We were in Bora Bora in December 2017, so this is a bit of a cheat. We were on the Maasdam and had the most wonderful cruise round trip from Sydney to Tahiti and the Pacific islands. The best cruise we ever had. Just wanted to share some photos. The man playing the ukelele was steering the boat with his feet!

Two years ago today we docked at Celukan Bawang, Bali.  Crew families were there for their loved ones.  We toured the NE part of Bali, Indonesia.  DH delights in researching the local beer.  Our evening EXC In-Depth talk was about the volcano Krakatoa.

In 2016 the Maasdam stopped in Scarborough Tobago on our way to Rio.

Probolingo, Java, Indonesia was a gem of a remote tender port.  Our tour visited a Chinese temple, the Red Church, Museum, Batik experience, Marketplace, and meeting teen schoolboys in a park.  I was glad that we had brought postcards and a brochure of our hometown to give them. 

Our evening Maasdam EXC In-Depth talk tried to explain the measuring of the tropics.

A year ago today we were on the Volendam doing the Grand South America Adventure.  Our port today was San Antonio and we did an excellent private tour to Santiago, Chile.  Lots of art work all over the city.  They had been having violent demonstrations/protests off and on around the city/country on previous days and there was a building in the center of the city that drawings of eyes taped in the windows.  Our guide said this was because the police were using rubber bullets for crowd control and had blinded several people.  We did not see any protests when we were there but one of the crew members from the ship had her cellphone grabbed out of her hand in the center city market area.

At 3:02 PM local time I stepped onto Antarctica at the Chilean naval base at Waterboat Point, continent number seven. The adult gentoo penguin were all around on nests of pebbles, most with fluffy little chicks, a few with eggs, and a few larger chicks which already had black feathers. Great to observe them, most chicks just sleeping, a few were fed.

 

Someone mentioned that a couple of chicks can make it look like the adult is wearing fluffy slippers:

We visited St. Lucia four years ago.

 

 

We just walked in the port area and stayed aboard for the day.

 

Sailing past the Pitons I vied for a view...

 

while Lori had a better idea...wait for it to come to her.

 

And it did..

One year ago we zodiaced near Pléneau Island at the south side of the Lemaire Channel in Antartica.

 

 

We had penguins on our mind, the snow pattern looked like one.

 

We were of no interest to the crabeater seals.

Surabaya, Java, Indonesia gave us an enthusiastic welcome in 2019.  More crew families were happy.  We took a taxi to explore the cigarette factory visitor center and met more girls wanting photographs.  I enjoyed a good cup of "java."  Great shopping in the terminal.  The Maasdam's evening EXC In-Depth talk was about the unique Wayang Theater of Indonesia.

January 24, 2020. We received a poor welcome from a Weddell seal to Neko Harbor, the beast did not move a muscle.

Fog had delayed our landing. We gained 300' climbing from shore, the Quest disappeared from view shortly after I took this photo.

 

These gentoo penguins nested well away from shore.

 

This is Mrs. Whogo's photo of my polar plunge. You're probably thinking that she should have pictured me in midair, but I was in the icy water much less time than it took to drop a couple of feet into the water.

January 24, 2020 - Volendam Grand South America Adventure - Isla Robinson Crusoe, Chile.  Getting off the tender was rather challenging at the pier.  Very cute island with friendly people.

I am thoroughly enjoying so many great adventures here, especially the Antarctic expedition.  Thank you, everyone.

 

Two years ago today, the Maasdam docked at Semarang, Java, Indonesia.  Since we had already visited Borobudur, we toured the Sam Poo Kong Temple.  I was impressed by the bas relief mural about Chinese explorer Zheng He.  Ginger tea and snacks were served at an interesting resort.  The Batik workshop was fascinating to me.  More crew were happy to see their families, especially one of our room stewards.

Our evening EXC In-Depth talk "Images of a Naturalist" was the finest photos by one of our onboard scientists.

Such exotic ports! Someday. . . . Meanwhile 2 years ago, we were in the Barbados where we did a snorkelling tour and swam with the turtles.

I had been looking forward to our visit there in 2019 but Oceania changed our itinerary so that we had 2 days at Easter Island instead of 1. It does look like a nice place but I'm glad we had the 2 days to explore Easter Island instead.
