From the CDC (https://www.cdc.gov/nceh/vsp/pub/norovirus/norovirus.htm.  I couldn't find the number of deaths.

 

From 2008 to 2014, 74 million passengers sailed on cruise ships in the Vessel Sanitation Program’s jurisdiction. Only 129,678 passengers met the program’s case definition for acute gastrointestinal illness and only a small proportion of those cases (1 in 10) were part of a norovirus outbreak.

Provided that the virus doesn't mutate to the point that the antibodies developed by the vaccine is not as effective.  There are already variants that show very little response to the vaccines.  The more it mutates the greater the risk that such variants will result.

I don't think it's that simple due to severity of the disease and the ease with which it is spread.  I also don't think that the cruise lines would take that risk since another outbreak would be the end of things for them.  The cruiselines have to have an agreement with ports that would accept any passengers that get sick during the cruise, and that might be hard to arrange if no one is wearing a mask.  At least until we get to the point where everyone is vaccinated and the virus is no longer spreadking.

Several of us tuned into the Live videos posted by passengers on the Diamond We asked questions of them & followed their 2 weeks on the Dia in Yokohama. And then Dave & Sally while in hospital  in Japan. 
 

wear a mask, get vaccinated, follow health requirement & don’t be in such a rush to get on a ship.

Where in Florida?

 

Like much of the country the number of cases in Florida has started to rise again (up 6% over the past 7 days) and we have the largest number of cases of variants of any state in the country.  But we are open for business especially for spring breakers who can take Covid home as a souvenir. 😟

 

You need to remember that the virus is transmitted as an aerosol and while cleaning is important, it is spread through the air.

The Florida Dept of Health site (https://floridahealthcovid19.gov/) shows the death rate plummeting.

 

There are pockets where positive virus cases (cases, not deaths) have risen slightly (DeSoto & Hillsboro), but even Dade county is showing a drop.  Hospitalization rate for positive cases is hovering around 4%, while death rates are at 2%.

I'm in Broward County.  The numbers have started increasing after being steady in the past few weeks.  I have no doubt that spring break and the lack of any enforced restrictions has played a role in that and increases in cases are to be expected.  I do hope that the lagging death numbers will not increase as much given that many of the elderly have been vaccinated by now.

• 7-day rolling average of daily new reported cases per 100,000 residents:  .23; up 8%; number 12 in the country
• 7-day rolling average of daily new reported deaths per 100,000 residents: .32; down 9%; number 12 in the country
• positive tests: 8%
• hospitalizations unchanged in the past week

More worrisome is that the number of variants discovered in limited testing conducted is increasing, especially in South Florida.  The state is number 1 (not a good thing in this case) in variants.  According to https://www.local10.com/news/florida/2021/03/24/florida-adds-uk-brazil-and-south-america-covid-19-variant-cases/

The latest totals show 1,042 U.K. (B.1.1.7) cases confirmed in Florida, 23 Brazilian (P.1) variant cases and 10 South African (B.1.351).

Infectious disease experts say the totals represent a relatively small percentage of the actual number of variant cases out there, as not all COVID-19 samples are sequenced to detect variants.

The Orlando Sentinel sued the health department last week for county-by-county information, and it showed that as of March 17, Broward had the most confirmed variant cases (307), followed by Miami-Dade (129) and Palm Beach County (75).

The Florida Health Department has withheld these numbers (the media has had to file court cases to get them released) in addition to using a questionable method of determining positivity that under reports positive cases.

 

I do not think it is time to declare victory unfortunately.

I think the governor is probably less beloved by the family members of people who died

needlessly, due the opening everything prematurely, overriding any local regulations, and not allowing fines for

not wearing masks.

 

You know, like the 159 people who died yesterday from covid.

• transmission level in those counties over the last seven days puts it in the red zone.
• the increases in those counties appear to be driven by rising cases in people ages 15 to 34.
• Florida state-wide saw an increase in the daily case average over the past week.
• COVID testing has dropped significantly throughout Florida, from an average of 32,500 tests a day in February to 25,500 in March.

Good News:

• new cases in people older than 65 declined 7%.
• as of today almost three-quarters of Floridians 65 and older have received at least one dose of a COVID vaccine and about half are fully vaccinated.
