Printing receipts with each drink order to get more tips

Recommended Posts

On the cruises I have been on it seems hit or miss with receipts or not. I never felt guilted into giving a tip. Sometimes I will tip but they don't seem to care or even look at it. Never had a dirty look or poor service from drawing a line through it and signing. Just enjoy the cruise without feeling guilty.

I've been on 5 RCCL cruises now, all of which I had the drink package for. I most recently just got back from enchantment of the seas where I saw something I hadn't before. With every drink purchase made by every person (even if you has the drink package) they were printing and making you sign a receipt and either add a tip amount or cross it off. This was at every bar including Coco cay.  I found this kind of annoying as the drink package already has an 18% upcharge to cover tipping the bartenders but it really felt kind of crappy to never give them anything so they did guilt me into tipping extra quite a bit. Normally I would just tip cash to my favorites towards the end of the crew.

Has anyone else ever experienced this? Most the people on the ship seemed really confused and were only used to getting a receipt if you owed money on a purchase. What do you think? Find this as annoying as I did? As an aside, it seemed like a great waste of paper as most people tipped $0. It also slowed down bar service quite a bit while receipts printed and they grabbed a pen. I tried not signing one time at the coffee shop and the guy darn near Chased me down.

I said the Harmony in September and got a receipt only a handful of times. I had the drink package as well.

The receipt is to protect Royal. One so they know how many drinks you had (and when to cut you off). Also to stop cruisers from slipping the server a $20 or $50 bill, and drinking without the drink package at no cost.

unless you are only drinking singles( glass of wine, straight  hard stuff, etc).. why do you think it is not warranted?   they must  assemble the drink,  make sure there are clean glasses and the  extra like olives at hand and  THEY are doing the work.. not you.

I pretty much only drink wine myself  but that still entails uncorking at a minimum and it isn't like I  will ever be handed the bottle to pour myself a glass....

I agree with a PP  that is a  local decision made by the Beverage manager.   they are wanting to track something. but it isn't  to scam extra tip out of you.

If you are prepaying the gratuity for service that hasn’t happened yet why should you pay an extra gratuity on top of that? If I purchase the drink package and never order a single drink I’m not going to be refunded for the gratuity. There will be some who order more and will beat the system but I bet that there are more who don’t drink enough to cover the daily rate. I would be more annoyed that I had to bother to sign for something that has been paid for and produced revenue pre cruise that I would have no problem writing the word zero instead of my signature.  New cruisers are bound to fall for this scam.

Nonsense,

they know what you have had to drink by swiping the card, no need to print the receipt. I can’t imagine a bartender taking the risk to perpetrate the theft you propose. Without swiping a card to account for the missing booze it would be obvious at the end of day inventory that someone was skimming, a printed receipt has zero to do with this.

Make sure to check your reciept!!  On anthem hubby took my seapass card to the casino bar. A place we did not frequent too much. (Other bars we tipped well and did not even show our cards and wete greeted by name)

And yes we both had the bev pkg. Next day i had a drink charge. Trip to guest services. Well he musta ordered 2 drinks, yes he did with 2 sea pass cards. Here it comes..... did they give you a reciept??? No. Okay charge comes off

What was so annoying was that they actually called casino bar. Like I'm lying or something.

Last day on ship, late at nite. I now have a $4 something charge from the pool bar. Really. Not worth my time to fight at guest services.

I would just mention that you might not feel $4.00 is worth fighting over but at the end of your cruise it you owed RCI $4.00 that was not secured with a credit card they would not have let you get off of the ship. Think about it.

And that would tend to confirm that the only reason they are printing receipts is for tips. I do follow the same practice as you when I get C&A covered drinks. One time a bartender printed a receipt anyway. I looked at him and said.... seriouly?.... He said.... oh yeah, sorry. And he ripped it up.

I always tip for my C&A covered drinks, either a dollar when I order at a bar, or twice a week if I get my drinks in the DL or CL.

On Royal ships, I get receipts about half the time. I find this irritating. On Celebrity, I have never gotten a receipt. Same company but two different approaches. This is one of several reasons that I like Celebrity over Royal.  Classier, less upsell, and less tip guilt-ing.

If you have a drink "package", you've already paid tip. You are under NO obligation to pay more.

I've been mentally scratching my head over this thread since first reading it earlier today.  Adding another $1 to a drink package tip is like tipping almost 30%.  I'm sure the bar staff appreciate it, though!

Sorry, I do not completely agree with this.  You have only tipped for the amount of the drink package.  If you then drink double that amount the bartenders/servers do not get any additional tips.
