HIPAA could apply to cruise companies  (Carnival, etc. employs people in the states) IF they have a self-insured health plan or if they act as an intermediary b/t the employee and the health provider, etc.  Also, you're comparing apples and oranges in terms of required vaccines for other countries. When entering another country, one must abide by its health rules, etc. That has no bearing on whether our states, etc. will allow companies that operate within its borders to mandate vaccine certs.

So what happens if  other countries where the ship is going to port requires passengers to have the Covid vaccine?

Great question. Thought of that myself. Don't have a clue how that will be handled. Different countries have different Covid requirements right now (negative PCR test within 72 of entering country with or without vaccine, etc.) it would be hard to "navigate." Will have to wait and see.

Wondering this could be a HIPPA violation to ask for "medical " information

they do not ask if you had any other immunization or other illness

That is a total misunderstanding of HIPAA. It is a violation to release your medical information to anyone without your consent. It is not a violation either to ask for your information or for you to release it.

It will definitely be interesting to see how of this all shakes out.

If a country requires a vaccination, the cruise line will have to require all passengers to be vaccinated or not sail to that port.  When a country has a restriction of that type, a ship cannot anchor, dock or disembark any passengers.

Agreed. And how is asking about a vaccination any different that the previous health questionnaire where they wanted to know if someone was pregnant or if you had been ill within the previous 72 hours prior to sailing.

Is it okay for them to just ask if I'm vaccinated, and accept my answer?

Sure. They may also require proof like schools and others places do, ie a yellow card, white card, or printout of your vaccine record.

That's what the CDC wants us to believe and stay fearful, but still get the shot

Well, after todays news that the CDC was misleading the public about outdoor exposure, it’s just a matter of time before this citizens of this country ends this mess whether the CDC likes it or not.

You can always be tested before you board.  It takes minutes to get results.  I’m not vaccinated nor will I and my husband be vaccinated.  Test us before we get on the ship.  I don’t have a problem with that.

And if the majority of ships in the fleet go the 95% route, you'll be battling for one of those precious unvaccinated 5% slots with all of the under 11 crowd.  Better hope that some of the ships go the test route so that you'll be guaranteed a spot.

Once Caribbean cruising resumes, I wonder what will happen if ports of call in Caribbean nations, who have in place requirements for vaccinations and health visas for travelers, require cruise ships to certify that all passengers meet that country's requirements before docking or disembarking passengers for the day? Carnival might lie about dumping trash and hazardous chemicals in the ocean, but I don't think they would risk being expelled from countries for falsifying entry requirements if there are non-vaxed pax onboard.

This is the $64,000 question as different countries currently have difference requirements (some require vaccination and a negative test within two days of entering, etc.).

I'll cancel our upcoming cruise if covid vaccines will not be required. I just wish they'd tell us already, instead of leaving us in limbo, so we can get on with making our vacation plans.

I'm pretty sure I would not cruise unless guests are required to be vaccinated, which is why I am anxiously awaiting to find out what rules Carnival is going to have in place. I don't mind wearing masks around here, but if the ship is fully vaccinated I'd want them to not require masks. I'm so desperate to cruise though, I think I'd tolerate being masked. Trying to decide if I would be comfortable enough to try to sail in July or wait until November or December.

If I wasnt already booked I wouldnt book at these prices. Out of Galveston prices start over 1900 for 7 days in july, and for my date in sept solo, to book a inside now, deck 1 or 2, 1500.xx

To me that's high lol.

And we still arent sure these are a go.

I agree with the prices being high. I just assumed it was because it was summer! 1st and 2nd guest prices seemed pretty high but the 3rd and 4th guest prices for our kids were pretty good. Either way it's still a lot. I could go on the Mardi Gras (hopefully) out of Port Canaveral the week after Thanksgiving for $1000 cheaper. But if I go on a Christmas cruise it's the same prices as July. So many decisions, lol.

Maybe compare with other lines that arent offering that 600 like rcl. Everyone is up but especially carnival, though celebrity too since they went all inclusive to include tips and drinks and wifi. Carnival was only slightly higher when I booked but now its beyond what I'd pay.

Maybe they are all high. I didnt check ncl, but rcl high. Just no deals this year left. They have all been picked over. High demand.

OMG have you looked at prices for next summer? I thought about pushing it to next year when I have more faith everything will be back to normal. I checked a few 7 day Caribbean cruises that were over $7K for 4 people in a balcony! On Carnival. They have lost their minds. Those are DCL prices. They must be counting on others waiting until next year to cruise and think they will be desperate enough to cruise to pay those prices. Not me. November is looking more and more likely, 3rd and 4th person on the Mardi Gras are $169 + taxes and port fees. We'll all be fully vaccinated by June, and November should be plenty of time for cruise lines to figure out how to handle covid.

I checked on ncl boards and see a thread asking if anyone sees any deals. Lol maybe we should start a thread like that here except I dont think there are any. Maybe its just going to cost more to cruise. Most of mine I'm ok with the prices except a spring break oasis friends group. It's a group rate I can cancel but it's pretty hard to swallow even to meet cc friends.

Maybe cruise prices will stay this high. I may be cruising less at these prices.

There's some pretty good casino offers out there. I know that doesn't do you any good if you don't have them.
