Rhodes

A short walk from where you are docked is the Walled City of Rhodes.

It has lots of history to it and also shops, and restaurants and a fun place to wander around.

There is a historic synagogue there along with other places to visit.

I highly recommend it.

Keith

I agree with Keith. There's plenty to see just by walking off the ship. You can explore as much as you like with ease. There are no giant staircases although the streets do slope upwards from the pier.

If you want to go further afield a visit to the Temple of Athena at Lindos is wonderful  but be aware there are hundreds of stairs from the pretty village to the cliff top temple. They are very steep and there are no handrails.

Looks amazing. No need for a tour?

You don't need a tour but do be sure to look up some info from a guide book so you'll have an idea of what to see and do. There is a castle/stronghold of the Knights Templar well worth visiting inside (entrance fee) and also an archaeological museum that is housed in the old Templar hospital.

I had found a tour on trip advisor that did Both lindos and Rhodes old town for $35 per person, but they aren’t operating when we go in November as it is slows season. So it looks like walking may be our best bet. Maybe a rick Steve’s audio tour.

Could you post a link to that tour? TIA

We didn't have tours booked either because we read a lot of info on what to do on your own. And there were many sites to visit and a lot of walking to do.

The Old Town is the biggest medieval city in Europe and there are a lot of things to explore like the Archaeological Museum, walk on top of the walls, visit the Palace of the Grand Master of he Knights, wander around the little alleways, buy something from the shops, eat a local dish and stay away from the hot sun 🙂

Short walk into walled city from the dock. We purchased a combo ticket to tour the Grand Masters Palace and Archeology Museum. The combo ticket was inexpensive. We got off the ship early and made the walk to the Grand Masters Palace. We purchased the combo ticket there. We then walked to the Archeological Museum. They were self guided tours and we enjoyed them. If something was not interesting we just walked by.

After the museum tour we walked around the extensive shopping district. It was a very enjoyable day.

My lasting memory of Rhodes ........... Cats.

Stray cats everywhere!!

We found many of the eateries inside the old town walls were a bit touristy and pushy for your custom.

After a short walk from the ship to outside the old town wall we came across the Rhodes Yachting Club Cafe.

Very welcoming local eatery/bar with excellent food and drink ......... and of course cats.

Like others have said, Rhodes is so easy. There was a tourist booth with great maps and advice right in front of the Marine Gate. The highlights for us were the Palace of the Grand Masters and the Archaeology Museum. BTW- these were not the Templars, but the Knights of St. John- the Hospitallers. We just finished a cruise where we visited Malta, Rhodes and then Akko in Israel- all Knights of St. John. The Archaeology museum is housed in their old hospital!

The city is so easy to navigate and lots of great shops and atmosphere.

We took a tour from Rhodes Taxi Tours- it was the East Coast of Rhodes with Jewish related sites.. the 5 hour tour was 225 euros for 4 of us... you can see a bit of the island and also enjoy the historic city just by the port,( conveninent our ship)  also that way.
