

Some people pitch tents on the deck. Yes, seriously. GC That sounds terrible....I'd rather stay home.. :) I agree with the hostel level of cruising comment above. There is a reason hostels aren't very popular in the big scheme of things. Edited November 14, 2018 by PTC DAWG
Sea saw 56 Posted November 15, 2018 #31 Share Posted November 15, 2018 IMO the cruise lines have the stewards in the rooms twice daily to keep things maintained, to avoid having so much to do on turn around day. In hotels there is never 'one single day' when all the rooms are vacated at the same time, then re-occupied a few hours later. It would take too long to turn a room around for the next guest if days of clutter, etc. piled up. Personally, sometimes it takes a few extra minutes to make sure things are picked up and put away out of sight (that we really don't want to leave out when someone is cleaning our room) but that also keeps us organized as well. Even though I'm on vacay, I can't deal with messy disorganization.
GUT2407 Posted November 15, 2018 #32 Share Posted November 15, 2018 One reason I cruise (or stay in hotels) is the little luxury so from me it’s a no thanks
erdoran Posted November 15, 2018 #33 Share Posted November 15, 2018 (edited) I'm staying in a Marriott right now on a business trip. They offered, and I gladly accepted, 500 pts/day extra to opt out of housekeeping - max 3 days worth of optout. Well worth it to me. I can call down if I want towels, in-room coffee, etc. I''m by myself, very neat, ad really don/t need daily housekeeping. NLH Arizona Posted November 15, 2018 #35 Share Posted November 15, 2018 I did this on one of my trips to Caesar's in Las Vegas. It was a 2 day trip and they credited me $10. It was okay because it was a short trip, but wouldn't like it for a long trip. I don't know if any cruise line would do this, because, unlike a hotel, their staff can't not come in or just go home if not needed. Think about it if, 200 people opt out on a cruise ship, you would be talking about 15 or 20 Cabin Stewards that wouldn't be doing their job (do you think a cruise line will want to continue to pay these crew members). Sure, they could cut down on the overall number of Cabin Stewards, but then what would they do if 100% of the passengers wanted the services...now can't you just imagine all the complaints: my cabin didn't get cleaned today, they didn't clean my cabin until 1:00, there was dust on the top of the tv, there was a piece of paper on the floor, etc.
K_e_short Posted November 16, 2018 #36 Share Posted November 16, 2018 I would totally do this. And not just to save money. I think it is a waste of time, water, supplies, etc. to change sheets every day, towels, etc. When we stayed at Disney All Star we only wanted the room cleaned every 2-3 days and the staff got upset. They even put a bag of soap, towels, etc. by our door. Same thing when we went on our last cruise. We kept trying to tell our room steward to only come every second day but he was amazing and cleaned every day.
Barb Nahoumi Posted November 16, 2018 #37 Share Posted November 16, 2018 Cleaning our cabin once a day would be sufficient for us. Our Daily could be placed in the "Notice Holder" outside of our cabin door. Towel animals could be left in the morning. No need to come back in the evening. While I haven't opted out (yet), I could see the benefit if I'm traveling by myself and only for one or two nights. On a cruise ship, like the previous poster, I'm not sure how practical it would be and, besides, I rather enjoy walking into a neat cabin. FYI. I'm at Caesars in Las Vegas. It has to be for 2 nights or more and you get $10 Credit if it is 2 nights or more, as it is not $10 anignt.
