Cancelling Cruises because of the C word

Pertinent extract

An email from Roger Frizzell, Carnival’s chief communications officer, confirmed that the cancellation policy was “adopted by all of our North American brands,” as well as their P&O and Cunard cruise lines.

Contacted P&O (UK) - through my travel agent  - but P&O UK are not aware of any update to their cancellation policy.

Hoping that the reason is that the info has not yet filtered to the UK yet, not that the revised policy to include P&O and Cunard only applies to North American Passengers.

We shall see.

When the first ship comes back to Southampton carrying even 1 passenger or crew with symptoms and is anchored off the IOW and not allowed to dock... That's when it will really hit home and something will have to be done...

Andy

perhaps we designate the IoW as a quarantine centre, I can think of worse places to spend 14 days

Not cruise, but travel related.  Just had an email from the Sofia Opera House that they're cancelling all shows due to Coronavirus now in Bulgaria.  Well, that's our Friday night at the Opera blown out.  ☹️

They are however allowing people to either exchange tickets for future shows, or get a full refund.  PandO take note.

Do Wetherspoons have any pubs in Sofia? 🍺

Maybe have some staff training fascilities?

Just contacted TA re our upcoming cruise on Aurora towards the end of April. Have been told that if we cancel 56 to 42 days before the cruise we will get a 40% refund. We have until the end of the week to make a decision.

That's a very interesting link, and seems very unambiguous.  I can't see how P&O can continue with their current position regarding refunds, when their parent company are promoting an entirely different position.

Earlier in this thread, at least one poster was referring to big price drops of P&O cruises which, due to the very high levels of cancellations, wouldn’t have surprised me. I also received a marketing email from P&O’s biggest UK cruise specialist the other day referring to big price drops. However, having spent some time looking at these ‘offers’ (and also the cruises we are booked on) I cannot see any really cheap cruises. Many are Saver fares, so if you factor in the loss of OBC that many of us received with Select fares the ‘saving’ isn’t worth the risk of getting a cabin in a poor location - so situation normal. I also looked at the price per night for balcony cabins and suites of these ‘offers’ and they are no better than we usually achieve by booking at launch. Am I missing something or are the bargains on inside cabins, which nobody wants at present for fear of being confined to one?

My cruise in May on the Arcadia to Canaries has plummeted.

Circa £950 for 16 night in a balcony cabin.

I reckon it could be cancelled either due to the virus by the govt, but also a lack of passengers. (Same reason)

I am just going to sit and wait either way having paid in full.

I will go if the cruise goes ahead come what may.

I fully understand others who for whatever reason choose to do otherwise

On the other thread regarding Cirona virus, there is a link to an email from Carnival, saying that all Carnival brands will allow you to cancel, the cruise fare then to be used against a future cruise.  Worth reading.

I very much doubt they'd cancel a cruise due to low numbers.

Yes but a Drs. letter is required stating that you would be at risk and unable to travel due to the virus.

Yes we are the same, because if the cases soar as it looks like, and also with North America offering cancellation and Future Credit Credit up to 48 hours before sailing, then that is what we will do.

If our cruise is cancelled or the itinery is vastly changed, then one would expect a full refund,  in those circumstances a future credit would not be acceptable.

My advise  wait! and wait!

A bargain at £950pp but as a saver fare that gives you no room for changing (at time of typing - but give it an hour or two?) and no doubt offered so they can keep your money. I might still be tempted but perhaps only a few days before cruising, certainly worth watching rather than booking at present.

That’s just their normal terms, nothing to see here.

For what it's worth, this is now showing on MSC US site https://www.msccruisesusa.com/en-us/Cruise-Deals/Cruise-Assurance-Program.aspx

Nothing on the MSC  UK site as yet..... Hopefully something will happen for the UK soon for both lines
