What’s the rudest thing you’ve ever had done to you on a cruise?

I’ll start with mine - months later I am still shaking my head....

 

We had dinner reservations at Teppanyaki.  While in line to be seated, we saw some rollcall friends just ahead of us who had just gotten seated.  There were two seats left at their table - I waved to them and went to grab one of the empty seats, and hubby told me to wait till we are seated by the hostess.  

 

There was another couple ahead of us, who I had actually checked with before getting in line, as it wasn’t clear whether or not they were in the Teppanyaki line.  They got ahead of us - so when it was their turn, they asked the hostess to seat them WITH OUR ROLL CALL FRIENDS, who they didn’t even know!!  It was very clear we knew each other and wanted to sit together and it was done deliberately, so if I were to have spoken up I suspect it would have been nasty.  And no, they didn’t know the roll call group.

 

So we got seated at a table with a group of 6 we didn’t know who would barely talk to us.

The rude thing is that you tried to get a seat ahead of people in line. At Teppanyaki meals are preped and served as tables fill. Maybe the people ahed of you had a reservation. Nothing rude bout going in line.

I think that sounds like a misunderstanding if anything.  For some reason they preferred that table even without knowing anyone.  I think if you would have spoken up, you could have got the table especially since you already had a conversation with the couple who got ahead of you in line.  Now, if you had spoken up and they refused to change and let you be with your friends, then I would agree that was rude.

Luckily I have never been treated rude by anyone on a cruise ship.  However I do see rude people who cut the line waiting for ice cream or force their way into the Posh elevator.  Also lots of drunks just acting like fools.

People cutting ahead at the bar. I always try to be cognizant of who was already there to make sure I don’t get served first and tell the bartender if someone was there before me, but so many people just jump right in. One time, 5 people jumped ahead of me, and that’s when I finally said something because it was ridiculous.

People that seem to leave their manners at home. So many times where I see poles speaking to staff like they’re beneath them. On the gem this older fella demanded a gelato they served was so polite. This guy was so rude I tapped him on the shoulder and mate you forgot something he was baffled. I said forgot your manners! Ugh rude people like that shouldn’t travel. It costs nothing to be polite and a good human

It didn't happen to me, but on our NYE cruise a few years ago I opened our cabin door and looked out to make sure that I wasn't going to walk in to somebody, and I saw a couple walking down the hallway side by side and run in to an elderly gentleman and almost knock him off his feet.  If there wouldn't have been a rail there he probably would have fallen.  I said out loud "I'm sorry Sir that there are such rude people that can't even step to one side to pass someone"  The couple just kept right on walking and didn't even check to see if he was ok.

 

On the same cruise, the bartender at the bar we were hanging at was told to reserve an area for some Suite guests on NYE.  They didn't show up until almost midnight, and then wasn't happy with the area that the bartender had to fight to keep open for them.  He wasn't allowed to put any signs up or anything, but was responsible for telling people they couldn't sit there all while having to serve drinks.  I felt really bad for him and the Suite guests tried to cut into our area so that they could see the show on the pool deck.

 

Some of the people on that cruise was the rudest that I have come across.

Kids and children running around the ship, not paying attention and bumping into people. I think i am invisible..where the hell the parents?! Its even more annoying when they walk into my travel partner walker

 

As someone that travels with someone with special needs, another thing i hate is people who run/push/shove their way into the an elevator and not giving anyone with special needs (like with a walker) some space to get on/off the elevator.

I use a walker.  On my trip on the Epic years ago a gentleman about ran me over to get in the elevator. I was waiting to go in so those on the elevator could get off.  I kept hearing on the boards about this but I had never had a problem.  It’s the only time it happened to me in all my cruises.

On one of our cruises, there were a few very rude people in scooters. I always go out of my way to accomodate anyone with mobility issues, but this particualr person thought the world owed her something. My husband was already in a line with several people behind him, he was next to be waited on, this person came from nowhere and rolled right into line in front of my husband so she could be "next" and rolled right over the top of foot.

So someone was in line in front of you and got seated in the proper order and THAT was rude?  It was rude of you to think you deserved special treatment and that you should have been allowed to be seated before people who were in lien in front of you.

