We made sure we saved enough money for "many other things while aboard the ship."

Wonder how much more you could have had for "many other things while aboard the ship" if you had not had to obtain a tux?

been there , did that, on our Panama canal cruise when I was "almost" turned away from a mdr for having on a short sleeve TB silk shirt

I had a fellow passenger at a random table get totally snotty about my Tommy Bahama silk shirt. He was wearing a J. C. Penney (or similar) "regular" button down shirt. His shirt was likely in the $30 range. The TB was in the $130 range. It was not a formal night. What a jerk.

I have worked the the apparel business for 40 years. I have worked worked for high end as well as discount retailers. I can tell you first hand if you pulled all of the labels out the average person wouldn't be able to tell the difference between the $130 Tommy and the $30 knock off. Only the person wearing it knows the label.

The person wearing it (me) knew the label and the retail price. I didn't pay anywhere near the label price.  Gotta be a wise shopper... 😎

Buy a long sleeve Guayaberas

Hmm, my two are short sleeved.  Perhaps I need to think about a long sleeved one just for a change.  I have never had a problem with the short sleeved ones after wearing them for several years now.

Considering today's situation with the cruising industry sales I doubt if they would be willing to turn anyone away no matter how they were dressed. It'll be hard enough to get them on the ship to begin with.....at least for the foreseeable future.

Seeing pax dressed up on formal night can be enjoyable to some but not others.  So when some (many?) immediately after dinner change into their normal cruising clothing, the feeling is fleeting.  I do agree that one purpose is to sell photos.  Second comment is what do you do with all these photos from the cruise ship, frame them and hang them or put them in a drawer not to be seen again.

Those who immediately change tend to migrate to the upper decks. Those who stay in the Atrium area and the lower deck bars tend to stay dressed up.
