Per the CDC

"Each year, on average in the United States, norovirus causes: 900 deaths, mostly among adults aged 65 and older."

Did it happen to mention how many from cruise ships estimated (not sure that data is even available)?

From the CDC (https://www.cdc.gov/nceh/vsp/pub/norovirus/norovirus.htm.  I couldn't find the number of deaths.

From 2008 to 2014, 74 million passengers sailed on cruise ships in the Vessel Sanitation Program’s jurisdiction. Only 129,678 passengers met the program’s case definition for acute gastrointestinal illness and only a small proportion of those cases (1 in 10) were part of a norovirus outbreak.

While it is still early in the process, since even the first individuals in the Clinical trials were vaccinated less than a year ago, the expectations are more in line with a year timeframe, not 3-4 months.

Provided that the virus doesn't mutate to the point that the antibodies developed by the vaccine is not as effective.  There are already variants that show very little response to the vaccines.  The more it mutates the greater the risk that such variants will result.

The same thing they have done for years when there has been an outbreak of norovirus onboard.  Quarantine in cabin.

I don't think it's that simple due to severity of the disease and the ease with which it is spread.  I also don't think that the cruise lines would take that risk since another outbreak would be the end of things for them.  The cruiselines have to have an agreement with ports that would accept any passengers that get sick during the cruise, and that might be hard to arrange if no one is wearing a mask.  At least until we get to the point where everyone is vaccinated and the virus is no longer spreadking.

Wear a damn mask.  Yes, even after you've been vaccinated.  It's been proven to be highly successful in preventing the spread of a the virus.  I hate wearing them, too, but I like NOT getting sick from this insidious virus.

Yes, a year into the 15-day lockdown.

Inaccurate information regarding masks. Social distancing has been proven successful in stemming the spread of not only Covid, but other viruses as well.  Keeping your distance from sick people works. The masks show a 2-4% effectiveness rate, depending upon the source.

The probability of catching COVID is low.  The probability of death or serious effects -- excepting those over 70 and/or having a co-morbidity, especially morbid obesity -- approaches zero.  Your risk of a fatal car accident is far higher.  Stay home if you're worried!  With the noted exceptions above, according to CDC statistics, you are far more likely to be hit by lightning than to catch COVID on a coast-to-coast flight; you know, where you're stuck inside a metal tube breathing recirculated air while the guy next to you hacks up a lung.

Several of us tuned into the Live videos posted by passengers on the Diamond We asked questions of them & followed their 2 weeks on the Dia in Yokohama. And then Dave & Sally while in hospital  in Japan.

wear a mask, get vaccinated, follow health requirement & don’t be in such a rush to get on a ship.

An evidence review of face masks against COVID-19

It found that face masks were 79% effective in preventing transmission, if they were used by all household members prior to symptoms occurring.

The remaining study found the use of masks was strongly protective, with a risk reduction of 70% for those that always wore a mask when going out

The study looked at Australian households, was not done during a pandemic, and was done without any enforcement of compliance. It found that “in an adjusted analysis of compliant subjects, masks as a group had protective efficacy in excess of 80% against clinical influenza-like illness.” However, the authors noted that they “found compliance to be low, but compliance is affected by perception of risk. In a pandemic, we would expect compliance to improve.” In compliant users, masks were highly effective at reducing transmission.

A Cochrane review (15) on physical interventions to interrupt or reduce the spread of respiratory viruses included 67 RCTs and observational studies. It found that “overall masks were the best performing intervention across populations, settings and threats.”

Yes, have to wear it everywhere in public on land in many places.  So why not.

Here in Florida our beloved Governor has opened everything and there is no mask mandate... guess what - we're all thriving and life is normal *sweet-relief* Perhaps folks should remember this virus can be killed with soap and water, hand sanitizer, or lysol.

Where in Florida?

Like much of the country the number of cases in Florida has started to rise again (up 6% over the past 7 days) and we have the largest number of cases of variants of any state in the country.  But we are open for business especially for spring breakers who can take Covid home as a souvenir. 😟

You need to remember that the virus is transmitted as an aerosol and while cleaning is important, it is spread through the air.

Our Governor hasn't got a clue. All of the people that are thriving in Florida this past year are following CDC guidelines, despite his failure to lead.

the governor of Florida, just today, in a conference from Port Canaveral , stated that the condition for sailing are so onerous ( (of a task, duty, or responsibility) involving an amount of effort and difficulty that is oppressively burdensome.) that it is still in effect a NO SAIL ORDER

The Florida Dept of Health site (https://floridahealthcovid19.gov/) shows the death rate plummeting.

