If you want to put a smile to your face on this sad Remembrance Day, there were some lives saved and lives changed forever.  Remember there were 7,000 people that were “rescued” and landed in a little town in Newfoundland.

Gander welcomed them, fed them and welcomed them.

Eventually they made a musical locally and never expected the success they got.  Here’s a little excerpt to make everyone smile on this somber day.

A friend, who lives in NJ, was going surfing on the morning of 9/11.  He happened to see a friend who was due to work but decided to take a day off and go with my friend as it was such a beautiful day.  They got their board and headed off.  They saw the flames on the horizon and only later learnt the dreadful news.  The friend worked in the WTC on one of the highest floors.  Had he gone to work that day he would likely not have survived.

thanks Roy.

my favourite is the original one where the Mayor and locals performed.  I couldn’t find it sadly.

I really admire the fortitude of the Newfoundlanders who deal with everything they do and their open hearts that welcome and care for others.

The population of that town literally doubled if not more and seriously when the radio came on and everyone heard, they were cooking, making sandwiches and getting ready to welcome everyone.  While some had sleep in the schools, etc., there wasn’t enough room and many of the locals took people into their homes.

We had a few people here and helped but nothing compared to Gander.  It’s truly a moving story to me on what people can do for each other ❤️

I just had an email from my DD in Gander and she said they have a ceremony commemorating 9/11 every year.  Today's had to be cancelled as the weather is bad, and it was intended to be outdoors.  But I'm sure a lot of people are remembering.

Thanks for the heads-up.  Somehow, Gander seems to often get nice weather about this time but you never know.

This is the powerful Clydesdale commercial that only aired once in commemoration of those lost on 9/11.  Watching it again brought tears to my eyes.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LyP0JsyvYnA#action=share

This has always been my favorite Clydesdale commercial.  Thank you so much for posting it today.

DH retired from Anheuser-Busch two weeks after the company was taken over by In-Bev, based in Belgium.  That company was known for cutting employees and costs to the bone.  So when the marketing department of the new company, called "AB In-Bev", thought it would be a sound business decision to eliminate the Clydesdales Super Bowl commercials there was a huge outcry from Americans.  I'm so glad that decision was reversed!

was  Captain Jack ,  Master  of the 'old'

Noordam on that cruise?

I don't have first hand info but found a CC post from a few years ago referencing the Noordam in 2001 and that it was not Capt Jack.

At Sea Pacific
Oosterdam destination unknown at this time but on the map she appears to be at Balboa

Balboa Panama
Koningsdam

..................................

Hi Rich, just a heads up, both Oosterdam and Koningsdam are at the Fuerte Amador anchorage and they are there along with Grand Princess and Carnival Miracle. As a matter of fact, AIS currently shows Grand Princess Tender #19 in the near vicinity of Koningsdam so there might be some more (internal) crew transfer taking place. The port of Fuerte Amador is located right at the Pacific Entrance to the Panama Canal. It is made up of a man-made one-mile causeway which extends into the Pacific Ocean and connects the four small islands of Culebra, Flamenco, Perico and Naos. The tender dock is inside the Flamenco Yacht Club (That's Panama City's skyline in the background in the pic)

In order to reach the Port of Balboa, Panama, a ship needs to cross under the very large Bridge of the Americas. Fuerte Amador, Panama is a semi-regular tender stop for HAL ships on northbound (Pacific to Atlantic/Caribbean Sea) transits. Some of the posters here might have been there..........

Just checked and MT now shows both Oosterdam and Koningsdam at the Pacific Anchorage of Panama. It seems like both ships have made the run from Puerto Arenas to Balboa at least once in the last month or so.

As far as Fuerte Amador. I had the opportunity to visit there on a cruise ship once and have a driver waiting to take me to my old stomping grounds across the isthmus. A very long time between visits and major changes (down hill) for the area. I did get to see the construction of the new locks, and the announcer welcomed me back to Panama over the PA system (my guide knew the announcer). It was a great visit all together.

Which is the Fuerte Amador anchorage. I've just never seen them go under the Bridge to Balboa propper. You must have been in the military stationed in Panama

Fuerte Amador has a very nice marina but, besides a couple of restaurants, there ain't a heck of a lot do to there except get transportation to Panama City 😉 While working that tender dock once, we got caught in the mother of all rain storms; it was raining horizontally 🙂

Rich and Roy, thank you for the Daily.

9/11 is such a somber day and I don’t think anyone will forget where they were when it happened. I’ll say extra prayers for all of our first responders today. They are always called to duty in the worst of circumstances. It takes remarkable people to put their lives on the line like that.

I was stationed there for 18 months and got soaked in those rain storms many times. Still lots of good memories and I was glad to have an opportunity to visit there again.

On such a somber day there were a few rays of sunshine that came my way.   First, the FCC from my cruise cancelled in March finally posted.  One down, one to go.

Second, the roofer came out.  They caulked up the seam where the roof of the main level meets the wall of the upper level.  They are wondering if it was a weakness in the siding, which is totally possible.  We are going to do the siding anyways and they said they'd be able to tell when they took the old siding off.  So, Sunday's rain shouldn't come in the house.

Tonight's food porn is from Montreal - smoked meat sandwiches and poutine.

Good Evening.

I have spent the day reflecting on 911 and the forest fires in California, Oregon, and Washington.

It is Friday, so fish is on the menu tonight.  A lovely fillet of sockeye.

Tonight's photo was taken in 2013 somewhere in the Caribbean.
