Medical Marijuana

Recommended Posts

I’m a medical marijuana patient.  I smoke just 3 hits before going to bed.  Since there is no smoking in the cabins, I’m wondering how others have dealt with this problem.  I hate the edibles they take way to long to work and do not give me the pain relief I get from smoking.

You are not allowed to bring it on the ship. If you are found with marijuana (medical or not) you will be escorted off the ship at the next port.

Sadly, in the situation you described, it’s the same as if you smuggled the herb on illegally. Ironically, US airports in states that have yet to legalize medical are turning a blind eye and allowing travelers to bring their medicine across state lines.

As I’m sure you know, it’s relatively easy to sneak small amounts on the ship. If you were “caught” and especially if you produced documentation, I would be shocked if they did anything more than confiscate it.

The risk of using marijuana vs the detriment it could have on your health if you DON’T use it is one that you’ll have to decide for yourself and whether or not it’s worth the potential consequences.

The people in the balcony cabin just below me a few months ago seemed to have no problem getting it on board and using it.

Many people are willing to take a risk.   I remember reading a post a while back about people who got caught with it in Bermuda, missed the ship and were fined a boatload of money in fines.  (excuse the pun)   😉

Same thing happened to a passenger when we went to Nassau

"Legal" isn't universally legal.   Until it is, NCL will just say no.  And as someone else mentioned, Bermuda even has drug sniffing dogs that will come on board in port.  Other ports may do that.  You're not dealing with U.S. laws only.

No illegal drugs or other illegal substances including but not limited to medical marijuana are allowed onboard or may be utilized during a Norwegian Cruise Line vacation, including during transfers to and from ships, inside terminals, during shore excursions or at our private island. Illegal drugs or substances will be confiscated and appropriate action taken, which may include removal from the ship and involvement of appropriate authorities. In addition, foreign governments at Norwegian Cruise Line ports of call have strict laws that address drug possession. Guests found in violation of such laws are subject to arrest and prosecution by the foreign jurisdiction (and perhaps United States or other authorities as well) and may be prevented from re-boarding the ship.

Marijuana is illegal at the Federal level and it's prohibited on any ship (not just NCL). If you were lucky enough to get it on the ship and had any left over after the cruise and customs found it, you'd find yourself with all sorts of headaches and maybe an arrest for bring a prohibited item into the US.

I read an article about a guy who did exactly what you are asking about and ended up with criminal charges filed against him. If I can find the link, I'll post it but I'm coming up dry right now.

While not the specific story I had read, here's one about people getting arrested for bringing it on a ship https://www.floridatoday.com/story/news/crime/2018/01/10/party-ship-hits-high-seas-prosecutors-warn-revelers-pot-laws/1017200001/

Being legal in the state you have your Medical card and having said card means absolutely nothing in another state (even if they have a similar setup you need a card for that state) and certainly means nothing for inter-state travel or travel into federal owned lands or territories.

You can do as you want but be  aware of the consequences that come from it.  Many years ago (25+) ships were way easier for drugs... in fact on the last night there was always a note to flush what you could not bring into the US. I can't imagine the amount of different and quantity of stuff that must have been flushed that last night!

Yep. They catch people every week in Bermuda and fine them thousands of dollars.  If the dogs get a hit on your cabin they will open the safe if it is in the safe. Does not matter if it is medical marijuana. And they will arrest passengers who bring edibles.

That must be why I noticed way back in the day that the dolphins seemed to be smiling a lot.  🙂

It is a violation of Federal law to bring marijuana on board. If you bring it on board and are caught you are likely to be disembarked or arrested when you return to the home port. It doessn't matter that your state allows it, as far as the Federal Government is concerned it is illegal.

It's best that you cancel the cruise now (before the final payment due date) … or leave everything marijuana at home … or risk being thrown off ship at next port of call (you'll have to have your passport book AND throw out all remaining before you can step ashore).

Sorry, but as others have said, it's a big No-No on any cruise ships, and on many of the islands in the Caribbean.

Please don't risk yourself.

And this isn't to imply that I'm  opposed to weed smokers.   Old Willy is a poster child for it getting you to old age with a good attitude.  For me, in a few minutes, will sit and chill with some good bourbons...or maybe some other excellent adult beverages.   Weed smoking would probably be more healthy....except for the smoking part.  Gave up 3 packs a day many years ago.   Just ain't legal around here though.     Ok.  Back to regular scheduled programing.....

Weed is legal for recreational use in every port you will be in.    Find a dispensary get you fix and leave it ashore.

Just an idea.

If you absolutely have to smoke it and I know many who have to, I wouldn’t cruise if I were you.  My friends refuses to get on a cruise ship because of the strict cigarette rules there are.

No one HAS TO smoke anything.

Just fair warning to everyone, if see or notice in any way that you smoke anything anywhere on the ship other than products that are allowed, and do so in allowed areas, you will be reported to the appropriate person.  That should well be the how everyone deals with smoking violators.  You are of course entitled to your own opinions.

That sounds like a huge waste of law enforcement resources, so I assume they’re doing it for the profit motive (the thousands of dollars in fines you mention).

Would much rather they were using dogs to fight actual crime, like weapons and explosives.

(I know there are a lot of older and more conservative folks here, but hopefully people can at least recognize the fact that study after study reveals a lot more health benefits from marijuana than, say, scotch or vodka. The times they are a-changing.)

All this said: yeah, OP, legally you’re not even in the clear to fly with it, yet. I think you’re fine with CBD though (domestically).
