Oasis of the Seas Arriving Real Early

Currently on Oasis as we are coming in hot to Miami 12 hours early. Medical emergency in early hours this morning caused Captain to significantly speed us up today for benefit of affected passenger. We’ve maintain average speed of 23 knots most of the day so it’s been a little breezy by the pool. Bad news for everyone else is that shops & casino will have to close at 6:30 PM. This will save me a few $$ as wife will have to retire early from the slot machines. Prayers for the sick passenger.

Don’t know why they didn’t airlift the passenger . It has been done before on the grandeur of the sea in 2017.

disrupted the vacation of over 5,000 return home 12 hours early and yet you cannot get off the ship .
Definitely more to this story than the captain has disclosed .

Ship has been speeding and rocking since last night .. very windy and chilly all day . Not the relaxing day at sea we were supposed to have .
coast guard helicopters have done mid air medical evacuations this is VERY unusual

I

If you were the affected passenger or it was one of your family members I think you would not be complaining about the disruption of your cruise. I'm sure the medical staff onboard conferred carefully with the medical staff on land and  the Captain to determine what was in the best interest of the sick passenger.

I am not saying the “ affected “ passenger should not get the needed medical care.  Hoping they have a speedy recovery .  Heard some mention of a crew member  not passenger so RCCL is responsible and would what’s BEST for them .  Air lifting passengers is the norm EVEN if US Coast guard gets involved .

25 grand for an airlift. Usually not covered by insurance. Found this out from fiancé of first officer on Explorer on a Canada run several years ago. Full speed into Halifax. Guy was dead in the dining room. They got him back and he was awake and waving good bye when they wheeled him off. Watched from balcony.

Airlifting passengers is the last resort and not at all the norm.  It’s dangerous for the chopper pilots and can put the ship in danger.  It is a last resort, life and death situation only.

I wonder if they give the pax an option, in case they do have medical evacuation insurance up to 100k limit.  I buy these sort of health insurance plans but no idea how hard it would be to actually get covered. Would someone from the ship call insurance company and verify coverage?  It's not something easy to put on a charge card and seek reimbursement later.   If seriously sick I'd rather be tended too sooner than later.

Good lord - do many passengers second guess the captain and medical professionals?  And during the Christmas season yet.

We call them “armchair Captains”.

We were on the Harmony for the Hurricane Dorian cruise.  Our 7 days turned into an 11 day cruise, which was fine by me!!!  But with a Cat 5 hurricane sitting between us and the US you should have heard all the “solutions” being offered by some passengers!

It was quite amusing to say the least...

The ship's personnel must have the patience of angels - I'd be taking names and helping them disembark, ah, very very quickly - at a port of my choosing.

I get being frustrated by change of plans, but, I agree with the poster who said 'put yourself in that situation'.  I applaud any corporate entity that puts the health and welfare of its clients and staff first - even if it's 'inconvenient'.

Not all medical emergencies are suitable for an airlift.

Also, if a little speed gets the ship in to a port, its a lot safer than an airlift. Airlifts are only used if there are no other options, or if the situation warrants (the passenger needs to get to shore quicker than the ship can get there).

Sorry you have been so inconvenienced as the result of this passenger's inconsiderate illness combined with Mother Natures will with the weather!  Certainly you must be owed some sort of compensation for your inconvenience and early return. 😒

And BTW, how long have you served as Captain of a vessel at sea to be so knowledgeable and in position to second guess his decisions?

I’m onboard and the early arrival has not disrupted my cruise. I’m still having a great time. The shows are ongoing tonight - karaoke, frozen in time, Cats, comedians, Jazz on 4, etc...

Praying for the best outcome for the guest impacted by the medical emergency.

Have you arrived in Miami yet?

Airlifts are unusual and last resort. And an airlift would mean that you would have to divert and sail close to land (take you off course heading home). Spend an hour or more at limited speed while the Coast Guard rescue personnel are onboard and assess the patient. Then lift the passenger and family members up into a helicopter. So, rather than being early into port, you would have been late into port making you miss your flight. Better?
