Rossey Posted November 28, 2018 #1 Share Posted November 28, 2018 We're sailing on Oosterdam and wondered how secure the safes are for jewelry, credit cards and passports. Have any problems been reported on HAL recently? Thanks.
Krazy Kruizers Posted November 28, 2018 #2 Share Posted November 28, 2018 I haven't heard any problems. We always use the safes.
canadianbear Posted November 28, 2018 #3 Share Posted November 28, 2018 We also use the safe and it’s been fine. On the Koningsdam we liked that it lighted up. The safes hold a lot too.

Rare Turtles06 Posted November 28, 2018 #5 Share Posted November 28, 2018 As a safe, our safe on the Zuiderdam was fine. The only "problem" was its placement very far back on a low shelf in the closet. It was hard to reach and very dark. But it was indeed big! Rossey Posted November 28, 2018 Author #6 Share Posted November 28, 2018 Thanks you for replying. I'm not bringing the Hope diamonds but wanted to be sure my little trinkets will be ok. Saturday can't come soon enough! Happy sailing to all.

SJSULIBRARIAN Posted November 28, 2018 #8 Share Posted November 28, 2018 My experience on most cruises lines including HAL is entering a number.

All the safes on HAL ships we've been on are combo (keypad) locks. We've been on every class except the new K-Dam's so can't comment on those. I really dislike those types that require the CC to unlock, as then only one of us can open/close it. CruiserBruce Posted November 28, 2018 #10 Share Posted November 28, 2018 The credit card ones have been gone from HAL for a long time, and are disappearing from the world in general.

As others have said you pick your number to use. Unless you’re on the Koningsdam bring a small flashlight (we always do anyway) to help with the safe. randr5153 Posted November 28, 2018 #12 Share Posted November 28, 2018 Just off the Volendam and used the safe. The Volendam still have the cc type.

RubyCam Posted November 28, 2018 #14 Share Posted November 28, 2018 I had a safe with a keypad on the Veendam last May. If I recall correctly it was on a closet shelf around waist height.

I'm guessing the safe's keypad hard to see?
Rare Terre Posted November 28, 2018 #16 Share Posted November 28, 2018 Thank you to everyone who answered my question. We will be on the Koingsdam and I like that they light up as someone mentioned.

I found ours was just fine-we were in a Signature suite so not sure if that makes any difference on the placement of the safe. I’ll find out in January when I sail with a girlfriend on the K. as we are in a regular balcony for that cruise.
Rare POA1 Posted November 29, 2018 #18 Share Posted November 29, 2018 We've never had a problem. However, if you are traveling with expensive jewelry, your insurance carrier may require you to use a house safe in order to cover your items. (I'm talking really expensive pieces)

Could have a problem getting one of these bad boys on a commercial plane
SusieKIslandGirl Posted November 29, 2018 #20 Share Posted November 29, 2018 We usually keep 2 hotel room cards to use in case the safe needs a card rather than a combo. That way each of us has a card and we don't have to hide it somewhere.

The last cruise we had that required a CC for the safe we just brought two identical expired cards (had kept them for this purpose). That way each of us had a card for the safe. I don't remember having a light in our K'dam safe. Maybe ours wasn't working or maybe our VE cabin didn't have that kind. I know people have mentioned having closet hanger bars that lit up, and we definitely did not have that ... pretty sure they're only in the suites. Rare Terre Posted December 2, 2018 #23 Share Posted December 2, 2018 I actually prefer entering a four digit number to keeping up with the card. I hate having to make sure I have with me at all times.

If you mean Credit Card that rather defeats a primary use for the safe for us. If it's Credit Card we unfortunately have never kept our expired ones as has Caribill. randr5153 Posted December 2, 2018 #25 Share Posted December 2, 2018 The safe in our room used a credit card to open/close. It used a mag strip reader. We were in a balcony room on navigation deck. We used our debit card. Hope this helped Randr5153