There are pockets where positive virus cases (cases, not deaths) have risen slightly (DeSoto & Hillsboro), but even Dade county is showing a drop.  Hospitalization rate for positive cases is hovering around 4%, while death rates are at 2%.

Capprecio, where are you that cases are climbing significantly?

I'm in Broward County.  The numbers have started increasing after being steady in the past few weeks.  I have no doubt that spring break and the lack of any enforced restrictions has played a role in that and increases in cases are to be expected.  I do hope that the lagging death numbers will not increase as much given that many of the elderly have been vaccinated by now.

Daily statistics for Broward, Miami-Dade and Palm Beach Counties are available in the Sun-Sentinel (https://www.sun-sentinel.com/coronavirus/fl-ne-florida-coronavirus-friday-march-26-20210326-4jiewncp3fbgbdr4inxenu2lfm-story.html#nt=pf-double chain~coronavirus-top-chain~feed-driven flex feature~automated~coronavirus-feed-local~4JIEWNCP3FBGBDR4INXENU2LFM~1~8~2~4~art yes)

For the state as a whole, daily statistics from Johns Hopkins University are available in the Washington Post (https://www.washingtonpost.com/graphics/2020/national/coronavirus-us-cases-deaths/).

As of this afternoon:

  • 7-day rolling average of daily new reported cases per 100,000 residents:  .23; up 8%; number 12 in the country
  • 7-day rolling average of daily new reported deaths per 100,000 residents: .32; down 9%; number 12 in the country
  • positive tests: 8%
  • hospitalizations unchanged in the past week

More worrisome is that the number of variants discovered in limited testing conducted is increasing, especially in South Florida.  The state is number 1 (not a good thing in this case) in variants.  According to https://www.local10.com/news/florida/2021/03/24/florida-adds-uk-brazil-and-south-america-covid-19-variant-cases/

The latest totals show 1,042 U.K. (B.1.1.7) cases confirmed in Florida, 23 Brazilian (P.1) variant cases and 10 South African (B.1.351).

Infectious disease experts say the totals represent a relatively small percentage of the actual number of variant cases out there, as not all COVID-19 samples are sequenced to detect variants.

The Orlando Sentinel sued the health department last week for county-by-county information, and it showed that as of March 17, Broward had the most confirmed variant cases (307), followed by Miami-Dade (129) and Palm Beach County (75).

The Florida Health Department has withheld these numbers (the media has had to file court cases to get them released) in addition to using a questionable method of determining positivity that under reports positive cases.

I do not think it is time to declare victory unfortunately.

I think the governor is probably less beloved by the family members of people who died

needlessly, due the opening everything prematurely, overriding any local regulations, and not allowing fines for

not wearing masks.

You know, like the 159 people who died yesterday from covid.

I presume that the governor is beloved by those special few people who live in

communities who were able to jump the vaccine line when the governor

created private vacination sites ... based on campaign contributions.

On the other hand, if you had to wait longer because others were able to

jump the line ahead of you ... not so beloved.

As of today the only bright spots concern the vaccines: the number of cases in vaccinated age cohorts is decreasing and that the 65 years old and older cohort are getting vaccinated.

Some good news, more bad news out of Florida and especially south Florida this evening.

(https://www.sun-sentinel.com/coronavirus/fl-ne-new-infections-on-rise-but-vaccines-having-effect-20210327-x7me2yvitzfbtnw3lman53v7fa-story.html?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=Breaking News Alerts&utm_content=1491616888828#nws=true😞

Bad News:

  • South Florida (Miami-Dade, Broward [Fort Lauderdale] and Palm Beach counties) had a 5.7% increase in new cases compared with the seven-day period a week earlier. Miami-Dade and Broward lead the state in new cases.
  • South Florida is in the top 10% of metropolitan areas in the country for the number of new infections per 100,000 people, ranking 28th out of 392.
  • transmission level in those counties over the last seven days puts it in the red zone.
  • the increases in those counties appear to be driven by rising cases in people ages 15 to 34.
  • Florida state-wide saw an increase in the daily case average over the past week.
  • COVID testing has dropped significantly throughout Florida, from an average of 32,500 tests a day in February to 25,500 in March.

Good News:

  • new cases in people older than 65 declined 7%.
  • as of today almost three-quarters of Floridians 65 and older have received at least one dose of a COVID vaccine and about half are fully vaccinated.
