dallasdan Posted December 30, 2019 #1 Share Posted December 30, 2019 My BFF's Wife is a heavy smoker. I have read on a couple of reviews that ship doesn't allow smoking until after she sets sail. If this is true, this will be a big issue for our group on having to wait several hours to smoke.

bury me at sea Posted December 30, 2019 #3 Share Posted December 30, 2019 Go to the casino. It won't be open for games yet, but the doors will be opened and there are designated smoking sections.
Rare Jamman54 Posted December 30, 2019 #4 Share Posted December 30, 2019 Many times smoking is not allowed until later on embarkation day is because the ship is being refueled. 😎
dallasdan Posted December 30, 2019 Author #5 Share Posted December 30, 2019 Normally, she goes to the casino bar and smokes on Embarkation day. However, I have read on 2 different reviews that it wasn't allowed anywhere on the ship prior to sail away.

That is bad news that I haven't yet encountered, though I haven't cruised on that class of ship. Smoking in the designated outdoor areas isn't allowed because the ship is taking on fuel. dallasdan Posted December 30, 2019 Author #7 Share Posted December 30, 2019 Wasn't a problem when we sailed on the Vista last year out of Galveston. I am wondering if this was only an issue on the first couple of cruises. I can only imagine the uproar from the smokers at guest services.
Garth2 Posted December 30, 2019 #8 Share Posted December 30, 2019 If you choose to board late in the boarding process, there's a good chance the refueling will be complete and you will be able to smoke in the designated area.
sanmarcosman Posted December 30, 2019 #9 Share Posted December 30, 2019 (edited) OP, I agree with Garth. If I was still a smoker I would book the last arrival slot and board knowing I have a better chance of being able to smoke without delay. I remember what it's like. It's up to the smoker to make adjustments and not Carnival to change an announced procedure. And yes, you read correctly from the reviews you have read. Carnival Panorama does not permit any smoking until have fueling and the fuel barge has left the side of the ship. dallasdan Posted December 30, 2019 Author #10 Share Posted December 30, 2019 With us staying at Queen Mary next door I am not sure how late she will want to wait outside. Plus we are platinum and normally board early. I agree with you about the smoker having to make adjustments. I am not a smoker and I am glad there designated smoking areas. But, as the unofficial cruise director of our group, I try and find out everything about a ship, ports, policies, etc.. prior to sailing.
Sun4Me2Please Posted December 30, 2019 #11 Share Posted December 30, 2019 I had read that there is no smoking at the Casino during embarkation as this is where you enter on the Panorama. So once the ship is done with fueling it should be a non issue. Most times that process is done by early afternoon.
dallasdan Posted December 30, 2019 Author #12 Share Posted December 30, 2019 Is the no smoking during refueling only apply to the casino. Will she be able to smoke outside in the designated smoking areas?

If she's that reliant on smoking, a couple of nicotine patches while boarding should do the trick until she can light up. dallasdan Posted December 30, 2019 Author #14 Share Posted December 30, 2019 I have sailed out of Long Beach and other ports before and I don't remember this being a policy. Granted I don't smoke so I don't always pay attention. But we have been on 6 or 7 cruises together and I don't remember her complaining. Is this a new policy in Long Beach? It's not a new policy for any ship while its being refueled. Either you missed it, the ship wasn't being refueled or she wasn't Jonesing it before the ban during refueling was lifted. The entire ship is no smoking during the fueling process PERIOD

One of the reasons the casino isn't available for smoking, besides refueling, during embarkation on the Panorama is because everyone enters the ship into the casino instead of the lobby because of the walkway from the dome. Long Beach doesn't usually have ships this big and apparently the bridge over had to be somewhat modified.

crzndeb Posted December 30, 2019 #20 Share Posted December 30, 2019 The only other alternative, is she can keep going off the ship if she really needs a smoke. However, going up those ramps is hard enough for non smokers, let alone those who smoke. I would definitely go with gum or patches, like others suggested.
sanmarcosman Posted December 30, 2019 #21 Share Posted December 30, 2019 This begs the question what does your BFF's wife do (assuming she is flying to California ) and can't smoke on the plane for x number of hours? She could do the same for the ship.
1025cruise Posted December 30, 2019 #22 Share Posted December 30, 2019 The Panorama is unique in this situation. During refueling, no outdoor smoking is permitted. This would normally leave the only smoking area in the casino. Unfortunately, due to the way Long Beach is configured, boarding needs to take place in front of the casino, so it is true that until refueling is complete, there is no smoking anywhere on the Panorama.
James4me Posted December 31, 2019 #23 Share Posted December 31, 2019 I’m so done with smoking, as of the New Year my newest accessory will be the nicotine patch. I’ve smoked for 30 years. I need back surgery on March 5 and have a cruise on the Panorama in June.

So am I safe in assuming this isn't the case on Vista class ships in general?
