TravelerThom Posted September 24, 2020 #41 Share Posted September 24, 2020 49 minutes ago, John&LaLa said: Has this ship ever sunk? Not a totally dumb question. The principal ferry on Lake Tanganyika was laid down as “Graf von Goetzon” by Meyer Werft in Papenburg Germany 1913, disassembled and shipped in pieces via Dar es Salaam to Central Africa. After just over a year of service it was sunk (scuttled) during WW I. After being raised from the bottom in the 1920s it commenced ferry service in 1927 as the “MV Liemba” and is still in service. I have been on a somewhat similar much older boat on Lake Titicaca. The Yavari was laid down in England in 1860, disassembled and shipped to Titicaca where it was reassembled and commenced service in 1862. Yavari is still sailing as a museum, but as far as I know it has never sunk.