I usually don't reply to topics such as this because I feel that the premise is to solely to call out the negative.  However.....I witnessed something on an cruise a couple of years ago that I think is worth recounting here.  On a crowded elevator the first day of the cruise, there was a passenger on the elevator who was hyperventilating and was obviously was petrified of elevators. Her friend was trying to calm her down when another passenger purposefully jumped up and down resulting in the jolting of the elevator.  The jumping obviously did nothing to negatively affect the safe operation of the elevator, but this already terrified woman seemed  to go into a panic attack and go faint.  I thought it was very rude (and cruel) of the man who jumped and I scolded him.  He scoffed as if I was butting in to where I did not belong. And then he shrugged it off as if it was his right to take advantage of a person who was already in distress. Talk about rude.

Please don't jump in front of people with strollers or people with disabilities who are in line for the elevator or buffet.  It can be dangerous with the elevator - I was the only one waiting for an elevator with my 4 who was walking and my 2 year old who was in a  stroller, and people joined us as I was waiting.  The people who got there after me jumped on the elevator before I could go, and my 4 year old had walked on by himself and I had to stand in the doorway to block the elevator and insist those people who jumped in front of me move to the side to let me through, since I was there first and my 4 year old couldn't go without me.    If you let the wheelchairs and strollers on first (especially if they were there first) people who are able bodied can probably get on around them, but we need a bit more room to maneuver into the elevator.

On Freedom of the Seas I was browsing at the sales tables in the promenade and someone ran over me with their scooter. She literally ran right between me and the table   I was startled and hurt and yelled ow and started to cry and the lovely Lady just reached over to grab the $10 deal and ignored me.

People who can't wait for you to get out of the elevator, before they force their way in to an already jam-packed area!!

Not only this, but people who jump in front of others to get on the elevator, especially the disabled, and those who push their way on an already full elevator yelling oh I’m sure there is room for 2 more, causing everyone to squish together so close they are standing on each other’s toes. What is it about cruise elevators that bring out rude annoying behavior.

A couple of years ago my DH and I were returning on a tender from an excursion, seas were rocky and the smell of the gas strong so we just wanted to get off. Big guy on our side of the tender stands and blocks the way allowing all the other people on the other side get off first. People behind us started to get vocal but he just stood there - he was "in charge".

Probably the rudest thing I saw was on my Anthem of the Seas cruise.  I know, it’s a Royal ship, but.....

 

There was a couple who I had seen before on the Allure of the Seas who had a little dog.  I love dogs.  I have had more than one, and currently have a chihuahua I just recently rescued.

 

However, this couple had their dog in one of those large baby strollers with the big wheels.  They wheeled that dog around the ship in that buggy and didn’t really care how much they clogged the aisles or the entrances/exits.  

 

I know on the Allure, they had some pushback from fellow cruisers.  Didn’t stop them from bringing the dog and the buggy again on the Anthem, though.  They even brought the dog to the MDR one night, buggy and all.  Of course, the dog was fed from the table, too.

 

Nor sure how they pulled it off, but there was NO WAY that was a service animal.

Two incidents; one on the Breakaway back in October where some pax with an "emotional support" dog who pooped all over the floor in the Casino!  To their credit, however, they were highly embarrassed and made every effort to clean up the mess until a crew member showed up to assist & close off the area until it could be thoroughly cleaned.

 

On the Gem a number of years go DW & I left our stuff at a table in the Garden Cafe while we went to get our food but when we returned found it occupied & our stuff pushed to the floor!  The folks didn't speak English & pretended they didn't know our stuff was there until we got a ship's officer who happened to speak their language.  I dunno what the officer said to them but they got REALLY red & embarrassed and, literally, fled the scene!

 

@DominicAUS That is a GREAT line!!!!  Can I please borrow it the next time I encounter rude behavior? lol

About 20 minutes into a show on the Jade a 20- something couple came in and stood behind us

(where we were there was sort of a ledge) dripping wet and still in their bathing suits from the pool/hot tub.

The proceeded to dance behind us and almost fell on top of us. The woman was clearly drunk.

It was nerve wracking as there was quite a bit of ship movement. Just when I was going to get  someone ( after about

15 min. of this behavior) they finally left.

I am now wondering where those with service animals are supposed to take their dogs to relieve themselves? A cruise ship seems like a horrible place for a pup.

On our last cruise (not NCL), I was sitting on my balcony reading a book when I suddenly felt something warm and wet on my foot.  At first glance, it appeared that bird poop landed on me, however upon further inspection, it was snot-filling sputum.  Someone from a balcony above us spit a chuck of phlegm overboard, and it landed inside my balcony on my foot.  I was so grossed out!  Couldn't stop cleaning my foot and flip-flop with the Clorox wipes I brought.

It's a shame the arrow system is needed.  My entire life it was understood people need to get off an elevator before others get on.  Now it's like all common sense is out the window.
