I Pick or They Pick My Cabin

Can someone explain the logic behind a gty cabin being less expensive than if I chose one. I'm looking at Empress in December and it shows Jr. Suites less expensive if I select the cabin vs they chose one for me.

I have seen that a lot lately where the guarantee is MORE than picking one yourself.  Makes no sense to me

Def book the Junior suite.  If you choose a guarantee, you get what is available.   Pick a nice well located JS.  If prices go down, move up.  Hope we can all cruise again!

There is no discount for selecting a guaranty cabin, there is an UP CHARGE for the privilege of choosing your own.

Airlines have been doing this for a while.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding you but what we are seeing is a higher charge for letting them pick our cabin. It's cheaper often lately to pick your cabin. That's why the op is asking.

 

I got one I'm booking the only inside choices were gtys which supposedly I cant book as a solo and pr cabins. No other insides offered to me. I didnt try the gty since I like pr cabins. But odd only gty or pr.

I have seen what you are referring to only once. Maybe just the sailings I have watched???? Could be it is the the type and length of the ones I have booked.?????

 

All others have the guarantee as the lesser cost, sometimes a large difference.

 

Just this last sailing we booked had a balcony cabin for $900 odd dollars, and the "you select" was $1400 and up.

We always pick our own.  It's worth the cost to get the location we want.  Not all cabins are equal in terms of location.  When they can pick, they can leave the more disireable cabins for those willing to pay for it and put those that don't into locations that don't sell as easily.

But in the OPs case it's actually cheaper to pick their own cabin vs. taking the guarantee.  I believe that is what they're questioning.

Okay, reread it.  They actually said in the first sentence that a gty is cheaper vs them picking their own which is the norm. They then said the opposite in their last sentence.

Actually, both of my sentences say the same thing. I was asking why it is less expensive for me to select a cabin vs the guarantee category.

it could actually be due to the deck location. 
 

When you select to CHOOSE your own you could actually be seeing all the unassigned cabins from the lower cheaper rates all the way up to the highest upper rates for your type (INT, OV, BAL, STE)
 

When you select “CHOOSE FOR ME” the computer may be calculating Total unassigned cabins minus already GTY bookings.  So it is already eliminating in the background X amount of cabins that expect to be assigned later.  If it thinks 50% of those available cabins are going to be assigned it may be eliminating the cheaper ones first.

I have often considered a GTY CABIN but will always check the CHOOSE MY OWN first just to see what is available.   If the options are not great, then I may just go ahead and select my own, or consider the next type up.

I have a suite GTY next April on Harmony for the transatlantic. smallest cabin i would be assigned is a JS, and I am fine with the location of any of those.  And it is possible to get a larger cabin.  7 years ago did a Suite GTY for Alaska and ended up with a Grand Suite.  For Harmony- two people with the suite GTY was $3100 with my diamond and casino discount.  at the time, there were no JS to select on your own- if you clicked on it, only GS were displayed.  There are several online now, but we are almost 300 days out.

I have seen the "we pick your cabin" more expensive than "you pick your cabin" on quite a few cruises lately.  As others have said, there is often no rhyme or reason to RC's pricing.  I just chuckle and pick my cabin.

Yes, no, and only partly.

 

IT are responsible to maintaining the algorithms that move prices based on enquiries, bookings, days to departure (and possibly phases of the moon too).

Maybe the fine print is different... pick your own cabin at a lower price but the deposit is non refundable whereas maybe the GTY room have refundable deposit? Maybe theres something different in the terms.
