Hawaii In March from LA

  We are thinking of doing the 15 day on the Grand In March 2022 ... just wondering if the seas tend to be rough  ... we have 5 seas days there and sea days back.... th you for any help

The seas can be rough at times-- very unpredictable though. It's more that it can also be colder on the first 3 days and last 3 days at sea-- uncomfortable to be in the pool or sunbathe outside cold. Unless you have a ton of time or really enjoy a bunch of sea days I think Hawaiian vacations are much better done flying to the islands and staying there.

The seas can be rough any time, or any place...they are not predictable more than a couple of days ahead of schedule. If you have an issue with rough seas, you need to be prepared every time you get on a ship.

In my opinion,  you are better off,  figuring you WILL have some rough sailing.   🙂    If you gravitate to  claims-  it was smooth-  because it makes you feel better-  it means NOTHING.  🙂   And certainly has no predictability of what your sailing encounters.

Well put. People seem to only want to sail calm seas, like it is expected to always have calm seas. People forget you are on a ship, on the ocean, and the ocean moves. As you and I both said, you must plan for the possibility of rough seas every time you are on a ship.

What does "rough seas" mean? We did this cruise on the Star in late February this year and I guess you could call a couple of the days rough, but because of the stabilizers, you hardly even notice other that the pools were going nuts. The kids on the cruise loved it, they thought it was a wave pool.

We are booking same, March 2022 outta LA.  My first time doing the Long trek

for hawaii.  Will be Vip casino comp, and too good to pass up.

I was also wondering about the seas.... 5 days each way will be the Longest

weve ever done. 

Figure we will either Luv it, or one & done.

They do seem to know what they're doing though-- going to be lots of time for the casino on those sea days to help even out the difference in fare 😉

once were in the islands?  Is casino closed for Hawaii days?  ( not that I would care)

No, just like virtually all ports...the casino is closed while in port, and opens a certain time after sailing...like 30 or 60 minutes.

Thanks for info.  Just looking at the Hours ship is in Port, 7am -11pm on island days..... pretty certain casino will remain closed. Thats fine.

talking with friends who live there... March is their WET & windy month.

Of course it could be different next year?

They've already had a couple weeks of flooding,

I tell ya, makes me wish we could book April instead.

Mark Twain (who enjoyed visiting Maui) was given credit for saying "If you don't like the weather, wait five minutes".  No matter who said it though, the saying is true at least on Maui.  There is also a saying that "No rain, no rainbows".  It can rain gently or heavily and at any time of year, with clouds yielding to sunshine at a moment's notice.  Our resorts and shops, restaurants and such are used to this and are geared for keeping their guests comfortable and safe.  Just enjoy!!

Oh its not the Land portion I'm concerned about.

Its the 5 days each way in the ocean that may be storming.

That could be true as you sail from the West Coast any time between October and March. Its winter, after all. It looks like you live here...you already knew that. Your friends in Hawaii wouldn't absolutely know that. Weather in California is often quite different than Hawaii.

13 years ago we flew to Hawaii and cruised back in May. Had no idea about the weather. We were in for a surprise on those 5 days. On the third day out it started to get really cool on the lido deck. Wore sweatshirts, sweaters or windbreakers outside. Warmed up as we approached the west coast.The seas were not very rough but you could feel the movement of the ship. We are heading back to Hawaii in February of 2022. Expecting the rough seas and cool weather both ways. Hoping for some warm outside lounging this trip.

We'll be sailing May 2023 from Hawaii to Vancouver and have no concern/care about the weather. I'll enjoy being onboard for this itinerary come what may !!!

If you are concerned about rough seas,  I would recommend taking Meclizine. It is the medicine in non drowsy Bonine. You don't need a prescription for it anymore, but the pharmacist will have it behind the counter. (A lot Cheaper than buying Bonine, $10/16 tablets). I take it every  night, starting the night before the cruise. I have never been seasick, even in when it was rough enough to cancel the shows. In the 6 times we have done this cruise, once it was as calm as sailing in a bath tub going to Hawaii, and rough enough to cancel shows coming back, and every other time was a mix. We usually go in February. Bob voyage!
